Where more than one color is listed as an acceptable standard color, the Design Engineer
shall specify the color to be utilized.
The advantages of adhering to color codes and color standards are manifested in
minimizing errors and reducing accidents, as well as in improving operating
efficiency, safety and appearance.
The color codes and color standards presented herein are based on historical National
Grid Saudi Arabia practices and follow the accepted codes of the American Society
for Testing and Materials and the practices of National Safety Council, OSHA and
NFPA.
Since there are a limited number of colors that are readily distinguishable under all
conditions of lighting and aging, materials having some property in common are
grouped together under one base or ground color. Within each color group,
individual designations are indicated by a secondary color applied as a stripe, or used
for the color of letters in stencil. For reasons presented in Section 5.2, aluminum has
been reserved as a non-designating color except in a few instances where it is applied
as a secondary color stripe upon a base color.
Note:
1. The color chart above is only for representative purposes.
2. For matching paint colors, refer to the original RAL Color Chart issued by
RAL-F2 of Color Register RAL 84OHR of “Ausschuss fuer
Lieferbedingungen und Gutsicherung” (German Organization for
Specifications and Certification).

as guidance in providing an acceptable level of quality and practice. In case of conflict

2 TES-H-107.01 Painting
This section covers the use of colors to call attention to physical hazards, the location
of safety equipment and the identification of fire and other protective equipment. It is
not the intent of this code to be in conflict with any generally accepted standards or
regulations with respect to the use of colors or shape of markers in sea or air
navigation, or in railroad, or highway transportation.
This Safety Color Code is based on OSHA and American National Standards
Institute Z535.1, except for color specification which shall conform to RAL Color
shades.
Example:
Parts of machines that may cut, crush, shock, or otherwise injure, and to
emphasize such hazards when enclosure doors or other guards around
moving equipment is open or removed.
Examples: Inside removable guards for pulleys, shafts, chains, etc. Any
Stop valves associated with relief valves which for safety
reasons are required to be kept open.
5.1 Use
This Pipeline Identification Color Code is for use of all National Grid Saudi Arabia
systems except for cross-country pipelines.
Since it is often undesirable to paint the entire length of the many pipes present with
the base or ground color, aluminum has been reserved as a non-designating color. In
this case, the base color may be indicated by wide bands.
The base or ground colors and the groups of materials they represent are presented
below, listed roughly in order of decreasing hazard.
Color Fluids
White Steam
Chemicals (most of these being dangerous), Toxic,
Zinc Yellow
Radioactive, Explosive or flammable
Stone Gray Crude oil
Petroleum Gases, Napthas, Gasolines, Solvents, Jet
Bright Red Orange
Fuels
Oxide Red Kerosene, Diesel Oils, Waxy Distillates
Traffic Black Fuel Oils, Asphalt, Slop Oils
Gentian Blue Water
Emerald Green Air, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Freon
Fire Protection Materials and Equipment (except
Flame Red
trucks), Fire arresting materials
The narrow stripe presenting the secondary color which identifies the specific
material may be applied by painting or preferably by use of adhesive plastic tapes of
the correct color. These tapes manufactured for this purpose are available from many
vendors, with colors matching American Standards Association Colors. In addition,
the contents of the pipeline and/or direction of flow may be further identified by
arrows and legend.
The location and size of stripes and bands are recommended as follows.
On each side of and adjacent to valves and tees, and other fittings of
importance;
Where the pipe enters and emerges from walls and road and walkway
overpasses;
At uniform intervals along entire sections of the pipe;
When bands are employed in place of painting the entire line, these bands should be
300 mm long. Stripes should be 50 mm wide centered on the band and spaced 25
mm apart when two or three stripes are applied.
For pipeline for fire protection purposes; it shall be painted Flame red along the
entire length and the pipeline ends; joints and valves painted as per Section 5.6.
The following table presents the comprehensive Identification Color Code, listing
both band and stripe colors:

6.1 Use
This section covers the painting of the entire exterior surface of storage and fuel
tanks and in addition includes the contents identification color code. This
identification color code is consistent with the base colors for pipelines presented in
Section 5.3.
All petroleum products and all kind of water storage tanks (excluding crude
oil and asphalt tanks) shall be painted as follows:
b. Underground Tanks
The ladders and rungs for the following underground tanks are given as
below:
Asphalt and crude oil storage tanks are painted Traffic Black on all surfaces,
including pipe fittings. Spheroids are painted as above. The entire sphere is
Aluminum and the supporting base is Traffic Black.
Listed below are the various fuel tanks in use at National Grid Saudi Arabia facilities
with their identification color code:
For the purpose of easy identification, the following colors shall be used on all
chemical storage tanks:
Cont'd
Chemical storage tanks shall be painted on all surfaces with the identifying color.
The specific chemical contents will be stenciled in Arabic above English letters;
along with the concentration.
7.1 Use
This color standard and identification color code applies to all gas cylinders used by
National Grid Saudi Arabia. This is in accordance with American National Standards
Z535.1.
All Oxygen cylinders are to be painted and other types of compressed gas cylinders
left unpainted, or if painting is desired, the color shall be Aluminum, unless
otherwise the colors of other types of compressed gas cylinders shall be identified as
outlined in paragraphs 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4.
Identifying base colors presented below are applied as bands 50 mm wide located
immediately below the shoulder of the cylinder. These colors are:
The above identification colors shall apply to the gases indicated in paragraph 7.4
with the exception of Acetylene, Nitrogen and CO2. B B
In addition, cylinders are to be marked with the abbreviation or chemical symbol and
also the name of material contained in both English and Arabic. This marking is to
be in accordance with ANSI Z535.1 which specifies stenciling, stamping or labeling
which shall not be readily removable. The height of the lettering shall not be less
than one-twenty-fifth (1/25) of the diameter of the container with a minimum height
of 3 mm. Wherever practical, the marking shall be located at the valve end and off
the cylinder part of the body.
Vendor owned cylinders shall be color coded similar to company owned cylinders as
prescribed in Section 6.2, and 6.4 and shall be clearly identified with the Vendor’s
name or symbol.
The following table presents the names and chemical formulas of the gases, along
with the identification color for the container:
8.1 Use
This section presents the standard colors recommended for all National Grid Saudi
Arabia mobile equipment, as well as the identification color code required on mobile
tanks. Standard colors for mobile equipment are non-ANSI Z535.1 colors.
The following lists the standard colors for mobile equipment, except for tanks on
tank trucks and trailers. Individuals specifying or purchasing National Grid Saudi
Arabia mobile equipment which involve safety or security shall verify with the
Industrial Security Performance Development Department that colors specified
comply with current Government Regulations.
Primary Equipment:
Insulator washers Pure Orange body,
Diggers, Hole borers White roof and wheels,
