Thank you for your letter dated February 8, 2022, regarding Tesla’s Autopilot and
Full Self-Driving capability features. We appreciate the opportunity to provide
additional information regarding Tesla’s commitment to safety.
Core to Tesla’s mission is our desire to design and produce the safest vehicles in
the world. Tesla’s vehicles combine powerful onboard technology with an all-electric
powertrain to help our drivers maximize their driving potential and keep themselves
and other road users safe. Making our vehicles safer is foundational to our company
culture and how we innovate new technologies. From conception to launch, Tesla's
software and homologation teams certify our products through a comprehensive
safety validation review and rigorous internal development process to make certain
that our technologies are safe. It is only after Tesla achieves a critical level of
confidence that we then roll out our products to customers.
At Tesla, we constantly seek to enhance our customers’ safety, as well as the safety
of other road users. Each Tesla vehicle is carefully designed with a standard suite of
active safety features. We also integrate core driver monitoring requirements, such
as torque-based hands-on-wheel detection, in all models to help ensure that our
drivers remain attentive when using Autopilot and FSD Capability. Furthermore,
beginning in May 2021, on Model 3 and Y vehicles equipped with Tesla Vision, our
camera-based Autopilot system, the interior cabin camera is available to detect
driver inattentiveness and provide audible alerts when Autopilot is engaged.
Thank you for your leadership and commitment to traffic safety, a goal which is
central to our company. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact
Hasan Nazar at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Rohan Patel
