Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to Environmental Science Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module
on Introduction to Environmental Science
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the module:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Environmental Science. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence
of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with
the textbook you are now using.
3
After going through this module, you are expected to:
a. Define environmental science
b. Identify the goals of environmental science
c. Cite the scope of environmental science
d. Give the importance of environmental science

Introduction to Environmental Science
1
The environmental conditions of earth, including the climate, are determined by
physical, chemical, biological, and human interactions that transform and transport
materials and energy. This is the ”earth system” that humans rely upon for survival and
life. Understanding how the earth system works involving human activities and its impact
on the environment is indeed very essential.
What’s In
Some of the pictures below portray certain actions that are good for the
environment while some ultimately harm the environment. Honestly, have you done
some of these actions? Can you identify the actions worth doing and the actions worth
avoiding?
Write whether the deed portrayed in each item benefits or harms our environment.
Write your answers in an answer sheet.

What is It
The word environment comes from the French word “environ” which means
surrounding or enveloping. Environment is the surroundings or conditions in which a
person, animal or plant lives or operates. It is greatly affected by human activities.
The Earth behaves as a system in which oceans, atmosphere, land, the living and
non-living parts therein, are all connected. ( Steffen et al, 2004). All organisms are linked
to one another in an ecosystem by the flow of energy and the cycling of materials.
Humans are an integral part of the natural system and human activities can alter the
stability of ecosystems.
Environmental science is the study of the interactions between the physical,
chemical, and biological components of nature. It encompasses geography, zoology,
physics, ecology, oceanology, and geology.
7
⚫ Prevention and control of pollution.
Pollution prevention are the practices that reduce or eliminate the creation
of pollutants and its release in the environment
Environmental science plays a key role in solving complex environmental issues of
varying scale, including climate change, ozone layer depletion, energy crisis,
desertification, urbanization explosion and so on.
Studying environmental science is deemed necessary because it allows us to reflect
how our actions as humans affect our environment. Knowledge in environmental science
influences our everyday decisions in dealing with Mother Nature.

Activity No. 3 : Pictures to Ponder
Please examine the pictures provided below. Compare the pictures on the left with the
pictures on the right. We all want to have an environment like the pictures on the right side
right? Unfortunately, we have seen our beautiful surroundings being destroyed and polluted
by certain human activities. Is there a chance to turn them back into what they used to be?
Kindly write on the given space the scope of Environmental science that can be applied in
order to resolve environmental problems portrayed on the left.
10
Activity No. 4: What are your Thoughts?
Write down your reasons why it is important to study environmental science.
Make your statements short and simple.

What I Can Do
Using cut outs from old magazines and newspapers, make a collage
portraying the importance of environmental science. You can draw pictures if
cutouts are not available
