LESSON 17 – Describing Intervention

In your previous lesson, you have identified which research design you will use in writing, and
you have learned how to determine your sample and its size, and which instrument you will use.

While you need to learn about the data collection and analysis process in Module 6, the
guidelines should be in writing the research methodology and, where applicable, the intervention in
research.

Let us try to remember some of our lessons.

Intervention is something that comes between two things or something that makes a
difference in the course of something. The intervention may be applied to research techniques or
methodologies.

Researchers use a two-phase approach to study or assess intervention. First, they are
conducting a quantitative study. They then use a qualitative approach to explore the appropriateness
and acceptability of their interpretation of the quantitative results of their studies.

Researchers combine qualitative and quantitative approaches in a single intervention or

evaluation study, enabling them to respond to different types of intervention questions.

Example 1:
In Quantitative Statement of the Problem:
- What is the Leadership Style of the Respondents in terms of Policy-Making?
In Qualitative Statement of the Problem:
- How frequent do you compose a policy in one-term?
- How many policies do you make in one year?

Example 2:
In Quantitative Statement of the Problem:
- What is the effectiveness of punishment to the time-management of students late-comers?

Dr. Rodelio M. Alba PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2
Author Learning Module #6
In Qualitative Statement of the Problem:
- Do you have time schedule when going to school?
- What do you think of the imposition of punishment to student who always comes late to classes?

Let’s try this:

Going back to your Module 3 (Lesson 9), use one of your Statement of the Problem
and compose a Qualitative question/s for it.

Quantitative Statement of the Problem

Qualitative Statement of the Problem

You do the intervention if it is only applicable to your research, especially if you need
additional interpretation of your data. However, in the next semester, your subject in Inquiries,
Investigation, and Immersion will require you to submit and defend a research paper, whether
quantitative or qualitative or a combination of both. You and your subject teacher are going to decide.

LESSON 18 – Data Collection Procedure

Dr. Rodelio M. Alba PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2
Author Learning Module #6
The data collection are as follows. The interview is conducted by the researcher and the
respondents verbally exchanging questions and answers. It can be done either directly or by phone
or mobile phone. The questionnaire shall be made available to the interviewees in a set of research
questions. Questionnaire may be submitted in printed form or sent to the respondents for a wider
range of coverage via email or other technology. While the document is data that researchers may
use previously collected and processed. Observation is made of the current condition and
documented through the visual inspection of the researcher. Finally, the experiment consists of data
obtained by the researcher through the experimental process.
Based on the above illustration, the data collected is categorized into primary and
secondary data. The data collected from your experiment, observation, interviews and
questionnaire are the primary data in which you have raw and personal knowledge or first-hand
information; while secondary data are data collected by any reliable institution, such as government
agencies (Social Security System, Philippine Statistics Authority, Department of Health, Department
of Education).
You may decide how to obtain the data after specifying the type of data provided and the
location of the study. Are you going to interview people? Are you going to receive data from
companies? Or would you get the answers through the questionnaire?

Let’s try this:

Search the following organizations, and look for the functions or

services they offered and its website

ORGANIZATIONS SERVICES/FUNCTIONS WEBSITE

Inter-Agency Task Force

(IATF)

OCTA Research

World Health Organization

Department of Finance

Food and Drug

Administration (FDA)

As a researcher, in the following research subject stated below, you must define and
provide the variables. Verify the appropriate variables and/or
provide and explain why these are the required variables?

1. A student is looking for the effectiveness of the anti-bacterial property of Calamansi juice.
Determine the variables needed to be included in the study, and explain the reason.

_____ Calamansi _____ Price ______ Others: Specify__________

2. A researcher is fascinated with imposition of punishment as a discipline to students who do not

join their online classes. Equate and verify the variables needed in the study, and explain why.

You have been learning the process of data collection and how to determine with ease of
your sample size or respondents. Now with that mastery, you could take it as a criterion in writing
your research methodology.

LESSON 19 – Presenting Written Research Methodology

One of the critical aspects of the study is the research methodology. The method you used,
the validity and the reliability of your study must be described here. Using your prior knowledge and
the lessons we discussed from Modules 1 to 5, you have to place your research method. Take note,
it should be written in the past tense. In case you are required to submit a research proposal, you
have to write it in the present and future tense.

In your previous lesson, an instrument is a general term that you will use in measurement,
such as the survey, questionnaire, interview, etc. (Research Rundowns, 2020)

Get a copy of the research you have borrowed from your friend or the previous 12th grade
and check if you can write your research methodology.
The detailed steps are as follows:

STEP A
Explain your Methodological Approach
What was your Research Problem?
Describe characteristics
Does it…. Gain more understanding
Cause-and-effect relationship
What was your Needed Data?

Quantitative Qualitative
-express in numbers -express in words

do you have primary data? do you have secondary data?

STEP B
Describe Methods of Data Collection

What to include?

-the sample method or criteria

-the tools, procedures & materials
-the variables you measured
“In this step, you have to identify what type of questions were asked; where/when/how the
survey was conducted; describe the sampling method you used, the sample size and the
response rate; lastly, it should be written in past tense.”

STEP C
Describe Data Analysis
How you processed and analyzed the data?
Quantitative Qualitative
-Data preparation -Language

- Software - Images

-Statistical methods -Interpretations

-Themes

-Patterns

STEP D
Evaluate & Justify your Methodological Choices
Explain your Methodology

why you chose these particular methods

why other methods were not suitable for your objectives

how this approach contributes new knowledge

SCAFFOLD #5
This section will serve as your record of accomplishments.
Make a copy of this and use it to track your progress.
You will be required to submit your individual research report at the conclusion of the
semester.
“Draft your research methodology using the various steps mentioned above.”
You are doing great! Only two additional modules to follow and you can now submit your
research proposal, can’t you? If you can’t, then you should be thinking of going back to your Modules
1 to 5, because all lessons are interlinked and scaffolded, you must grasp the first part carefully
before going to another lesson.
