Parents attended a talk by a school counselor on the issue of distractions in

school. One of the distractions mentioned was the use of mobile phones. As
such, the Ministry of Education does not allow students to bring mobile phones
to school.

Write an essay expressing your opinion on this matter of not allowing students
to bring mobile phones to school. Write at least 250 words.

In this technological advanced generation, students are assisted by technology in their

studies. Whereas, students prior to this generation were primarily depending on physical
books and guidance from their teachers. As of now, the Ministry of Education does not
allow students to bring mobile phones to school mainly because they are concerned that
mobile phone can cause distraction to students while the lesson is being conducted by
teachers. Still, despite what the Ministry of Education suggests I believe that the benefit of
bringing mobile phones to school outweighs the cons of doing so.

I believe that bringing mobile phones to school is able to benefit the students because
students are able to utilize the internet to help them in their studies. The reason behind
that is that the internet contains many accurate information which are accessible to the
public. Students are able to easily find study materials or informations with the help of
handy search engines like Google and Yahoo. When students use the internet to find
information, the student is able to find the desired information in a short period of time and
thus saves their time instead of finding the information they need in physical books. By
bringing their mobile phones to school, students can work on their group projects or group
studies together in school with their classmates rather than doing it virtually together at
home via an online chatting platform. Moreover, one other benefit of using the internet to
find informations is that it saves money. The internet contains a lot of free and accurate
information created by the public, as an example Wikipedia is a free online public
encyclopedia that contains reasonably accurate information and online forums such as
“Quora” help students to get answers to frequently asked questions. In summary, students
are able to save time and money when searching for informations for their studies if they
are able to utilize the internet by means of their mobile phones.

Besides that, I also think that students can make use of their mobile phones for safety
purposes. In this era, the safety of students are debatable especially in metropolitan areas
where many kidnapper preys on teenagers and young adults, thus students need a way to
increase their safety with they are beyond the safety of the school compound. By bringing
a mobile phone to school, the student can constantly be in contact with their parents when
they are travelling alone to and back from school. Students can make a telephone call or
message to their parents to notify them his location during the journey to school from time
to time so the parents can always have an idea where their child is. Besides that, an
emergency application in the mobile phone that can contact the local authorities whenever
the student feel that he is in danger can help to prevent any disaster from happening.
Moreover, parents can install a tracking application that is able to track the location of
their child constantly. In this way, in case the student have gone missing, his parents can
have ample of evidence that may help to locate the student. During the COVID-19
pandemic, citizens of Malaysia have experienced how the “MySejahtera” tracking
application can help to keep people away from harm’s way. In the same way students can
stay safe by constantly using the “MySejahtera” application whenever they outside of their
house or school. In short, bringing a mobile phone can greatly increase the safety of a
student by means of tracking and emergency applications, additionally parents can
always keep an eye on their children’s safety.

Last but not least, I also agree with the point that students are easily distracted from
their lesson by mobile phones. Mobile phones are not only used by students to find study
materials but also to play video games and to browse the social media, both of which can
be a distraction to the on-going lesson. This can be a tough situation to be in if the student
is addicted to playing games and browsing social media as it would be difficult to resist
the temptation to play games during the lesson. As a result, the student’s studies would
be affected because he was not paying attention during the lesson. Other than that, the
notification sound coming from the mobile phone can also be a great deal of distraction as
it would be hard to ignore the temptation to occasionally check on the phone for chat
messages or game notifications. If the student is always distracted by the notifications, he
cannot pay attention to the teacher and would lead to bad examination grades. To solve
this problem, I suggest that schools would ask the students to keep their mobile phones in
the locker during lesson and only when teachers allow the student to use their phones for
study purposes then students are allowed to use their phones in the class.

In conclusion, I believe that the benefit of bringing mobile phones to school outweighs
the disadvantages of not doing so. Therefore, I disagree with the decision of the Ministry
of Education that disallow students from bringing their mobile phones to school. Some of
the reasons are, students can save time and money when searching for study materials
and increase the students safety by means of tracking applications. However, one of the
cons of bringing a mobile phone to school is that mobile phones can be of great
distraction to the on-going lesson and would affect the student’s studies. So, it is hoped
that the Ministry of Education could make a rational comparison of the pros and cons of
allowing students to bring their cell phones to school for the better of student in their
studies and life.
