5-Scapular Region

This document provides information on muscles in the scapular region. It describes the origin, insertion, nerve supply and action of muscles like the levator scapulae, rhomboid minor, rhomboid major, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, teres major, subscapularis, deltoid, and serratus anterior. The rotator cuff muscles are also mentioned. Long thoracic nerve injury is noted to sometimes occur during mastectomy procedures.

Embryology department
& French department
B- DEEP LAYER of Back muscles

1.Levator
scapulae,
2.Rhomboidus
minor
3.Rhomboidus
major
Origin:
1- Levator scapulae :
Transverse processes of C1 -
C4 vertebrae.
2- Rhomboidus minor :
Nuchal ligaments and
spinous processes of C7
to T1 vertebrae.
3- Rhomboidus major :
Spinous processes of the T2
to T5 vertebrae.
Insertion:
Medial border of dorsal surface of
scapula.
Nerve supply
Dorsal scapular nerve
(C5).
Action

• Levator scapulae: Elevates scapula.

• Rhomboidus minor,major:Retracts
the scapula and rotates the scapula
so that the glenoid cavity faces
downwards.

• Humerus: greater tuberosity –superior -middle facet
Nerve supply
Suprascapular nerve
Action
Abduction of arm Lateral rotation
from 0˚-18˚. of arm.
3-Teres minor 4-Teres major
Insertion
• Humerus: greater tuberosity –inferior facet
• Medial lip of bicipital groove
Nerve supply
Axillary nerve lower subscapular

Origin
• Anterior fibers: from the
anterior border of lateral
1/3 of clavicle.
• Middle fibers: from the
lateral margin of the
acromion.
• Posterior fibers: from the
lower lip of the crest of
the spine of the scapula.
Insertion
Into the V-shaped deltoid tuberosity on the middle of
the lateral aspect of the shaft of the humerus.
Nerve supply
Axillary nerve
Action
Anterior fibers: Middle fibers: Posterior fibers:
flexion and medial abduction from18˚- extension and lateral
rotation of humerus. 90˚. rotation of humerus

Serratus anterior muscle
Origin
upper 8 ribs
Serratus anterior muscle
insertion
• Medial border of the scapula
Serratus anterior muscle
nerve supply
• long thoracic nerve (nerve to serratus anterior).
Serratus anterior muscle
action
1. Protraction of the scapula.
2. Keeping the scapula in contact with the chest
wall.
3. Raising the arm above the head(its lower
fibers & trapezius)
4. Inspiration .
