Respected SEFINDIA FORUM seniors,

I have one doubt on design of footing for side and corner column in residential framed structure.
Is there any standard procedure for this type of footing. In practice most of the Engineers
provide simply a isolated tapered footing without any beam. As per theory, beams are provided
to take care of settlement and torsion due to boundary conditions. Some Engineers suggest to
provide Strap or Trapezoidal footing. I have prepared a typical footing with beam for such

Er.Rajan,
There are many good textbooks on R.C.C which explain in detail the design of independent
footings. The beams you mention is the Plinth/Grade beams usually connected with all column
for many reasons including the ones you pointed out. there is no compulsion as per design to
provide beams between them but depending on the soil condition.site condition and the forces
on tthe footing the design will be carried out with different type.

Hope you can refer some good books for design.

Thank you very much for the reply posted by Thiru T.Rangarajan Sir & Thiru B.V.Harsoda Sir. I
have gone through prevous postings in SEFINDIA Forum and know better than my previos under
standing of Footing design for Side and corner column for boundary existing with adjacent
property. Comments if any in my design calculation are welcomed.
Thank you,

Mr. V.M.Rajan,First is the footing beam provided in two cases, to control C.G. of footing where
the footing is did not can achieved it's full dimensional area and second cases is to control the

Your design is O.K. there is no doubt. But your footing beam design required to
revised, because it is a continuous beam not cantilevered. Therefore u can calculate B.M. by
using (wl*l/10).

But u have to decide most economical section.
