ABSTRACT

The immeasurable number of cases of dengue or of any mosquito-related diseases

reported every year have been overwhelming, not only that, potentially dangerous products that
are the so called solutions keep being made. This innovation that the researchers thought of have
the goals of achieving the well- being of everyone under houses occupied with mosquitoes. First,
was to know what time mosquitoes are most active, this became the start of the research
conducted. The researchers took in mind the materials to use and the procedures conducted, that
are effective but not harmful to those who were to use the product and will not cause any danger
other than to the mosquito itself. Data gathered has it said that mosquito are most likely to bite
someone during the night, and so the researchers thought of a way to include that in our
innovative device. The APMC is to deal with the mosquitoes with utmost care to its user, the
Arduinouno program will run and will automatically on and off during the time ideal for when
mosquito is most felt, leaving the user to not having to worry about wasting electricity and time.
INTRODUCTION

Background of the study:

The incidence of dengue has grown dramatically around the world in recent decades. A vast

majority of cases are asymptomatic or mild and self-managed, and hence the actual numbers of dengue

cases are under-reported. Many cases are also misdiagnosed as other febrile illnesses. (WHO, 2018)

One modeling estimate indicates 390 million dengue virus infections per year (95% credible

interval 284–528 million), of which 96 million (67–136 million) manifest clinically (with any severity of

disease). Another study on the prevalence of dengue estimates that 3.9 billion people are at risk of

infection with dengue viruses. Despite a risk of infection existing in 128 countries, 70% of the actual

burden is shouldered by Asia. (WHO, 2018)

The number of dengue cases reported to WHO increased ~6 fold, from <0.5 million in 2010 to

over 3.34 million in 2016. These numbers are from member States in only three WHO regions (SEARO,

WPRO and PAHO), who regularly report their case numbers; there are other countries and regions that do

not provide reports. This alarming increase in case numbers is partly explained by a change in national

practices to record and report dengue to the Ministries of Health, and to the WHO. But it also represents

government recognition of the burden, and therefore the pertinence to report dengue disease burden.

Therefore, although the full global burden of the disease is uncertain, this growth is only bringing us

closer to a more accurate estimate of the full extent of the problem. (WHO, 2018)

The most commonly use repellents are mosquito coils, mosquito (bug) spray, and more. These do

work well however, most of them may be dangerous to some. “…exposure to the smoke of mosquito coils

similar to the tested ones can pose significant acute and chronic health risks,” (Liu et al., 2003). “…

difficulty breathing, coughing, vomiting, stupor and sometimes tremors or seizures can result from
breathing on or consuming bug spray,” (Santos, 2017). The user wouldn’t have to fret with unattended

mosquito repellant or the possibility of having health concerns with the APMC device.

Diseases carried by mosquitoes had brought many harm and it still has to this day. In the year

2019, the Philippines declared a “national dengue alert” in July with at least 622 deaths from the

mosquito-borne disease. Mosquito bites result in the deaths of one million people per year. With the

worrying amount of lives taken by mosquitoes, being in the presence of the said insect caused discomfort

and anxiousness to many. Thus, several repellents and anti-mosquito devices were made. What sets the

APMC device apart from the others is its availability and further advantageous abilities.

More than 146,000 dengue cases were reported in the first seven months of the year, almost twice

as many as in the same period last year, according to the country’s health department.“This is really

staggering,” said Francisco Duque, the health secretary. He said the declaration of an epidemic was

needed so that local governments in badly hit places could use “quick response funds” to fight the

disease.Officials said the Western Visayas region of the Philippines had the most cases, at more than

23,000, followed by the suburbs south of Manila, the capital, which had more than 16,500 cases. Parts of

the southern island of Mindanao also reported a high number of infections. (Emir , 2019)

Around 120 Chinese workers are included in the list of some 400 dengue cases among employees

of a coal-fired power plant in Mariveles town here, said the provincial health office.Provincial board

member DrGodofredo Galicia discussed the report during a regular session of the

SangguniangPanlalawigan in the capitol city of Balanga.Galicia, who also heads the

SangguniangPanlalawigan Committee on Health, said that there were only 57 cases of dengue in

Mariveles from January to August in 2018. But this year, for the same period, the Bataan PHO recorded

398 cases among employees of the GNPower coal-fired plant – 120 of which were Chinese. (Datu 2019)
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to assess the efficiency of APMC in terms of the number of mosquito

that were caught and the numbers of mosquito related diseases.

Specifically it seeks answers to the following questions

1. What is the effect of the blue LED light to the mosquitoes so that it can be used as bait?

2. Which places of the house will the product must be placed?

3. What is the impact of the device to the number of cases of mosquito related diseases

inside the household?

Null Hypotheses:

1. There is no significant effect to the number of mosquito

2. There is no significant effect to the number of cases of mosquito related diseases

3. The blue LED light has no effect to the mosquito

4. The outside of the house is not the most ideal location to place a mosquito catcher

Alternative Hypotheses:

5. There is a significant effect to the number of mosquito

6. There is a significant effect to the number of cases of mosquito related diseases

7. The blue LED light has an effect to the mosquito

8. The outside of the house is the most ideal location to place the mosquito catcher

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study was conducted from September 2019 to February 2019 in Bataan National

High School, Roman Super Highway, Balanga City, Bataan. The experimental procedures for the

data gathering and analysis were performed at the Researchers residences at Pilar, Dinalupihan,

Balanga and Samal.

I. Construction of Framework
The framework consists of connected PVC pipes and cardboards with the

measurement of 7 inches and 12.5 centimeters respectively. The PVC pipes are to

be used for the initial structure of the device. For the structure to be three-

dimensional, three pipes that are connected perpendicularly should be used.

Figure2. The Framework of the product

To be able to connect the PVC pipes to form a cube, a three-way PVC

fitting should be used to every corner of the cube, but since three-way PVC

fittings were currently not available, a two-way PVC fitting is used instead, with

it connecting two pipes and wires were used for the third one. After the PVC

pipes were properly secured, next came the walls, which was made with

illustration board taped in both sides to prevent it from getting wet. 4 for the sides

and one to form the face, two of these ‘walls’ were needed so there was 10

cutouts in total. One of the faces have several thick diagonal cuts aligned to where

the fan will be attached, making the device a two-way trap, if a mosquito were to

go at the top of the device, then it will be sucked in by the fan, if a mosquito were
to go inside, then the fan will push it down to the container where the already

caught mosquitoes are.

II. Installation of the ArduinoSystem

The Arduino Uno board is a microcontroller based on the ATmega328. It

has 14 digital input/output pins in which 6 can be used as PWM outputs, a 16

MHz ceramic resonator, an ICSP header, a USB connection, 6 analog inputs, a

power jack and a reset button. This contains all the required support needed for

microcontroller. In order to get started, they are simply connected to a computer

with a USB cable or with an AC-to-DC adapter or battery. Arduino Uno Board

varies from all other boards and they will not use the FTDI USB-to-serial driver

chip in them. It is featured by the Atmega16U2 (Atmega8U2 up to version R2)

programmed as a USB-to-serial converter (Watelectronics.com, 2019).

Figure3. Installation of Arduino Uno and LCD

III. Programming of Arduino Uno

The on and off of the fluorescent light and the fan are Arduino-

programmed. The Researchers used Arduino because it’s a great tool for

developing interactive objects, taking inputs from a variety of switches or sensors

and controlling a variety of lights, motors and other outputs. Arduino projects can

be stand-alone or they can be connected to a computer using USB.The device will

be using an on and off program for the LED light that will attract the mosquitoes,

it is useful for the device to automatically turn on during the ideal time when

mosquitoes are most active and turn off when mosquitoes are ‘asleep’ to help the

user save time.

IV. Installation of LED Light and the Fan

LED - The light bulbs that attract the most insects are compact

fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs, which emit violet wavelengths that the bugs love.

Flying critters also adore regular incandescent bulbs. And yes, regular,

blueLEDs (the kind that is most like daylight to our eyes) also attract a fair

number of insects. the fan to the dry chamber where it will dry up and die.Bulbs

that emit more short wavelengths of light (cool white/bluish color)

will attract more bugsHeat can also draw bugs into an area. LED lights produce

more to little UV light and a minuscule amount heat, which makes them more

attractive to bugs—so long as they emit longer wavelengths of light.

Figure4. Installation of the fan and LED

12V FAN - DC technology has become much more sophisticated in recent

years, and it can now be applied to both residential and industrial ceiling fans. DC

fans have motors that rely on permanent magnets in order to attract and repel a

rotor around the axis using electronic switching. DC technology is much newer

than AC technology, which means there are fewer options available.

Consumes less power

DC fans are widely regarded as the most efficient type of fans. They

consume significantly less power than AC fans. In fact, DC fans consume up to

70 percent less energy to produce the same output as traditional AC fan types.

This means, that a 25-watt DC-driven yields the same results as 100-watt AC fan.

This is ideal for commercial settings, like restaurants, allowing you to keep fans

running all day without incurring astronomical electric bills.

Acoustically Quieter

DC fans make use of a new type (sin180) of electronically commutated

motor (ECM). Not only are these motors ultra-efficient, they are also incredibly

quiet. Because they are so quiet, DC fans are an excellent option for applications

such as medical instruments, telecom switches, or car entertainment systems,

where noise could be a nuisance.

Lower voltage

DC fans generally use less voltage than AC fans. The majority of DC fans

are low-voltage fans. For example, you can typically find 5V, 12V, and 24V

versions of DC fans. Larger models of DC fans, such as 119mm to 172mm fan

models, are typically available in 48V. In comparison, most AC cooling fan

models are available in 115V, a much higher voltage. Lower voltage also makes

DC fans potentially less dangerous.

V. Testing the Product

The researchers tested the device, the Arduino-Powered Mosquito

Catcher, by placing it at different locations inside the house. Namely, living room,

bedroom, terrace, and kitchen. The researchers were able to record the

number of mosquito caught by the APMC in these said areas.

VI. Statistical Analysis

The data collected from the APMC, namely the number of mosquitoes

caught with respect to location of product within the house premises,

undergo ANNOVA test to analyze these data, interpret the relationship of

the given variables and to see the significance level which decides whether

to reject or accept the null hypothesis

CONCLUSION

The researchers conclude that Arduino Powered Mosquito Catcher is efficient enough to

be used as innovation in diminishing the number of mosquito resulting to decrease of mosquito

related diseases. In connection to it, blue LED light effectively attracts mosquitoes due to violet

wavelengths cause by the blue LED. For most potent use of Arduino Powered Mosquito Caathe

r, the researchers recommend to place the APMC in terrace which is shown in the result of the

test executed.
RECOMMENDATION

Based on the study conducted, the possible recommendations are the following:

 Improve the sturdiness and portability of the product

Instead of cardboard, use an item that is much durable but is light like

plastic. A plastic framework is good to use not only because it is durable, but

it’s also waterproof and light-weight, perfect for products that are in need of

moving.

 Improve the product for the safeness of children

The fan is much better hidden or enclosed because there are

posssibilities that Children might take interest about the fan, this will be

dangerous for children for their fingers might get scratched by the fan.

 The ecological footprint is to be decreased

 Further study on how to make the product active only if a mosquito comes near
