HOMEWORK 3 (DUE 11/09/2017)

1. A 2-ft diameter column packed with 1-in. ceramic Raschig rings was operated with
air and water and found to flood at an air-flow rate of 356 cfm. Air entered the
column 800F and 1 atm, and the column operated at these same conditions. What
was the flow rate of liquid to the column, in gallons per minute?

2. The desired gas temperature exiting the flame mixing chamber and entering the
reaction chamber of a thermal incinerator is 7500C. The polluted air-flow rate is 500
m3/min at 770C. The fuel gas (methane) is available at 200C and the burner draws in
supplemental air (at 250C) at the rate of 14 kg air/kg fuel gas. Calculate the required
flow rate of methane ignore heat lossed and heat generation from pollutant
combustion. Give you answer in kg/min and in m3/min.

Please note that hT.BA should be around 4.1
BTU/lb and not 7.1 after interpolation.
There is a mistake in this solution. However,
it does not change the final answer by a
huge margin.

3. A 500 MW coal-fired power plant is burning coal with a heating value of 12,000
BTU/lb. The coal contains 2% sulfur and 150 ppb of mercury. The plant has a
thermal efficiency of 38% and uses an air-to-fuel ratio of 14:1 (mass basis).
Calculate (a) the coal firing rate, lb/hr, (b) the fuel gas flow rate, scfm, (c) the SO2
removal efficiency needed to meet a standard of 1.4 lb/MWh gross electrical energy
output, and (d) the overall mercury capture percentage that is required to meet a
mercury standard of 0.015 lb/GWh of gross energy output.

4. If the flue gas going through an SCR is flowing at 1.2 million scfm, and the ammonia
slip is 2 ppm, calculate the mass of ammonia that could potentially be discharged to
the air each day. If the plant also has a wet FGD scrubber, how would that affect the
actual ammonia discharge rate?

5. A power plant burns 5000 tons/day of a coal that has a 85% carbon content. The
air-to-fuel ratio is 16:1 and the target CO2 removal using amine scrubbers is 95%.
The maximum design superficial gas velocity is to be 15 ft/sec at a tower
temperature of 1400F. Calculate the daily CO2 removal rate, and calculate the
diameter of the amine absorption tower if only one tower is desired. Textbook
example 22.5 with different numbers
