LE V EL 1 – RE A DING WORK SHEE T: Business

READING
Read the text about starting a new business. What is a good idea for starting your own business?

Love What You Do

Is it possible to make money from your hobby? Aubrey
Wilson says it is. She’s a business advisor. She helps
small businesses grow.
“Start with a question. What do I like doing?” Aubrey
says. “It’s important you enjoy it because a business
becomes your life. In a small business, you often work
long hours! Look at what other people do. Go online
and find people who make money from your hobby.
How do they do it? Don’t copy them, but get good
ideas. Next, plan your own business. Decide what you
need. Perhaps your hobby is video gaming—you need
an online channel so people can watch you play, and
you make money from ads. Or perhaps you like going to concerts. How about a business that plans trips to concerts?
You give people a great day out and make money at the same time. There is always a way to start a business from
your hobby. You need to find it and then work hard.”

READING
Read the text about planning a music event. What do you need to do or plan for a musical festival?

Listen to the Music!

Many large and small music festivals happen all over the world at different times of the
year. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world buy tickets for the South
by Southwest (SXSW) music festival. SXSW is a music festival in Austin, Texas. People
travel to Texas for one week in March and they can see over two thousand bands.
There are a few things you need to think about before planning an event like this.
It’s important to choose the right place for the event. Perhaps it’s a stadium for a large
concert. For a small event, think about using a theater. You also need to contact people at
City Hall. Music events are often very loud! In many places, there are rules about noise.
You need to decide on music and musicians. It’s good to choose one or two well-

READING
Read the text about free-time activities. What hobbies are healthy for you?

Healthy Hobbies
Many people today want a healthy
hobby—an activity they enjoy and that also
makes them feel good. Some hobbies are
good for your body. A good example of this
is dancing. When you dance, you exercise
your body. That’s good for your heart. You
also relax and spend time with friends.
After a long day at work, that can make you
feel good.
Other healthy hobbies are good for your
brain. You can learn to play a musical
instrument, such as the piano, at any age.
When you learn something new, your brain
works in a new way, which is healthy for
it. Having a pet, gardening, and traveling
are also healthy hobbies that some people
enjoy. Cooking is a healthy hobby that is
good for your body and your brain. There
are three good things about learning to
cook. First, you think about what you eat.
You learn what foods are good and bad for
you. This helps you choose food to make
you healthy and strong. Second, when you want to change your size, cooking healthy food is a good way to do it. And third,
you feel good when you cook for friends. When you cook healthy foods, your body feels good. When you cook for your
friends, you feel good.
