SECTION 1
INTRODUCTION
The Brandt HS3400 centrifuge is a high speed/high G-force decanting type unit
utilised for the continuous controlled removal of solids from contaminated fluids. The
functions of solids sedimentation, separation and draining are all combined in the
Brandt HS3400 centrifuge.
This manual contains information and instructions for safe operation, installation,
start up and maintenance of the Brandt HS3400 centrifuge and ancillary equipment.
All sections of this manual should be read and understood before attempting to
operate or service the equipment. As this is a high speed machine which can
generate forces in excess of 3000G particular emphasis should be given to the
safety section contained within this manual.
If in any doubt regarding safety or process suitability of HS3400 please contact any
of the Brandt service centres referenced inside front cover of this manual. Brandt
have a team of experienced Service Engineers who are normally available on a 24
hour call out basis should further assistance be required.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Do not remove guards or attempt to repair any rotating parts unless power is
safely isolated and machine is at rest.
4. Do not operate centrifuge unless all guards are securely fitted and bowl lid is
bolted in position.
6. Always use recommended tools and lifting appliances detailed in this manual
when attempting repairs, assembly or dismantling of centrifuge or its
components.
10. If undertaking electric welding on any part of the centrifuge ensure that no
earthing current passes through the bearings.
11. Do not operate HS3400 centrifuge until start-up and shutdown procedures are
fully understood.
12. Do not attempt to use the centrifuge for applications other than that stated in
the purchase order. Do not exceed maximum recommended speeds or
process specific gravity stated on nameplate.
13. Do not interchange bowl parts since specific parts are balanced as a unit.

14. Follow recommended oil level check procedure and recommended greasing
procedures and schedules.
All cases of chemical pitting, even under 1.5mm depth, should be watched
carefully. This action is almost always due to the breakdown of the passive
film on stainless bowl shell walls, in the presence of chlorides. This can occur
under heel cake that has not been cleaned from the bowl wall. High
temperature and high acidity accelerate the action.

UNIT DESCRIPTION
MAIN COMPONENTS
The Brandt HS3400 centrifuge consists of the following units and assemblies which
are identified in the general assembly drawings.
1. Bowl Assembly
The front hub is fitted with adjustable dam plates through which the clarified
liquor discharges and which regulate the pond depth of slurry within the bowl. The
outboard ends of the hubs are mounted in pillow blocks which in turn are fixed to the
main frame.
2. Conveyor Assembly
This unit is enclosed within the bowl assembly and is driven through the
hollow front hub by the splined output shaft of the gearbox. Conveyor is rotated
about the same horizontal axis and in the same direction as the bowl but at a slightly
lower speed.
The function of the conveyor is to scroll sedimented solids to the rear end of
the bowl and discharge these solids through the solids discharge porting at the
tapered end of the bowl. Conveyors are normally supplied with hard surfacing to
minimise wear on the flights.
3. Gearbox Assembly
This unit consists of a two stage epicyclic gearbox which is bolted directly to
the front hub of the bowl assembly. Differential drive is transmitted to the conveyor
via a splined output shaft in same direction of rotation as the bowl with a ratio of 51
turns of conveyor to 52 turns of bowl.
Gearbox reaction torque is transmitted via sun gear shaft protruding from
outer end of gearbox to a torque control assembly mounted on centrifuge frame.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
This assembly, bolted to the centrifuge main frame provides the reaction force
to the sun gear torque and automatically trips at preset value in event of transmission
overload.
In event of overload and subsequent tripping of this device conveyor and bowl
will rotate at same speed. A limit switch fitted to this assembly detects trip condition,
automatically stops both pump and centrifuge drive motors and provides visible and
audible alarms within control panel to indicate overload condition.
5. Casing Assembly
This unit encloses the bowl and directs the clarified liquid and solids streams
to two separate outlets positioned in lower section of casing. Casing is fitted with
internal baffles to ensure both streams remain segregated. The top half of the
casing is hinged to allow easy access to the bowl for inspection and maintenance
purposes. In operation a gasket is fitted between lid and lower casing and both parts
are securely bolted together.
6. Main Frame
This rigid fabricated unit supports both the main bearings and casing
assembly and is in turn bolted to the subframe. Accurate machining of bearing
locations ensures that rotating assemblies can be interchanged without any need for
shimming or any other adjustments.
7. Sub Frame
This unit carries the main frame and drive assembly. Sub frame has five
shock mounts fitted to underside which can be bolted directly to prepared foundation
for permanent installation or left bolted to transportation frame for mobile
installations. Fixed links are provided between sub frame and transportation frame
which are utilised during lifting and shipping of unit to prevent damage to shock
mounts.

UNIT DESCRIPTION
Charge pressure is provided by a small gear pump mounted to the main pump and
driven by a common shaft.
d) To continuously replenish the oil in the main system with oil from the reservoir.
In the neutral position, oil is pumped from the charge pump through the two check
valves in the main system. When the set pressure of the preset charge pump relief
valve is exceeded, oil flows through the valve to the pump housing and reservoir.
When the main system is operating, oil is pumped into the low pressure line through
one of the two check valves to compensate for leakage and to replenish from the
reservoir the oil which leaves the main system through the shuttle on the motor valve
block.
The preset relief valve is built into the motor manifold block and is normally set at 2
to 4 bar, lower than the charge pump pressure relief valve.
The shuttle valve, built into the motor manifold block, ensures that a quantity of hot
oil leaves the low pressure sides to run through the surge valve via motor and pump
housing to the reservoir.
This control valve is sandwiched between servo control valve and pump body on
Eaton units.
This is a pressure limiting valve and is controlled by presure in the high pressure line.
If the pressure in the high pressure line exceeds the set value, the action of the
pressure limiting valve moves the pump swashplate back towards neutral (i.e.
reducing flow) to a position corresponding to a lower oil flow than the operator has
set for the pump. It also provides controlled acceleration of centrifuge bowl and
minimises wear on drive belts during start up.

This valve is preset and is built into the motor manifold block.
Should a rise in pressure occur and pressure override fails to function, this valve will
dump system flow from H.P. line to L.P., by-passing motor.
This valve is built into the motor manifold block and is used to 'brake' the bowl when
speed is being decreased or when unit is being shutdown.
Due to large flow across this valve during decelleration pressure gauge will show up
to 50% more pressure than nominal pressure setting of valve.
NOTES:
a) All pressure settings, with the exception of pressure override, are factory
preset and cannot be adjusted in field without change of spring, and/or spacers.
d) On start-up of hydraulic pump, charge pump pressure gauge will show setting
of charge pressure relief valve.
On moving swashplate from neutral position, this gauge reading will decrease,
showing setting of purge relief valve and will continue to show this setting until pump
swashplate returned to neutral position.
e) Low pressure line gauge will show only charge pressure or purge pressure as
above, unless bowl is slowing down.

Maximum feed rate to the centrifuge is dependent on many variables including liquid
and solids properties into unit and desired output properties of end products in terms
of separation efficiency, dryness etc.
In addition, centrifuge settings in terms of bowl speed, differential speed and pond
depth will also affect the ultimate optimum feed rate.

As noted above, throughput and product quality can also be affected by pond depth
of slurry in bowl which is varied by change out of ring dams. Some common sizes of
ring dams together with corresponding pond depth and dry beach length are
tabulated here under.

INSTALLATION
TRANSPORTATION & HANDLING
a. The equipment is packaged to afford protection from rust and corrosion for a
period of twelve months if stored indoors.
The centrifuge may be shipped completely assembled or with the rotating assembly
removed and packed separately. In either situation, carefully unpack the equipment
and ensure that no damage is sustained. The rotating assembly should be handled
with particular care to avoid damaging any of the surfaces (see Component Lifting
Procedures).
MOUNTING OF CENTRIFUGE
When selecting a location for the centrifuge, the following basic requirements should
be considered.
a. The foundation for the frame/sub base and motor should be level and capable
of supporting the entire weight of the centrifuge (see 'Frame Installation').
c. Sufficient clear floor space or walkway must be provided around the centrifuge
to allow easy manipulation and setting down of components and assemblies
when removed from the machine; this is particularly important where two or
more units are group installed. Space should also be provided for
disassembling and cleaning at each end of the machine for removal of the
feed tube and gearbox.

FRAME INSTALLATION
d. Set the bolts for securing the vibration mounts to the foundation as shown on
the installation drawing for specific contract. If a concrete foundation is used,
grout the bolts in place and allow the grout to harden thoroughly.
e. Install the vibration mounts and level the top surface to within ± .8 mm (1/32")
ie, 1.6 mm (1/16") total, corner to corner, using an engineer's level.
f. Install the centrifuge complete with its sub base on the vibration mounts and
secure with nuts and washers.
Caution: If the frame and sub base are not level to within the limits stated
above, distortion will be introduced into the frame which may
cause rubbing of the bowl and casing, rubbing of the feed tube
against the rotating assembly, and bearing failure.
Note: Where centrifuge has been supplied complete with transportation base above
procedures have already been carried out in relation to that base, therefore
machine can be mounted via transportation base to a level foundation as per
paragraph (b) see General Arrangement in Section 12.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
If the HS3400 has been delivered as a complete unit and if handling equipment
capable of lifting the weight of the complete machine is not available, the rotating
assembly may be removed to reduce the overall weight; this may be achieved as
described in the 'Repair & Overhaul' section under 'Remove Rotating Assembly' (see
Index) after removal of shipping cradles from the bowl/casing.
Note: The shipping cradles are installed to prevent damage to the main bearings
during transit.
Re-install as described in the 'Repair & Overhaul' section under 'Install Rotating
Assembly' (see Index).
Note: The instructions given under the heading 'Remove Rotating Assembly' and
'Install Rotating Assembly' are mainly applicable to maintenance operations,
therefore, instructions such as 'Shut off Power' will not apply unless the motor has
been connected to the electrical supply.
FIGURE 4B

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
After installing and/or re-securing the rotating assembly into the frame and prior to
fitting the feed tube, install the drive belts.
a. Ensure the motor pulley and centrifuge pulley has not sustained nicks or burrs
during handling. Also check that the pulleys have not been contaminated with
dirt, oil or rust etc, all of which can damage drive belts; check the alignment of
the pulley by holding a straight edge against the pulley outer faces (see Figure
4C); any evidence of pulley wobble will make pulley alignment impossible.
b. Ensure that the drive belts are clean, dry and in good condition. If belts have
been contaminated by grease or oil, clean thoroughly with a suitable non
flammable cleaning agent.
d. Install belts on the motor and centrifuge pulleys and turn the belt adjusting
screw(s) in the appropriate direction (see Figure 4D).
iii. Adjust the tension in the belts to permit 16 mm deflection per metre
(1/64" deflection per inch) of span, measured at the centre of the span
of each belt, when a force of 1.5 to 2.0 kg (3.3 to 4.4 lbf) is applied at
90o to each belt by a hand held scale (see Figure 4E).
Note: There will normally be a drop in belt tension during the first 10 to 12 hours of
operation. During this run-in period, the belts tend to seat fully into the grooves of
the pulley and the initial stretch takes place. After the first 10 to 12 hours of running,
the drive should be stopped and another check made for correct tension.

a. Remove the four screws securing the feed tube clamping cap to feed tube
bracket (see Figure 4F), and withdraw the cap. Ensure that the feed tube
clamping surfaces are thoroughly cleaned.
Note
The feed tube bracket and its clamping cap are both marked with matching
alignment numbers or marks on the face or side of the bracket - when refitting
the cap these numbers or marks must coincide.
b. Insert the feed tube into the bowl until the collar on the tube contacts the face
of the bracket.
c. Assemble the clamping cap to the feed tube bracket ensuring screw holes are
aligned. Insert the four fixing screws and tighten evenly so that the clearance
between the cap and the bracket is even on both sides of the tube.
d. Install the belt guard and secure to the frame. (See General Arrangement).

a. Feed Line - The feed line from the pump should always be connected to the
end of the feed tube by means of a flexible hose. Brandt can provide hose
adaptor for end of feed tube if required.
Note - Never connect feed line to feed tube using rigid pipe. Also do not hang
undue weight on feed tube inlet as either of these conditions may deflect the
inner end of the tube and cause rubbing against the inside of the conveyor
resulting in premature failure of feed tube.
b. Solids Discharge - Any chute or adaptor hung off the rectangular solids
discharge flange should not weigh more than 50 kgs. Brandt can provide an
adaptor for this flange to use in conjunction with a tundish or sloping chute.
c. Effluent Line - As for solids discharge flange, maximum weight hanging from
liquid discharge flange should be less than 50 kgs. Connection from this
discharge point should be made into discharge line by tundish or flexible
connection. Brandt recommend 6" (150mm) discharge line for single
centrifuge discharged and 8" (200m) discharge line for dual centrifuge
installation.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
a. Ensure that the correct size pulleys are fitted to motor and centrifuge.
Warning: Never start the motor without the belt and gearbox guards and
upper casing securely in place.
Caution: Before attempting to start the centrifuge, ensure that the bowl
rotates freely; that the pillow blocks or bearing clamps are securely
attached to the frame and that the centrifuge is securely mounted.
b. Make temporary wiring connections to the motor at first, and momentarily start
the motor to ensure that the motor fan rotates in clockwise direction when
viewed from the cowl end of the motor.
e. All interlocks, alarms, etc. Necessary for safe start up, operation and
shutdown are incorporated within this panel.
Note - In wet and/or humid atmospheres it is recommended that electric motor anti-
condensation heaters be wired back to panel. Provided power is left on to
main control panel, heaters will be activated when motors are not being run.

PUMP INSTALLATION
g. Where this is not possible and pump has to be sited above tank level, suction
line should be fitted with priming point and foot valve should be fitted to end of
suction hose.
h. When fitting rigid suction and feed lines to pump ensure that undue stresses
are not induced in casing due to pipe misalignment.
j. Caution Never attempt to run pump dry even for short periods as severe
damage will occur to rotor, stator or both.

OPERATION
1. SPEED ADJUSTMENT
The reason for changing speed is to modify the G-force imparted to the slurry
in the centrifuge - generally increasing speed will improve clarification of
effluent and dryness of solids.
G-force for any decanting centrifuge at any given speed can be calculated as
follows:-
NOTE: It is very important that max centrifuge design speed for any
particular slurry S.G. is not exceeded. Refer to nameplate on
machine or purchase order acknowledgement for specified duties.

SPEED ADJUSTMENT
The Brandt HS 3400 Centrifuge supplied with a hydraulic drive will give infinite speed
adjustment from 1500 RPM to 4000 RPM. (1500 RPM minimum speed must be
achieved before Seepex pump will start).
To adjust speed simply turn the vernier control knob until the required speed is
shown on the speed indicator located in the monitoring panel. (See figure 5A.

2. FEED ADJUSTMENT
A table listing pump speeds and feeds for various combinations of gearbox and
electrical supply is provided in Section 3 of this manual under Unit Description -
Charging Pump details.
In some case, especially when processing slurries with high specific gravity,
minimum pump feed may be in excess of centrifuge capacity. Under these
circumstances a tee-piece should be fitted in pump delivery line with shut off valve to
allow proportion of feed volume to be bypassed and returned to suction tank.
The degree of sedimentation which takes place in the centrifuge bowl for any specific
application is a function of centrifugal force applied and the average retention time of
the liquid phase in the bowl.
Centrifugal force changes are effected by changes to speed while retention time
changes can be achieved by either adjustment of feed rate or by altering volume of
liquid in bowl.
Volume of liquid in the bowl can be altered by regulating the pond depth within the
bowl. Refer to table in Section 3 of this manual under Unit Description - Technical
Details for ring dam sizes available and corresponding pond depths and dry beach
lengths. Normally maximum clarification is achieved at deep pond depth although
there are special cases where the reverse is the result. Deep pond depths also
result in wetter solids and reduces scrolling torque levels.
The optimum pond depth for each application can only be determined by analysis of
results. However, as a general rule of thumb:-

OPERATION
This mechanism provides the reaction force to the sun gear torque arm and
automatically trips at pre-set value in event of transmission overload. In event of
overload and subsequent trip both pump and main drive motors will be automatically
shut down. Motors cannot be restarted until mechanism in reset.
a. Shut off power to the drive motor and lock starter in 'OFF' position.
c. Remove the screws securing the gearbox guard and withdraw the guards.
(i) Endeavour to turn the torque arm by hand in clockwise direction. If the
torque arm turns without obstruction and the gearbox remains
stationary; this indicates that the conveyor is not blocked or stalled
within the bowl; if the gearbox rotates when the arm is turned a
blockage is indicated.
(ii) If the torque arm turns and the gearbox remains stationary, endeavour
to rotate the gearbox casing by hand. If the gearbox will not rotate, a
blockage in the casing is indicated.
e. If the centrifuge has cleared itself, reset the torque control by applying
sufficient hand pressure to torque control lever in the anti-clockwise direction
to overcome the pressure of the compression link assembly and to set the
lever over-centre against the stop pin.
g. Reinstall and secure the safety guard assembly and recommence operation.
h. If the centrifuge has not cleared itself, reset the torque control mechanism as
described above, introduce a wash liquid into the centrifuge bowl and restart
the machine. Continue washing until all solids are cleared; the bowl will
usually free itself of solids during the period of acceleration when centrifugal
force is at lower value than at full speed. As soon as the bowl is clear, the
slurry feed can be restarted.

PROCESS
Centrifuge handling capacity (throughput), dryness of solids discharge and cut point
(size of particles removed) will vary according to the viscosity of the mud, the particle
size distribution within the mud and the following variables within the centrifuge
package.
Pond depth within the centrifuge bowl (adjustable by changing ring dam plates).
(Ring dam plate numbers relate to the diameter in millimeters of the pond).
At a given speed, better separation (cut point) is achieved by longer retention time
within the centrifuge. Longer retention time is achieved by:-
Insufficient Separation (Cut): Pond depth too shallow. Feed rate too high.
Conveyor flights worn. Incorect bowl speed.
Solids too wet: Pond depth too high. Feed rate too high.
Solids too dry: Pond depth too shallow. Insufficient feed rate.

INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE
PERIODIC CHECKS
The following operation checklist details checks that should be made at the
beginning of each shift or at intervals decided by plant engineering or management
staff. It is strongly recommended that all operators become familiar with the list and
perform the checks regularly. This will increase efficiency by preventing oversights
that can cause delay or costly damage to the equipment.
Ideally the list should be reproduced as a chart which could be hung up at the
workstation and marked off as each check is completed.

LUBRICATION
- Remove both plugs from bearing housings and fit grease nipple
(supplied in tool kit) to one side.
When greasing these bearings, always ensure that grease escape hole is not
plugged. Grease very slowly and rotate torque arm forwards and backwards
respectively to distribute grease. Continue greasing until clean grease
emerges from escape channel.
Smear door threads with lubricator every occasion door is opened, or at least
once every 4 weeks.
Do not use any abrasive materials (e.g. Brasso) on door threads. To clean
use white spirit, paint brush and clean cloth.

LUBRICATION
GEARBOX
The gearbox is normally supplied ready filled with lubricant, but the oil should still be
checked before initial start up; it should subsequently be checked every two months
unless otherwise specified, and changed every twelve months. Mild EP type Mineral
oil such as Shell Macoma R220 is required which must be of a non-corrosive nature.
Any additives should be such that they will not separate out under continuous
centrifuging.
a. Shut off the power to the drive motor and lock the starter in 'OFF' position.
c. Remove the screws securing the gearbox guard and withdraw the guards.
FIGURE 7A
f. If consistent loss of oil is evident, check the pinion shaft seal i.e., where the
torque arm is attached to the gearbox; also check the gearbox adapter area
i.e. where the gearbox is attached to the bowl hub.
If leakage occurs from the pinion shaft seal, this may be replaced as
described under 'Gearbox Assembly' (see Index). If leakage is evident around
the gearbox adapter, the complete gearbox must be returned to Drexel
Service Department for factory repair.

CONVEYOR BEARINGS
The front and rear conveyor bearings are lubricated at the factory before shipment,
and must be lubricated at least once every 4 weeks of operation.
a. Grease introduced through the grease fitting situated in the wall of the
gearbox adapter (see Figure 7B) passes along the bore of the hub extension
to the spline bushing and into the conveyor bearings. Excess grease passes
back through an escape channel in the bowl hub extension, which terminates
in an aperture through the extension wall within the casing seal holder.
b. Inject grease of the recommended grade slowly into the grease fitting until
clean grease emerges from the escape channel.
Note:
(I) During greasing, remove the upper front parts of the gearbox guard and
rotate the torque arm forwards and backwards alternately. This will
distribute the grease and reduce the risk of possible rupture of the
grease seals. Reinstall the guard securely after greasing and before
starting the machine.
(II) If any resistance to the input of grease is experienced, this will indicate
plugged channels; in this event, greasing should be stopped
immediately to prevent possible damage to the seals. The escape
channel must then be cleared, if necessary by removing the pillow block
assembly and clearing with a suitable rod or wire.
(III) If during greasing, dirt or centrifuge product emerges from the escape
channel, this will indicate that the bearing seals are damaged and in
need of replacement as described under 'Disassemble Front Bearing'
(see Index).

(IV) If during greasing, metal chips emerge with the old grease, this will
indicate bearing deterioration that should be checked as described
under 'Disassemble Front Bearing' (see Index).
a. Grease introduced through the grease fitting situated in the pulley hub
adjacent to the rear pillow block (see Figure 7C) passes directly along a
channel in the bowl hub extension to the conveyor bearing. Excess grease
passes back through a parallel escape channel in the bowl hub extension wall
within the casing seal holder.
b. Inject grease of the recommended grade into the grease fitting until clean
grease emerges from the escape channel.
Note: (i) During greasing, remove the gearbox guard and rotate the
torque arm forwards and backwards alternately. This will
distribute the grease and reduce the risk of possible rupture of
the grease seals. Reinstall the guard securely after greasing and
before starting the machine.
(iv) If during greasing, metal chips emerge with the old grease, this will indicate
bearing deterioration that should be checked as described under 'Disassemble Rear
Bearing' (see Index)

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
The main bearings, situated in the front and rear pillow blocks are lubricated at the
factory before shipment. After initial filling, grease replenishment is normally
necessary every 1500 working hours (2 months continuous). If however, conditions
are such that condensation can occur inside the bearing chamber, this interval
should be reduced to 500 or 750 hours depending on the severity of the conditions.
b. Ensure that the drive belt and gearbox guards are securely in place.
c. Ensure that the upper casing is closed and secured to the lower casing.
d. Remove the grease plugs from the front and rear pillow blocks (see Figure
7D).
e. Insert grease fitting into one of the holes in each pillow block that was vacated
by the grease plugs.
f. Run the machine so that the bowl is rotating at normal speed, and inject
grease in small amounts at intervals sufficient to allow the grease temperature
to rise gradually.
g. If the grease escape hole is plugged with hardened grease, insert the grease
fitting into the plugged aperture and inject grease in the reverse direction.
h. When front and rear main bearings have been lubricated successfully remove
the grease fittings and run the machine for approximately 10 hours with all
four holes open to allow excess grease and trapped air to exhaust through the
apertures.
i. After the requisite setting period, install the grease plugs securely.
j. When the machine is running but slurry is not being fed, or if the slurry feed is
cool, the normal running temperature of the pillow blocks is less than 50oC
(120oF). When the bearings are first filled however, the temperature will rise
above this point for a short period of time but should not be in excess of 75oC
(165oF).

TORQUE CONTROL
(Ref Drwg 034-802-000 in Section 12).
The inside of the female spring compression link and the outside of the male spring
compression link projection are lubricated at the factory before shipment and should
normally be greased every four weeks. On certain applications however, shorter
intervals between greasing may be necessary.
b. Shut off the power to the drive motor and lock the starter on 'OFF' position.
d. Remove the screws securing the gearbox guard and withdraw the guard.
e. Using industrial protective gloves, or suitable setting bar, manually trip the
torque control by turning torque control lever (034-065-000) in clockwise
direction until it snaps over centre and rests against the stop pin.
f. Loosen locknut (034-057-000) and turn adjusting nut out all the way.
g. Remove split pin (001-056-401) from pin (034-056-000) and remove the pin
from compression link (034-060-100). Slide the male compression link from
female compression link (034-060-101).
h. Apply the appropriate grease to the inside of the female compression link and
the outside of the projection of the male compression link and reassemble the
two parts. Reconnect the male link to the torque control lever with pin (034-
056-000) and split pin (001-056-401) ensure that the drain hole in the male
compression link is positioned at the bottom.
i. Adjust and reset the torque control as described under 'Assemble Torque

BOWL CLEANSING
Where a specific process dictates that the centrifuge bowl must be flushed with hot
water, caustic or other dilutant, whether regularly or otherwise, this should be
undertaken before shutting down. Arrangements should be made to divert the flow
of flushing medium for the duration of the flushing operation to prevent contamination
of the effluent.

m. If this method of cleaning does not remove all the deposits, the bowl must be
disassembled as described in 'Repair & Overhaul' section (see Index) and
each part must be cleaned individually
n. After cleaning, re-assemble the bowl etc, close and secure the casing and
securely refit the gearbox guard and belt guard.

The filter element must be exchanged as soon as the pressure drops below 0.75 bar
absolute (-0.25) when the transmission is at normal operating temperature. The filter
must also be exchanged each time the pressure fluid is changed.
Filtration Grade = 10 micron nominal.
Under normal operating conditions, the oil should be changed at the following
intervals:
The first oil change should be carried out after maximum 80-100 hours of operation
but at the latest one year after first-time operation.
The second change should take place after maximum 500 hours of operation but at
the latest one year after first-time operation.
Thereafter, the oil should be changed at least every 1000 hours of operation or at
least once a year.
To change the oil; the used fluid must be drained off when the system is at operating
temperature! Remove any residual dirt or sludge from the reservoir.
Oil samples should be taken every 500 hours of operation. To do this take
approximately 0.5 litres of oil from a point on a level with the inlet (suction)
connection. Fill the sample in a container that is free of residues.
Leak Test
Carry out leak test on the transmission (inlet line, pipe and hose lines and
connections, valves, control elements, pump and motor) giving due consideration to
the service life of the transmission, environment protection and reduction of oil
consumption.
Tighten up any leaking joint and other connections while the system is not under
pressure.

BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
Cleanliness
Make certain that the air filter/breather for ventilation of the oil reservoir is regularly
cleaned, since the input pressure may be affected if it is dirty. If there is an oil
cooler, the cooler surface should be kept free from contamination. On units, which
have hose couplings on the connection pipes, contamination of any sort must be
avoided. Cotton rags or lint cleaning cloths may not be used for cleaning. Use only
lint-free materials.
When changing the oil, be sure the area around the filler cap is free from foreign
objects. The oil, which can be kept clean by using a filter cloth, should be added by
means of a clean funnel.
The level of the oil should be checked daily using the gauge glass. In cases of loss
of oil, the leak must be rectified.

hoist and bowl as described in (n) above.
Warning: Take great care when guiding the rotating assembly into the frame
that hands, fingers or clothing etc are not vulnerable in the event
of accidental release of lifting gear.
Lift the rotating assembly and suspend it centrally over the centrifuge frame.
Carefully lower the assembly until the mounting faces of the pillow blocks are
just clear of the top face of the frame pads, then insert the dowel pin outer
sleeves through the pillow blocks and into the frame as follows:-
Warning: The importance of the pillow block dowels and sleeves should not
be underestimated. Correct and careful assembly is essential to
the safety and smooth running of the centrifuge.
(i) Align the pillow block dowel holes with those in the frame pads by
inserting a suitable length of steel rod (slightly smaller in diameter than
the holes) through one of the dowel holes in each of the pillow blocks
and into the frame.
(ii) With the pillow block and frame holes accurately aligned, lower the
rotating assembly further until the pillow blocks just touch the frame
pads, then press one dowel sleeve into the vacant hole in each pillow
block; use only hand pressure and ensure that the recessed end of the
sleeve enters the hole first. The sleeves must not be forced into place
by hammering as this will damage the sleeves and the frame; if more
than hand pressure is necessary to position the sleeve fully against the
shoulder at the bottom of the hole, carefully tap into place with a soft
faced mallet.
(iii) Remove the two locating rods and insert the remaining two sleeves.

b. Insert the pinion shaft into the gearbox, taking care to mesh the gear teeth on
the first stage planet gears. The inner end of the pinion shaft is supported by
a bearing within the gearbox and must enter the bearing within the gearbox
and must enter the bearing as the shaft is inserted. If the pinion outer bearing
(pressed on the shaft) does not enter the recess in the gearbox front cover
completely, agitate the shaft slightly to enter it in the bearing. Once entered,
the pinion shaft may be pushed fully into place allowing the outer bearing to
seal fully in the recess in the front cover.
c. Press a new pinion shaft oil seal into oil seal housing. Insert screws into the
seal housing and assemble a new housing gasket to the housing by locating it
on the screws.
d. Apply an even film of mineral oil to the bore of the seal and install the
assembly to the gearbox front cover; secure in place with screws.
e. If replacement of the pinion bearing was undertaken with the gearbox out of

Warning: Take great care when removing the conveyor from the bowl that
hands, fingers and clothing etc are not vulnerable in the event of
accidental release of lifting gear. Guide only by exerting side pressure
against the hoist chain; do not grasp the conveyor flights.
Note: Conveyor should always be removed from the bowl vertically (see
figure 8K) to prevent damage to tungsten carbide tiles.
d. Attach the conveyor lifter securely to the vacant screw holes in the conveyor
front seal holder using hex head, high tensile steel M10 x 60 screws (not
supplied). Connect the lifter to a hoist using 'D' shackle and carefully withdraw
the conveyor from the bowl (see Figure 8K). Once clear of the bowl, lay the
conveyor horizontally on wood blocks to keep it from rolling or in the case of a
tiled conveyor, set it carefully on a conveyor stand; take care not to chip the
tiles. Remove the conveyor lifter.
Note: The conveyors have flights which are 'hard surfaced' to resist
wear from particularly abrasive process material. A
characteristic of hard surfacing is the evidence of radial cracks in
the hard surface material. The characteristic occurs during
manufacture, and is the result of the different rate of expansion
and contraction of the basic metal of the conveyor flight and hard
surfacing material when cooling.

and free from oil or dirt, insert bush in hub so that holes line up.
b. Sparingly oil thread and point of grub screws, or thread and under head of cap
screws. Place screws loosely in holes threaded in hub, shown thus ! in
diagram.
c. Clean shaft and fit hub to shaft as one unit and locate in position desired,
remembering that bush will nip the shaft first and then hub will be slightly
drawn on to the bush
f. If a key is to be fitted place it in the shaft keyway before fitting the bush. It is
essential that it is a parallel key and side fitting only and has TOP
CLEARANCE.
g. After drive has been running under load for a short time stop and check
tightness of screws.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
After installing and/or re-securing the rotating assembly into the frame and prior to
fitting the feed tube, install the drive belts.
a. Ensure the motor pulley and centrifuge pulley have not sustained nicks or
burrs during handling. Also check that the pulleys have not been
contaminated with dirt, oil or rust etc, all of which can damage drive belts;
check the alignment of the pulley by holding a straight edge against the pulley
outer faces (see Figure 8EE); any evidence of pulley wobble will make pulley
alignment impossible.
b. Ensure that the drive belts are clean, dry and in good condition. If belts have
been contaminated by grease or oil, clean thoroughly with a suitable non
flammable cleaning agent.
d. Install belts on the motor and centrifuge pulleys and turn the belt adjusting
screw(s) in the appropriate direction (see Figure 8EE).
iii. Adjust the tension in the belts to permit 16mm deflection per metre
(1/64" deflection per inch) of span, measured at the centre of the span
of each belt, when a force of 1.5 to 2.0kg (3.3 to 4.4 Ibf) is applied at
90o to each belt by a hand held scale (see Figure 8FF).
Note: There will normally be a drop in belt tension during the first 10 to 12
hours of operation. During this run-in period, the belts tend to seat fully
into the grooves of the pulley and the initial stretch takes place. After
the first 10 to 12 hours of running, the drive should be stopped and
another check made for correct tension.
