How to Change the Decimal Separator Symbol in

Excel

To change Excel options for decimal separators, do the following:

   1.   On the File tab, click the Options button:

  2.   In the Excel Options dialog box, on the Advanced tab, clean the Use system separators checkbox:

Please note that on the User System Separators checkbox is ticked. Under that checkbox there is a
Decimal Separator. In South Africa we use a Comma as a separator. The Thousand Separator checkbox
has been left empty.
   3.   In the appropriate fields, enter symbols you need for Decimal separator and for Thousands
separator.

For example:

Note: Changing dot to comma in the Decimal separator field also requires changes in the Thousands
separator field. You can’t use comma for both fields.

Decimal separator settings are not specific for the current workbook and change number formats in all
workbooks you open.

If you need to change system options, please see Change the semicolon to a comma or vice versa tip,
which explains how to modify list separator in the Customize Format dialog in the system. The same
dialog controls the Decimal symbol and the Digit grouping symbol settings.

Please note you will have to restart your pc for the changes to take effect.

Another trick is to replace the current separator with the one you want. Like below. But this suggested
for the intermediate users, suggested for editing.

1. Click «HOME»-«Find and Select»-«Replace» tool (or press CTRL +

H).

In the window that appears, enter a decimal point in «Find what:» field, and a comma in the second
«Replace width:» field. Then click «Replace All».
Regional Settings
Unlike function names—which are determined by the language settings within Excel—your date and
number settings are controlled by the operating system. Let's take a look at how to view and modify
these settings in Windows.

1. Open the Control Panel (usually found in the Start menu).

2. Locate and select Change date, time, or number formats within the Clock, Language, and
Region category.
3. The Region dialog box will appear. Click Additional settings.

4. The Customize Format dialog box will appear. From here, you can view and modify your
preferred settings for decimal symbols, list separators, digit grouping, dates, and more. The
screenshot below shows settings used here in South Africa.
CSV File – Text To Columns
How to format a csv file to align with the set columns in Excel. Once the file is open it will look like the
image below, where the data is not aligned with the set columns.

On the Toolbar click the Data tab (next to Formulas tab)

From there highlight the first column like below. This will show the headers for all the column on the text
bar.

Then click on Text To Columns, the following page will pop up. Click on Delimited which works with
commas or tab separators. Then click on Next.
Select the delimiters that are in your csv document. In this case for default I have selected so that the
data is separated into Tabs. I then selected Comma since the separator in my document is a Comma.
Note that when clicking on the Delimiters the Data Preview at the bottom shows you how that data will
be presented in the spreadsheet. Once you have selected the correct delimiters then click Finish.

Once you have clicked finish, the stat will the be set to its set space. That is where you then extend each
tab so that the data sits well in its set space. You can then edit the spreadsheet as you please.
