Title: understanding the critic social values from the viewers perspective towards

malaysian painting artworks

INTRODUCTION

Social criticism analyzes social structures which are seen as flawed and aims at

practical solutions by specific measures, radical reformer even revolutionary change.

The starting points of social criticism can be very different and certain political

theories have never had a monopoly on it. The starting point can be the experience

of a minority within society generally or even the experience of a group of


people within a progressive social movement which does not live up to its

progressive agenda in every respect.

Women in the New Left were often dissatisfied with the sexist attitudes of their male

counterparts and many of them engaged in second wave feminism, while women in

the Chicano movement were enraged by similar attitudes and created Chicana

feminism. Within postmodernism a grand unifying theory no longer seems possible.

This does not exclude the possibility nor the necessity of dialogue. Nevertheless

most social critics still consider the critique of capitalism to be central. The dispute

between critical rationalism and the Frankfurt School exemplified the principal

problem whether the research in the social sciences should pretend to be "neutral"

or "objective" or consciously adopt a necessarily partisan view.

Works of social criticism can belong to social philosophy, political

economy, sociology, social psychology, psychoanalysis but alsocultural studies and

other disciplines or reject academic forms of discourse.

STATEMENTS OF PROBLEM

The problem of the study is to show an understanding of the critic social values by

the viewers perception in painting artwork.

The major problem with an understanding of the critic social values by the

viewers is mostly of the viewers do not understand about the values of the critic
social artworks.There are always think about a negative statement and perception

when looking and think about the critician artwork.

Moreover,the problem is some of critician artwork show a direct visual that make

a viewers think negative about that.The artist don’t know how to use a visual

correctly without show it in a directly.

Another problem is some of viewers doesn’t know about the meaning of

metaphor or symbolism and always thinking that all critician artwork give a negative

statement perception to audience.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The researcher believes that this research is very important because this is about

to show the values and the meaning or critician artowork that have in the painting

artwork to audience.
Many audience always give a negative perception when thinking about the

critician artwork and some organizer of art exhibition dislike and rejecting the critician

artwork from take a part of that exhibiton.This situation is not to be happened

because art is everything conclude critician.

The researcher also believes that some of critician artwork have a values that to

show for audience to understanding when look at the artwork.

As a conclusion, an artist must have a strong and good

reason,research,statement and visualize to make the viewers or the audience

understanding about the critician artwork values and style.

LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

There are some difficulties to get the respondent that don’t know about the critic

social in painting artwork.Not many artist doing the same issue or idea and the
audience do not understanding what the artist do when making an artwork.There are

some artist doing the critician issue but most of them cant explain about the visual or

the meaning about the image properly and clearly.

The audience also cant expect about the critician artwork.Some audience

understanding about that,but not at all.Example when the artist want to critic about

the government issue,some audience think negative about that without

understanding or ask about the meaning of the artwork.Besides that,the artist feel

afraid to make the idea because they think that this is a sensitive idea because

related with someone else.

As a conclusion,as an artist,it is not a big problem to make an critician artwork

because art also conclude about the critician.Without a critician,there are no

meaning,values or problem have to solve when make an artwork.Its not a direct

visual to critic,there are some more style,visual and image to do without doing

something that cant expect some individu think that is negative.Example a

charicature style,pop surrealism or surrealism like the artist such as Jose

Clemente,Leon Golub from international artist and some Malaysian artist like Ahmad

Zaaki Anwar,Samsudin Wahab,Harun Mokhtar,Ahmad Fuad Osman and more.

DELIMITATIONS OF STUDY

The research is confined to the study on the how the audience think and give a

perception when look at the critician painting artwork.Almost people didn’t know
about art,but when the audience look at the image might be they know what image

are there.Beside that’s the problem that the researcher have to face is audience

perception about the painting and sometime the perception is out of range.

Another problem is the audience don’t want to look at the negative message

because as usuall we know that not at all people like to judge about a political

issue,economy or government because they feel afraid about the Malaysian rules

and regulations.As a Malaysian citizen we are free to give some critician,comments

but we have a limitation when want to do something conclude to judge about a critic

social.This is the problem that the researcher have to face.

Next problem is the artist must do a research when make the idea or issue that

related about the critician artwork.A very strong statement needed when make like

this artwork because they must face the audience with a different perception and

looks.

As a conclusion,the audience has to understand the issue.The painting that with

a title can make the audience more to understanding.Besides that,some image or

visual have their own meaning to be understanding example like a colour.Each

colour have their own meaning that to know and understanding.

HYPOTHESIS

There are a few hypotheses can be drawn from this research:


First is there are a few artist doing the painting with a directly style on their

visual or image. Therefore, the audience directly understanding about the meaning

or message what the artist want to show.

Second is due to the audience itself. They are some artist doing an visual

image without showing it as a directly.So.to make the audience understand,they use

an image that have the own meaning.Example a cow image with wearing a blaizer,it

means stupid person,and some artist use a font to make the people thinking after

understanding about their artwork.

Next hypotheses is the artist need more to read and get a knowledge about

an environment issue,economy or political,It is important when to make an artwork

like the critician issue.Without doing a research like reading newspapers and

books,or use a media like internet,the researcher will face a big problem because the

audience maybe mad and protest.

Other guess is the audience are not really care or think about the important

of the issue and why the artist want to show off about the issue.Therefore,as an

artist,they have to explain why the issue must be created with make it as a critician

artwork.

LITERATURE REVIEW
In doing the research, the writer had refer a few books Our show spans 150

years of social criticism through art. Lithographs by the pre-eminent critic of the 19th

century in France, HONORE DAUMIER, were avidly followed in political journals Le

Charvari and La Caricature, where a ‘rogues gallery’ of Les Honneurs du

Pantheon is depicted.From Austria, MAX POLLAK’s etching, Judengasse (Jewish

Alley) depicts narrow cobblestone streets in Vienna’s Jewish sector.

WERNER DREWES, who was born in Germany but moved to the United States in

the early 1930s, tackles the chilling rise of Nazism in Germany in his 1934 series of

woodcuts, It Can’t Happen Here. The warning of the political situation is even

more overt in his 1937 woodcut Hitler as Scarecrow. Across the Atlantic, ANGEL

BRACHO celebrates Victoria! over Hitler’s fascism in his woodcut poster of 1945.

Portaiture is an effective ‘language’ for political issues. JOHN LANGLEY

HOWARD’s Working Woman represents the Depression-era with a bust of a tired,

resigned older matron. A generation later, JOHN BERNHARDT and JAMES GILL

both presented portraits of Demagogues, Gill adapting a video image of Senator

Joseph McCarthy and Bernhardt depicting his preacher-father.Political themes have

always been prevalent Latin American art. We present several works by Latin

artists, particularly those who were active with the Taller de Grafica Popular in

Mexico City. RAUL ANGIUANO’s monumental depiction of a Lacandones Indian in

a raped landscape speaks of the massive deforestation of Central Mexico in the

1950s and 1960s. JOSE CLEMENTE OROZCO celebrates the men who fought

alongside Emilio Zapata during the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century.

METHODOLOGY
This chapter will be focus on how the research be made using a few type of

method such as primary method and secondary method.Using this method,the data

that needed can be collecting.This chapter also shows sampling of the questionnaire

that using to get the society opinion about the topic.Besides that,this chapter will

show that what kind of the research instrument and procedure using to get a

complete data that needed by the topic of An Understanding Of The Critic Social

Values By The Viewers Perception In Malaysian Painting Artwork.

There are two ways of information gathered that are the primary and secondary

data.Primary data is a data of study has been obtained from a survey conducted on

One to one of the interview was the approach that respondent used.The

researcher distribute questionnaire to respondent to answer that.This is actually a

kind of a structured interview.

Moreover,for a secondary data,a several types of books and internet were been

used to gathered data.

Primary Data
The research is on the local An Understanding Of The Critic Social Values By

The Viewers Perception In Malaysian Painting Artwork.This is descriptive survey

research.To do this,the researcher used the primary data as an approach.The data

are collected from the respondents such as of students and lecturers in University Of

Mara Technology including with a different department in this university.The general

age is about 18 to 45 years old with both genders.The researchers do the survey on

morning and evening.

There were a few students from different department as a respondent.The

instrument used for the research is questionnaire.The respondents need to fulfill the

questionnaire.

There are three parts of questions which are Section A,Section B and Section C.

Section A will contain the general information about each sample or respondents.

The information required are gender,age and others.Section B question is based on

the statement of the problem and Section C consist based on the respondent

opinion.

Secondary Data

The secondary data approach used in this research is collecting all the data and

material from the source of books in library of Tun Abdul Razak in University Of Mara

Technology.Some books are found here and the researcher borrows some books for

data collecting about the history,image,style,technique,content,form and others.

Conclusions
Based on the researches that have been conducted,it’s shown that the awareness

among the audience and viewers perception in Malaysian about the critician painting

artwork is not at the satisfied level.This is because the Malaysian are not exposed

widely to the Malaysian art scene especially about the critician artwork style.The

Malaysian artist is still trapped in a small scope and limited.

In term term to increasing the local scene painting level,the artist have to brave in

using a style and content in their artwork.Using with a strong content and a good

visualize will increasing the level of values in a critician painting artwork.

The third conclusion is a society in Malaysian still cant open their mind and

interpretation what had happened with environment today conclude about the

political,economy,society and more.
