Intake Structure – Waterproofing Works

1. Introduction
The purpose of this procedure is to outline the execution of the waterproofing works in
respect to Hydro Agricultural Development of South Lebanon Irrigation and Water Supply
Scheme CONVEYOR 800 Project – Contract Section 02 - Fixed.

This guide will provide the clear steps undertaken to complete the activities required for
waterproofing works at the Intake Structure in a safe, systematic and efficient manner in
compliance to the statutory and environmental requirements.

2. Scope
The procedure will include the tasks needed for repairing defected surfaces such as
honeycombed and porous concrete, cracks, cavities produced by form ties, construction
joints, etc. from the inside of the Yohmour Tunnel Connection and Surge Shaft at the Intake
Structure.

3. Materials
The different materials used in the repairing and waterproofing works are listed below:
 Betofix A40 Grout: BAUER BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES
 Betofix B70 Grout: BAUER BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES
 Belmix BM6 Fiber: BELGIAN FIBERS
 Kimitech Elastofix: KIMIA S.P.A
 Betonfix 300: KIMIA S.P.A
 Aquasil Flex: BAUER BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES

Datasheets for all of the above mentioned materials are provided in Annex I of this method
statement.

4. Time Schedule
Waterproofing and concrete repair activities for the Yohmour Tunnel Connection and Surge
Shaft at the Intake Structure will start on Monday, 16 th of July 2018. Approximately, a period

of 7 to 10 working days is required for finishing all the tasks and activities mentioned in this
method statement.

5. Services

5.1 Lighting
Contractor will provide the necessary lighting equipment to ensure appropriate lighting
inside the Yohmour Tunnel Connection. Additionally, worker will be equipped with
headlamp.

5.2 Equipment
Work equipment such as scaffolds, generator and tools (Grinder, mixer, concrete trowel,
brush, sponge, etc.) shall be provided and used according to the tasks and identified risks.

6. Health and Safety Requirements

Outlined below are some simple suggestions, prevention, and common sense precautions
considered by supervisors to ensure a healthy and safe workplace along with the Health,
Safety and Environment Plan provided at site to ensure smooth running of works in safe
manner:
1. Ensure that all safety precautions and recommendations outlined in the Risk
Assessments have been applied.
2. Make sure that:

 All personnel are safety inducted prior to site entry.

 Workers are trained and competent in their duties.
 All tools and equipment are in safe and good conditions.

3. Provide Frist Aide Facility on working site in case of minor injury treatment.
4. Arrange for all personnel the pertinent Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
including safety helmet, waterproof boots, full cover goggles, alkali resistant gloves.

7. Responsibilities
The construction manager is responsible in ensuring the implementation of construction
procedure and method statement, supervising the work and reporting the progress of work
to the planning engineer.

The site manager is responsible for induction, briefing and advising of all personnel and site
visitors.

The QA / QC engineer is responsible in monitoring the execution and performance of the

works in relation to this method statement, approved drawings and technical specifications.

The site engineer is responsible for organizing all the works on site in a safe manner,
ensuring it is in accordance with the schedule and the construction drawing. He must also
assure the method statement procedure is followed and must notify the consultant for
inspection.

The safety officer is responsible in ensuring that all activities are carried out safely at site,
establishing the site safety plan, conducting continuous safety inspection and stopping any
unsafe work.

The labor is responsible to properly wear the protective equipment provided and obey all
the safety rules. He must also perform the work as described in the method statement.

8. Methodology

8.1 Prior Activities

1. Make sure that material is sealed with labels indicating the manufacturer name, trade
mark, date of manufacture and expiry.
2. Store the material in a safe storage with shade and/or at the area out of direct
sunlight.
3. Inspect the concrete from the inside of the Yohmour Tunnel Connection and Surge
Shaft and locate any defects such as honeycombed and porous concrete, cracks,
cavities produced by form ties and construction joint defects.
4. Prepare scaffolds for reaching high defected locations all around the Surge Shaft.

8.2 Surface Preparation

1. Thoroughly clean the defected surface from segregated, cracked and loose particles.
2. Cut out fully to sound concrete until a homogeneous substrate has been reached.
3. Saw cut to a depth of 5 to 10 mm around the perimeter of the repair to avoid edges.
4. Clean defected tie road holes and remove all dust by brush.
5. Remove oil, grease and paints by using rug cloth and paint scraper respectively.
6. Use water and/or compressed air to completely remove dust, dirt, grease or any
material which may impair adhesion.

7. Ensure a dry surface where “Betonfix 300” or “Aquasil Flex” is to be applied, whereas,
where “Betofix A40” or “Betofix B70” is to be applied, wet the surface with clean
water.

8.3 Products Application

The procedure for repairing segregation and defected tie rod holes will be the same in both
the Yohmour Tunnel Connection and the Surge Shaft, however, different materials and layers
will be applied at the construction joints in the Yohmour Tunnel Connection and the Surge
Shaft.

The procedure and products applied for repairing segregation and defected tie rod holes, at
construction joints in the Surge Shaft and at construction joints in the Yohmour Tunnel
Connection are described herein:

8.3.1 Segregation and Defected Tie Rod Holes

After removing loose particles and cleaning in the same procedure mentioned above, special
grouting mixture will be applied depending on the depth of the grout to be filled.

For layers of less than 3cm thick, grouting mixture comprising “Betofix A40” will be used, for
layers up to 6cm thick, the mixture will comprise “Betofix B70” and for layers exceeding 6cm
thick, multiple layers of 6cm maximum thick will be applied.

The grouting mixture is composed of one bag “Betofix A40” or “Betofix B70”, 3.65-4.15 liter
of clean water, 0.35 liter of “Elastofix” and 50 grams of “Belmix BM6 Fiber”, where it’s mixing
and application will be as described in the “Betofix A40” or “Betofix B70” datasheets
included in Annex I of this method statement.

8.3.2 Construction Joints at Surge Shaft

Construction joints between the different lifts of the Surge Shaft wall must be cut reaching
sound concrete as described above, followed by grouting these joints in the same procedure
used for repairing segregation.

Three layers of “Betonfix 300” is to be applied, followed by one layer of “Aquasil Flex”.

“Betonfix 300” must be applied as described in the “Betonfix 300” datasheet included in
Annex I of this method statement.

Before applying the “Aquasil Flex”, the edges of the construction joints must be marked using
paper tape, with an offset of 10 cm from both sides of the joints and then “Aquasil Flex” is to

be applied as described in the “Aquasil Flex” datasheet included in Annex I of this method
statement.

8.3.3 Construction Joints at Yohmour Tunnel Connection

One layer of “Aquasil Flex” is to be applied on the construction joints between the foundation
and the walls and between the cover slab and the walls of the Yohmour Tunnel Connection.

The edges of the construction joints must be marked using paper tape, with an offset of 25
cm from both sides and then “Aquasil Flex” is to be applied as described in the “Aquasil Flex”
datasheet included in Annex I of this method statement.

9. Document References
Works shall be executed as per section 4, Clause 4.2.6 “Remedial Work to Defective Surfaces”
of the technical Specification – Volume 2.2, along with the methods and procedures
mentioned in the datasheets of each material used (Material’s datasheets are included in
Annex I of this method statement).
