What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Environmental Science. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence
of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with
the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1 – Definition of Environmental Science
• Lesson 2 – Goals of Environmental Science
• Lesson 3 – Scope and Importance of Environmental Science

3
After going through this module, you are expected to:
a. Define environmental science
b. Identify the goals of environmental science
c. Cite the scope of environmental science
d. Give the importance of environmental science

What I Know

Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate sheet of
paper.

1. Environmental science deals with

a. Arts and music

Lesson
Introduction to Environmental Science
1
The environmental conditions of earth, including the climate, are determined by
physical, chemical, biological, and human interactions that transform and transport
materials and energy. This is the ”earth system” that humans rely upon for survival and
life. Understanding how the earth system works involving human activities and its impact
on the environment is indeed very essential.

What’s In

Some of the pictures below portray certain actions that are good for the
environment while some ultimately harm the environment. Honestly, have you done
some of these actions? Can you identify the actions worth doing and the actions worth
avoiding?
Write whether the deed portrayed in each item benefits or harms our environment.
Write your answers in an answer sheet.

What is It

The word environment comes from the French word “environ” which means
surrounding or enveloping. Environment is the surroundings or conditions in which a
person, animal or plant lives or operates. It is greatly affected by human activities.
The Earth behaves as a system in which oceans, atmosphere, land, the living and
non-living parts therein, are all connected. ( Steffen et al, 2004). All organisms are linked
to one another in an ecosystem by the flow of energy and the cycling of materials.
Humans are an integral part of the natural system and human activities can alter the
stability of ecosystems.
Environmental science is the study of the interactions between the physical,
chemical, and biological components of nature. It encompasses geography, zoology,
physics, ecology, oceanology, and geology.

The primary goal of studying environmental

science is to protect and preserve the
environment we are living in and in doing so, it is
necessary that we learn

• how the natural world works,

• to understand how we as humans interact with
the environment,
• to determine how we affect the environment.

Environmental Science has a vast scope

since it covers a wide range of subject matter or
issues related to our complex life - supporting system. The scope of the subject can be
described in terms of major areas of applicability as well as career opportunities related
to the subject. The three major areas of applicability of the subject are
⚫ Management of natural resources
Natural resource management deals with managing the way in which people
and natural landscapes interact. It brings together land use planning,
water management, bio-diversity conservation, and the future sustainability of
industries like agriculture, mining, tourism, fisheries and forestry.

⚫ Conservation of ecosystem and biodiversity

Ecosystem conservation considers entire communities of species as well as their
interactions with the physical environment and aims to develop integrated plans
involving wildlife, physical resources, and sustainable use.

7
⚫ Prevention and control of pollution.
Pollution prevention are the practices that reduce or eliminate the creation
of pollutants and its release in the environment
Environmental science plays a key role in solving complex environmental issues of
varying scale, including climate change, ozone layer depletion, energy crisis,
desertification, urbanization explosion and so on.
Studying environmental science is deemed necessary because it allows us to reflect
how our actions as humans affect our environment. Knowledge in environmental science
influences our everyday decisions in dealing with Mother Nature.

Activity No. 2 : Environmental Goals

The primary goal of environmental science is to protect and preserve the
environment we are living in that we may continue to enjoy a comfortable, safe and
abundant life. In order to do that we must learn to :

Activity No. 3 : Pictures to Ponder
Please examine the pictures provided below. Compare the pictures on the left with the
pictures on the right. We all want to have an environment like the pictures on the right side
right? Unfortunately, we have seen our beautiful surroundings being destroyed and polluted
by certain human activities. Is there a chance to turn them back into what they used to be?
Kindly write on the given space the scope of Environmental science that can be applied in
order to resolve environmental problems portrayed on the left.

10
Activity No. 4: What are your Thoughts?
Write down your reasons why it is important to study environmental science.
Make your statements short and simple.
