An Invention that has changed the world

A Modern Day Newspaper press.

The ‘’Printing Press’’ was an innovation that debuted the world in the late 15 th century in a quite ironic
method. The first record of the printing press was found in a lawsuit that revealed the pioneer of it all,
Johannes Gutenberg. The Mediterranean wine press inspired the design of the machine having a long
wooden handle that exerted pressure on the paper. The papers were mounted on to a wooden platen
that was able to produce 250 printed papers an hour! Considering that it was the 15 th-16th century, this
was considered quite the revolution. It reduced the intense manual labour that involved having to write
the book by hand! It was a time consuming process with each book taking a minimum of 3-4 years to be
complete resulting to a vast change in the value of a book. Since books were so rare and were
considered to be a treasure for the wealthiest of mankind, education rates were very minimum with
more than half of the population being illiterate! The press was able to save people’s time and it was
able to educate the less fortunate, since books immediately dropped in price. As soon as it made its first
appearance to the world, it was admired by all for its top-notch speed and precision. Nowadays, it
continues to play a huge factor in modern society however, it has faced many renovations, even making
a printer so small that you can fit one in your home or a printer so big and so fast that it is able to print
15000 papers an hour ! However, to what extent will we continue to need printing presses when the
new idea of e-books has just been introduced…
