Magic Flute Dialogue
Tam: Where am I? Am I still alive? Did some higher power save me? The vicious snake is dead?
Tam (during prelude to Pap aria): What was that? What a strange place! Who’s coming?
Dialogue page 28
1st Lady: Prepare yourself with courage and steadfastness, for the Queen –
2nd Lady: wants me to tell you –
3rd Lady: that the path to your future happiness now lies open to you.
1st Lady: She has heard every word you said. She has –
2nd Lady: read every expression on your face and –
3rd Lady: decided to make you completely happy. She said that if this young man is as zealous
and brave as he is kindhearted, then my daughter will certainly be saved!
Tam: She will be saved! I swear it by my love and by my heart! (Short, loud thunder) What was
that?
1st Lady: That’s the arrival of the Queen! (Thunder)
Three Ladies: There she is!
ARIA – Queen of the Night
Dialogue page 32
Tam: Did I really just see that?! (He wants to leave, but Papageno stops him)
Dialogue page 46
Mon: Servants! Bring chains!
ARIA - Monostatos
Dialogue page 50
Pam: (Speaks as if in a dream): Mother! Mother! Mother! Am I still alive? This is worse than
death!
Pap: There she is! You – daughter of the Queen of the Night!
Pam: (gets up) Queen of the Night? Who are you?!
Pap: I’m a messenger from the Queen.
Pam: From the Queen?! My mother?! What’s your name?
Pap: Papageno.
Pam: Papageno? I’ve heard your name before! Then you know my good, loving mother?
Pap: Are you the daughter of the Queen of the Night? (She nods) Then, yes. Wait! Let me
check! (He takes out her portrait which the Prince gave him and which he has been wearing
around his neck.) Eyes – black. Lips – red. Hair – blond/brown. Everything looks right to me….
except for the hands and feet because, according to this picture, you don’t have any!
Pam: Let me see! Yes, that’s my portrait, but how did you get it?!
Pap: Well, for years I have delivered the finest birds I could catch to your mother and her ladies
at the palace. Just as I was about to hand over the birds, I saw someone standing in front of me
who called himself Prince. He impressed your mother so much that she gave him your portrait
and ordered him to set you free. He fell in love with you as soon as he saw your portrait and
immediately decided to save you.
Pam: He loves me?! Oh, say that again!
Pap: Come on! Your eyes will light up when you see the handsome Prince.
Pam: But wait! What if this is a trap! What if you were really sent by Sarastro?
Pap: What? A trap? Why would I do that?
Pam: I’m sorry! Forgive me if I offended you! You have a kind heart.
Pap: Yes, I do. But what good does it do me? Papageno still hasn’t found a Papagena!
Pam: Poor man! You mean you have no wife?
Pap: Not even a girlfriend, let alone a wife!
Pam: Be patient, my friend. You will have a wife sooner than you think!
DUET – Papageno and Pamina
Dialogue page 83
Sar: Today’s assembly is one of the most important of our time. Prince Tamino waits at the
door of the temple. Our foremost duty will be to watch over this young man who is seeking for
wisdom and virtue, and extend to him the hand of friendship. The gentle, virtuous Pamina has
been chosen for him. Therefore I have torn her away from her proud mother, who intends to
destroy the firm foundations of our temples. But she will not succeed. Tamino himself will
become one of us and will help us strengthen the power of virtue and wisdom.
Speaker: Will Tamino be able to prevail against the hard ordeals that await him? He is a prince.
Sar: More than that – He is a man.
ARIA – Sarastro
Dialogue page 85
(Speaker – Ed, 2nd Priest – Gabe in spoken dialogue, but sing 1st Priest)
Tam: Are you still there?
Pap: It’s so dark, I can’t really tell, but…. (thunder) … Help!!
Tam: What’s wrong?
Pap: I think I’m getting a slight fever!
Tam: Shame on you, Papageno! Be a man!
Pap: I wish I were a girl! (Very loud thunder!) Uh oh…. My hour has come!
Speaker: Why have you intruded upon our sanctuary? What do you seek from us?
Tam: Friendship and love.
Speaker: Are you prepared to fight for these virtues and go through every one of the trials…. At
the risk of your very life?
Tam: I am. Wisdom will gain my victory and Pamina will be my reward!
Speaker: Give me your hand. (They shake hands.) (To Papageno): Will you, too, fight for the
love of wisdom?
Pap: Fighting is not exactly my line of work. I just need sleep, food, and drink…. And, if I could
catch a pretty little wife…..
2nd Priest: That you shall never do unless you undergo our trials!
Pap: Then I’ll remain single!
2nd Priest: But if Sarastro has already chosen a bride for you who resembles you perfectly?
Pap: Is she young?
2nd Priest: Young and beautiful, …... and her name is Papagena.
Pap: Pa-pa---
2nd Priest: Papagena!
Pap: I would like to see her! But…. After I see her will I have to die? (2nd Priest shrugs his
shoulders.) Then I’ll remain single!
2nd Priest: You may see her, but you may not speak to her. Can you control your tongue?
Pap: Yes! (They shake hands.)
Speaker: You, too, Prince, must remain silent. If you fail in this test, you both are lost. You will
see Pamina, but you may not speak to her. This is the beginning of your trial.
DUET – Two Priests
Dialogue page 86
Pap: Hey! We need some lights here! Every time these men leave us I can’t see my hand in
front of my face!
Tam: Be patient! We have to get through this! (The Three Ladies appear with lanterns.)
Dialogue page 96
Speaker: Your steadfast bearing has won a victory! Now we must continue our journey! Come
on!
2nd Priest: What happened? Get up, friend! What happened to you?
Pap: I fainted!
2nd Priest: Get up, pull yourself together, and act like a man!
Pap: OK, but why, Sir, do I have to go through all these tests and trials? If a Papagena has
already been chosen for me, why do I have to work so hard to win her?
2nd Priest: Let your own common sense answer that question. Come on, my responsibility is to
lead you on to the next test.
Pap: With all this wandering around, I feel like giving up on love forever!
Dialogue page 96, cont.
Mon: Here she is - the modest beauty! What a vision! If I knew ….. that I was all alone and no
one was watching….. one little kiss….. could certainly be overlooked!
Dialogue page 98
Queen: Away with you!!
Pam: Mother! My Mother!
Mon: Her mother?! I’ll have to watch this from over here……
Queen: You may thank the power which took you from me that I still call myself your mother!
Do you see this dagger? It has been sharpened for Sarastro….. and YOU will kill him!!
Pam: But dearest Mother!
Queen: Not a word!
