The Story of The Supreme: The Srimad Bhagavatam

The Story of The Butter Thief

Veda Vyasa
One fine day, a marriage procession was going on.
The marriage of Devaki, the princess of Mathura, and
Vasudeva. The charioteer was thus Kamsa, the evil
king of Mathura himself. But then, an akashvani
broke out, and said, “Evil Kamsa! The eight son of
your beautiful sister Devaki will cause you
destruction!” Kamsa, being a coward himself, put
Vasudeva and Devaki in karagar (prison).
But in the prison, whenever Devaki gave birth to a
child, Kamsa killed that specific child. He never
spared any of them. But one day, Devaki gave birth
to the supreme lord alone, whom, with one touch,
can destroy the entire universe. She gave birth to the
avatar of Vishnu, the supreme lord alone. One can
attain salvation just by looking at him, is he so
beautiful. At that wonderful day, a great storm
raged up, destroying everything. At that day was
born, Krishna. But at that day, suddenly, all the
guards fell asleep. Kamsa didn’t come. So, Vasudeva
took Krishna to his friend, Nanda, who lived in
Vrindavan. That day, Vasudeva’s wife, Yashoda, had
also just given birth to a beautiful girl. So, Vasudeva
exchanged the girl with the supreme lord, and took
the girl to his karagar. There, when he stepped into
the karagar, the gates closed and the guards woke up.
Then, Kamsa took the baby girl in his hands, and
threw her towards the wall. The girl went dead. But
out of her, emerged, the supreme lady, Devi
Lakshmi, Krishna’s wife alone. She then said, “O
Foolish! You will die at my revered lord’s hands! My
husband is somewhere else! Prepare for death!” And
then, she disappeared.
So, as time went on, Krishna grew up and became a
fine boy. Every person in Vrindavan adored him.
Everybody loved him. In fact, they loved him even
more then their own children! Krishna had also
developed a wonderful taste for butter. He is thus
known as “The Butter Thief”. He often stole butter
and gobbled it all with his friends!

Now, one day, Indra, the kind of demigods, became

jealous of Krishna. To teach him a lesson, Krishna
told the Vrindavan vaasis (residents) to start
worshipping the Govardhan mountain instead of
Indra. Now, Indra became extremely angry at this
and bestowed a terrible storm on the vaasis of
Vrindavan. Then, Krishna lifted the Govardhan
mountain on his small finger! He gave shelter to all
the residents of Vrindavan through this act.

Now, Indra became ashamed and asked Krishna for

forgiveness and he forgave Indra. Krishna also killed
rakshasas like Pootana, Trinavarta, Bakasura, etc.

When Krishna grew up, he left Vrindavan with
Balaram, his brother and avatar of sheshnag. He
told his mother the truth: “Mother, I am not your
son, I am Devaki and Vasudeva’s beloved. Kindly
allow me to leave.” Saying this, he bade goodbye to
Radha, his lover and avatar of Lakshmi.

Now, when Krishna arrived Mathura, he went on a
fight between Kamsa’s guards and himself and
Balaram. Krishna easily killed the guards! And so
did Sheshnag, in the form of Balaram.

Now, Krishna was soon face to face with Kamsa. He

just merely kicked him in the face, and Kamsa went
dead! Such is the might of our supreme!
The lord then freed his parents and made them the
kind and queen of Mathura. Later, he formed a city
named Dwaraka and ruled it with his wives.

He also helped the pandavas win the war against

Kauravas. He also narrated the Bhagavata Gita to
Arjuna, the righteous leader.
