1. General
This user manual describes details of testing ABB RED670 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.
• Control Center
• Quick CMC
• Ramping
• Overcurrent
• State Sequencer
• Advanced Distance
• Diff operating characteristic
Any CMC test set can be used with this Protection Test Template.
Additionally, a synchronized timing source (CMGPS 588) is needed for End-to-End testing.
3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring an ABB RED670 relay to a CMC test set. The advised
connections are shown in Figure 1. These connections are the default settings in the
Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:
Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes most of the protection parameters of the relay.
5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object contains the ABB RED670 XRIO Converter, which includes setting parameters of the
modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the PCM600 software.
The Standard Filter for XRIO Files can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.
In this block, the analog inputs card type of TRM_40 of the relay has to be correctly selected
before importing the relay settings into the XRIO Converter. Furthermore the current and voltage
measurement channels for the input card have to be set.
This parameter shown in the figure below is normally active in the default configuration of
RED670 V2.2.1, so please deactivate it if necessary. If the parameter is active an additional delay
time tWaitForPHS (from the SMPPTRC logic block) is active in the relay to secure a 3-pole trip
when the phase selection fails.
Note: Please assure that the CB Close Command signal (Binary Output 1) of the CMC is connected to
the CB Close Cmd of the relay if the setting AutoInitMode is DLD disabled.
If ZCVPSOF is activated there are two different operate modes which can lead to a trip signal, the
impedance mode and the UILevel mode. To test the different combinations of activation and operate
modes there are four State Sequencer test modules.
The ZCVPSOF function is activated via binary signal and kept activated for the duration of tSOTF after the
signal drops off. The trip signal is issued with a distance zone. To verify the settings two different fault
scenarios are simulated:
Fault 1:
After the drop off from the CB close command in the second state the ZCVPSOF function is kept activated
for the duration of tSOTF. The fault in the next state is simulated at 95 % of the line length just before
tSOTF has expired. Therefore the fault should be cleared instantaneously.
Fault 2:
Afterwards the same fault is simulated just after the time tSOTF has expired. Now the relay must not trip
instantaneously but with the time of zone Z2.
The ZCVPSOF function is activated if a dead line is detected for at least the time tDLD. After the drop off
of this detection the ZCVPSOF function is kept activated for the duration of tSOTF. To verify these times
three different fault scenarios are simulated:
Fault 1:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t<tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should not be activated and the fault
at 95 % of the line length must be cleared within the trip time of zone Z2.
Fault 2:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t>tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should be activated. However as the
following fault at 95 % of the line length is simulated just after tSOTF has expired the ZCVPSOF function
is not active anymore and the fault must be cleared within the trip time of zone Z2.
Fault 3:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t>tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should be activated. As the following
fault at 95 % of the line length is simulated just before tSOTF has expired the ZCVPSOF function is still
active and the fault must be cleared instantaneously.
The ZCVPSOF function is activated via binary signal and kept activated for the duration of tSOTF after the
signal drops off. The trip signal is issued if a fault is present for a time t>tDURATION. To verify the
settings three different fault scenarios are simulated:
Fault 1:
After the drop off from the CB close command in the second state the ZCVPSOF function is kept activated
for the duration of tSOTF. As the fault in the next state is simulated just after tSOTF has expired the relay
must not clear the fault instantaneously.
Fault 2:
After the drop off from the CB close command in the second state the ZCVPSOF function is kept activated
for the duration of tSOTF. The fault in the next state is simulated just before tSOTF has expired. But as
the fault is not present for a time t>tDURATION the UILevel Detector must not issue a trip signal.
Fault 3:
After the drop off from the CB close command in the second state the ZCVPSOF function is kept activated
for the duration of tSOTF. The fault in the next state is simulated just before tSOTF has expired. The fault
is present for a time t>tDURATION and therefore it should be cleared instantaneously.
The ZCVPSOF function is activated if a dead line is detected for at least the time tDLD. After the drop off
of this detection the ZCVPSOF function is kept activated for the duration of tSOTF. The trip signal is
issued if a fault is present for a time t>tDURATION. To verify these times four different fault scenarios are
simulated:
Fault 1:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t<tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should not be activated and the fault
must not be cleared instantaneously.
Fault 2:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t>tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should be activated. However as the
following fault is simulated just after tSOTF has expired the ZCVPSOF function is not active anymore and
the fault must not be cleared instantaneously.
Fault 3:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t>tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should be activated. The fault in the
next state is simulated just before tSOTF has expired. But as the fault is not present for a time
t>tDURATION the UILevel Detector must not issue a trip signal.
Fault 4:
The dead line state is simulated for a time t>tDLD so that ZCVPSOF should be activated. The fault in the
next state is simulated just before tSOTF has expired. The fault is present for a time t>tDURATION and
therefore it should be cleared instantaneously.
To run the end to end tests corresponding test modules need to be open and then run simultaneously on
both CMCs. E.g. run the module “Line Differential external fault A-N (Relay 1)” on the CMC connected to
Relay 1 and “Line Differential external fault A-N (Relay 2)” on the other.
For the test of the differential characteristic it has to be assured that exactly the same test points are set in
the corresponding test modules for both relays.
