1 General Layout Information:

Check design drawings for access and gantry protection scaffold.

Various areas of bridging will be checked.
External face of scaffold will be clad with Monarflex sheeting for protection.

Each tying option to be considered for anchor forces.

2 Imposed Loading:

2no working lifts at any one time

1no rated at 1.5kN/m2
1no rated at 0.75kN/m2
Inside boards on working platforms rated at 0.75kN/m2
Gantry rated at 0.75kN/m2

Wind load calculated in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4

No snow loading allowed for, therefore Main Contractor to stop works until any snow
has been cleared off the scaffold before any works continue.

3 Consider Scaffold Configuration:

Check Boards: Supporting transoms at 1.2m maximum centres

Scaffold board target span = 1.2m

From TG20:13 a span of 1.2m for an imposed load will be acceptable.

Check Transoms:

Maximum centres = 1.2m

Scaffold width = 5+3

Self weight of boards/transom

= 0.25kN/m2x1.2m = 0.3kN/m

Imposed load+self weight/transom on main 5no board wide run

= (1.5kN/m2 + 0.25kN/m2)x1.2m = 2.1kN/m
Imposed load/transom on inside 2no boards
= (0.75kN/m2 + 0.25kN/m2)x1.2m = 1.2kN/m

RM = 1.12kNm (TG20:13)

1.12kNm > 0.336kNm Acceptable

Concentrated load condition of 1.5kN over 500mm x 500mm area

Treat as a point load for ease of calculation

Scaffold width = 5+4 with brace

By inspection spur brace will be acceptable supporting reaction of 0.3kN

From various loading conditions above

By inspection worst case load on inner ledger = 2.6kN

Treat ledger as a continuos member

Bending moment = (WL)/5
= (2.6kNx1.8m)/5 = 0.936kNm

1.12kNm > 0.936kNm Acceptable

Consider double width scaffold fully working

Load on ledger = 1.25m x 1.2m x 1.75kN/m2 = 2.625kN

Bending moment = (2.625kNx1.8m)/5 = 0.945kNm

1.12kNm > 0.945kNm Acceptable

7 Consider Section E-E:
Inner leg load = 15.4kN
Maximum vertical tie spacings
Worst case is when tied every floor level = 3.31m (5th - 6th Floor)
Effective length of uprights = 2.96m
SWL of = 15.24kN
By inspection this will be acceptable as this occurs at high level. Tie spacings below
are less onerous where full leg load acts.

Maximum vertical tie spacings below 5th floor = 3.16m

Effective length of uprights = 2.9m
SWL of = 16.15kN Acceptable

Centre leg load above gantry = 15.0kN

8 Consider Tie loads:

Site Address: Layden House, Turnmill Street. EC1M 5QU

Site Grid Reference: = TQ315819

Vb map = 22.0m/s
Cseason = 1
Cprob = 0.83
Reference Height = 22.0m

Peak Velocity Pressure qp = 0.575kN/m2

Cpe for wind parallel = 1.2

Scaffold is tied with 3no options:

Option 1) Tied to floor slabs and at every alternate frame:

Overall tie spacings = 3.6m x 3.65m

= 13.14m2

Load = 13.14m2 x 0.575kN/m2 x 1.2 = 9.0kN

Option 2) Tied to columns at every lift level: = 6.5m x 3.0m

= 19.5m2

Load = 19.5m2 x 0.575kN/m2 x 1.2 = 13.5kN

Option 2) Tied to steel columns at every lift level:

Load as Option 2)

1) Proof test values = 9.0kN x 1.25 FofS

= 11.25kN

2) Proof test values = 13.5kN x 1.25 FofS

= 16.9kN

Consider plan bracing:

Only required to check Option 2) spanning between column ties.

Load per frame = 1.8mx3.0mx0.575x1.2

= 3.73kN

Load on central bay braces = 3.73kN/2braces

= 1.9kN/brace

Load in bracing = 1.9kN/Sin 55 = 2.32kN

By inspection strut length and couplers will be acceptable

Load on outer bays = 3.73kN x 1.5 bays

= 5.6kN/brace

Load in bracing = 5.6kN/Sin 55 = 6.85kN

SWL of Class A couplers = 6.1kN

Therefore provide supplementary couplers either side of connection as wind can act in
two directions.

Consider braces with 45 degree angle

Worst case loading = 5.6kN/brace

Load in bracing = 5.6kN/Sin 45 = 7.92kN

Therefore provide supplementary couplers either side of connection as wind can act in
two directions.

Maximum length of brace = 3.1m

SWL of brace = 14.4kN Acceptable

Type and number of anchors to be used not detailed for access scaffold on design drawings.
Generally transoms to be fixed across 2no uprights therefore SWL of tie tube will be the
equivalent of 2no couplers SWL = 12.2kN

Therefore option 2 & 3 will require 2no tie tubes and will therfore require 2no anchor fixings.
Scaffold Contractor to install and test anchors in accordance with NASC document TG4: and
manufacturers guidance.
Scaffold Contrcator to ensure spacing of ties and edge distances are adhered to at all times.
