Question 2
Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a)- (j)
The world today would be a very different place if not for our scientists. Their ideas, research,
experiments and books have changed the way we live. They have also given us answers to many
questions we once thought could not be answered. Scientists such as Louis Pasteur, Galileo and
Thomas Edison have contributed a great deal of knowledge to the world of science. French chemist
Louis Pasteur helped us understand that many diseases are caused by germs. This meant that once we
knew how these germs live and passed from person to person, we knew how to prevent some diseases.
Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb made it possible for us to work at night and in dark places.
Italian scientist Galileo invented the telescope. His observations through the telescope not only led to the
discovery of Jupiter and three of Jupiter’s largest satellites, but also strongly influenced the development
of the field of astronomy and space research and exploration.

Question 4
Read the article below.
Did you know the kitchen can be a dangerous place if you are not careful? You can
keep your kitchen safe by following these tips. First, make sure all the wires, cords and
plugs on your appliances are not frayed. The plugs should have 3-prong grounded
connections. This would include toasters, blenders, microwave ovens, cake mixers, coffee
makers and other electrical appliances. You should also make sure that the blender is
unplugged and switched off before touching the blades.
When you have pots and pans cooking on the stove, do not leave them unattended.
Also, avoid wearing inappropriate clothing such as loose sleeves and sweaters while
cooking. Make sure to keep dish towels, pot holders and oven mitts away from the stove.
Keep matches and lighters in places where children cannot easily reach them. It is also good
to keep a fire extinguisher in or near a kitchen. However, it should not be kept too close to
the stove.
When cutting things with a knife, always cut facing away from your body, as it can slip
and injure you. Furthermore, do not try to catch the knife as it falls. It is better for it to hit
the floor than to cut your hand.
Make sure to clean up spills immediately as wet floors are slippery. Keep the kitchen
floor clear of toys and other items. Finally, you should put a childproof lock not only on the
medicines or detergent cabinets but also on your oven.
