b)What is ‘you’? Why do you think ‘you’ was the best present that she got?
‘You’ means a diary. It was considered as the best present because she was in the habit of writing
a diary everyday and she liked the new diary that she received.

From which poem are the above lines taken? Name the poet.
The above lines are taken from the poem ‘Skater’ and the poet is Ted Kooser.
What is the figure of speech used here. Pick out the words.
The figure or speech is alliteration. Alliteration is a literary device that repeats a speech sound in a
sequence of words that are close to each other. The Alliterated words are : black but, that trailed,
bright blue, feathery fingers.
Interpret the above lines.
She looked beautiful in her black out fit. A contrast was provided by her yellow ribbon tied on her
pony tail, that trailed and floated from her cap. Her long tapering fingers appeared to be like the
wings of a bird.
2. I took every step very deliberately on the dangerous stretches.

a) Why did Bachendri have to do this?
Bachendri had to do this because the steep frozen slopes were hard and brittle as sheets of glass
and he had to use ice-axe and kick really hard with his crampons to get to the frozen surface.
b) What does ‘deliberately’ mean?
‘deliberately’ means intentionally.

Anne was not allowed to take part in gym class because her shoulders and hips tend to get
dislocated. As it was her birthday she got to choose whatever game she liked and she chose
Volleyball.
b) What was Anne asked to do as punishment for talking in Mr. Keesing’s class?
For talking in Mr. Keesing’s class, as a punishment Anne was made to write an essay entitled,
‘Quack, Quack,Quack, said Mistress Chatterback’. Anne got help from her friend Sanne who was
good at poetry. She helped her write the essay from beginning to the end.
c)Why did Ang Dorjee want to go to the top from the South Col and be back in a day?
Ang Dorjee wanted to climb to the top of Mount Everest from the South Col because he was
planning to climb without oxygen. He wanted to avoid long exposures at heights and a night at the
Summit Camp.
d)What were the various challenges that they faced in their Historic climb?
The various challenges that they faced were, the cold was intense, the steep frozen slopes were
as hard and brittle as sheets of glass and they had to use their ice-axe to kick really hard to get
across. The strong winds whipped up the powder snow, reducing visibility and the challenge of
crossing Hillary’s step was terrifying.

Imagine you are Anne Frank write an email to your friend recounting your experiences at school
and how you managed to outwit your teacher with your frankness.
