What I Need to Know
At the end of this module, the learners will be able to:
1. recall the whether the functions are linear or not,
2. evaluate the linear function,
3. solve problems involving linear functions (M8AL-IIe-2).

What I Know

A. Determine whether each function is a linear function or not . Write LF if the function is a linear
function and write NF if not.

1. f(x) = 30

2. f(x) = 4x

3. f(x) = - x 4 +6x

B. Solve for the value of the function using the given value of x. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.

1. f(x) = -5x , when x is 0.

2. f(x) = 3x + 7 , when x is 2.
3. f(x) = x – 6 , when x is -6.

C. Solve the given problem.

Three pounds of squid can be purchased at the market for 100 pesos per day plus 18. Determine
the equation and represent the function that defines the cost of squid based on weight.

What’s In

A linear function in one variable is one that can be written in form of f(x) = mx + b , where
m and b are real numbers. Its graph is a line with a slope m and y-intercept b. If m ≠ 0 , then
the degree of the functions is 1. If m = 0 and b ≠ 0, then the degree of the functions is 0. If m = 0
and b = 0, then the degree of the function is not defined.
There are many real-life situations that can be solved through linear function because the
relationship involves more than two variables. It is a function if one of them is related to one of
the other variables but there are cases wherein the dependent or independent variable is already
given and so you are not required to show functional relationship.

Real-life Problems Involving Linear Functions

To solve a linear function, you would be given the value of f(x) and be asked to
find x. Let's go through the steps with the help of an example:

• f(x)=3x-1, solve for f(x)=8

Step 1. Substitute the value of f(x) into the problem.

• 8=3x-1

Step 2. Isolate the variable. Add 1 to both sides to isolate the variable term by using
the opposite operation to move the constant term across the equal sign.

• 8 +1 = 3x - 1 +1;
9 = 3x

Step 3. Divide both sides to isolate the variable itself

• 9/3 = 3x/3

Step 4. Simplify.
• x=3

Example 1

Demi often rides a taxi from one place to another. The standard fare in riding a
taxi is Php 40 as a flag-down rate plus Php 4 for every 200 meters or a fraction of
it.
Complete the table below:
Distance 0 200 400 600 800 1000
(in meters)
x

Amount
(in Php)
y

Solutions:
Let x be the distance in meters.
Let y be the amount in Php.

Given:

Php 40/0 is the rate of taxi

+ Php 4 in every 200 meters

y = 40 + x(4/200m)

Distance
(in meters) 0 200 400 600 800 1000
x

Amount y = 40 + y = 40 + y = 40 + y = 40 + y = 40 + y = 40 +
(in Php) x(4/200m) x(4/200m) x(4/200m)y x(4/200m)y x(4/200 x(4/200
= 40 + = 40 +
y y = 40 + y = 40 + m) m)

m) m) 800m(4/ 1000m(4
y = 40 + 0 m)
y = 40 + 8y y = 40 + 200m) /200m)
y = 40 y = 40 + 4 = 48 12y = 52 y = 40 + y = 40 +
y = 44
16 20
y = 56 y = 60

What’s More

Direction: Solve the given problem.

It has been observed that a particular plant's growth is directly proportional to time. It
measured 2 cm when it arrived at the nursery and 2.5 cm exactly one week later. If the plant
continues to grow at this rate, determine the function that represents the plant's growth.
What I have Learned

a. Fill in the blanks.

A ________1_______ in one variable is one that can be written in form of ______2______,
where m and b are real numbers. Its graph is a line with _____3_____ m and ________4______ b. If
m ≠ 0, then the degree of the functions is _______5_____. If m = 0 and b ≠ 0, then the degree of
the functions is 0. If m = 0 and b = 0, then the degree of the function is ______6______.

What I Can Do

Directions: Solve the given problem.

A rental company charges a flat fee of Php 1000 and an additional Php 500 per mile to
rent a moving van. Write a linear equation to approximate the cost y (in Php) in terms of x, the
number of miles driven. How much would a 75-mile trip cost?

Assessment

Direction: Solve the given problem:

An athlete begins the normal practice for the next marathon during
the evening. At 6:00 pm, he starts to run and leaves his home. At 7:30 pm, the athlete finishes
the run at home and has run a total of 7.5 miles.

1. How fast was his average speed over the course of the run?
2. How many miles did he run after the first half hour? Using the equation, if x=12, solve for y.
If y=5x, then y=5(0.5)=2.5 miles.
3. If he kept running at the same pace for a total of 3 hours, how many miles will he have run? If
x=3, solve for y. If y=5x, then y=5(3)=15 miles.

Additional Activities

Solve the following problems involving linear functions:

1. When digging into the earth, the temperature rises according to the following linear equation: t = 15 +
0.01 h. t is the increase in temperature in degrees and h is the depth in meters. Calculate:
a. What the temperature will be at 100 m depth?
b. Based on this equation, at what depth would there be a temperature of
100 ºC?

2. The pollution level in the centre of a city at 6 am is 30 parts per million and it grows in linear fashion by
25 parts per million every hour. If y is pollution and t is time elapsed after 6 am, determine:
a. The equation that relates y with t.
b. The pollution level at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. 10 hours have elapsed between 6 in the morning to four
in the afternoon
