Hey there!

“Hey everyone! Whipped up a quick guide

for everyone who want's to learn and

understand the world of finance! I hope you

learn and grow your knowledge with this.”

Hailing from a family of entrepreneurs, start-ups weren’t a new

world for this 28-year old. However, he went the traditional way with

his education and started out as an investment banker after

completing his Masters from Strathclyde University.

Shashank, who has been a Tedx speaker at IIT Bangalore, decided

to eventually be an entrepreneur after he met Varun Mayya and

Abhinav Arora and thus Avalon Labs was born. After scaling Avalon

Labs to newer heights, they decided to venture into the ed-tech

space and built Avalon Meta.

Owing to Shashank’s experience as an investment banker, Meta

raised $420,000 even before its official launch and has built a

community called ‘The Avalon Army’ of over a whopping 2 lakh

people who band together to help each other.

Hey there!

Shashank's deep-found passion for finances and how it works for

start-ups has made him the perfect CFO for Avalon Meta. With close

to 100k followers on Instagram, Shashank is one of the mentors on

the influencer driven platform and teaches all things finance. Looking

at the current popularity of this ed-tech start-up, he’s only getting

started. He also aims at educating and spreading awareness about

the importance of savings and basic workings of finance amongst

the youth of India, something that we are seldom taught in the

traditional institutions to begin with.

“My Aim is quite simple - improving the financial literacy of

our country. I am a firm believer that education and

knowledge is important for everyone! Keeping that aim in

mind, a portion of my youtube revenues are donated towards

sponsoring a child's education.”

Here’s are two quick videos on my journey so far. I hope it inspires

you to keep pushing and learning.

How to read this guide?
The first and most important thing to remember is to NOT READ THE
GUIDE. Huh?

The correct way -

READ. STOP. DO. READ. REDO. REDO. SHARE. REDO. READ.

Got my point? Don’t just read the guide, practice and explore along
side. Practice daily. Do daily. Share your learnings with your friends
and explore finance together. The journey alone is going to be a little
difficult and slow. Challenge them and yourself everyday. Grow
together if you want to grow at all.

Learning by only reading

growth

What more?
Each section in the book answers a question. It contains all the
things I’ve learned and practised myself in the world of finance, but
simplified so that it’s much easier to understand. All the content is
also based on what my audience requests and wants to learn more
about. Feel free to ping me on a social media platform!
How to read this guide?

Now, in order to make your exploration easier, I added interactive

elements in almost every page! Interactive how? The components
listed below are clickable, redirecting you to a video explanation, my

I believe in compounding; the eighth wonder of the world. My aim
right now is to grow my money. That’s the first step to deciding how
to invest your money. What’s your aim? I don’t take loans and EMIs in
order to maximize my compounding. Everyone’s aim is different.

What do you want in the future? What are you working towards?

Starting early vs late

So why am I so focused on you starting your investments as soon as

possible? Compounding interest is a powerful trick to grow your
money but it only works with time. It doesn’t matter how much you
start with, you just have to start early. Compounding kicks in after
15-20 years. Do you want to be rich when you’re 40 or 60?

Investing your first paycheck

Once you have a clear defined aim, the next step to measure your
income and expenses. Whatever gets measures, it will get
managed. Simple. “What all expenses do you have? Do you a Netflix
subscription? Do you order regularly on Swiggy? How much are you
getting everyday into your account?” Need to measure everything
and create an excel sheet to help you.

You’ll only understand how much you can save once you have know
how much you spend and how much your earn.

Then comes allocation. I good rule I follow is 20-30-50 rule.

Savings Needs
Wants

20% 50% 30%

An important part of this rule is to SAVE FIRST > SPEND LATER

Once you have your savings out of your bank account, you’ll have
spend judiciously without worrying of spending too much. Otherwise
you’ll feel you have too much money and give out parties to your
friends “Aaj tera bhai ki party” (“It’s my party today”)

What’s next?

Now, you have the money to save, where do you start?

More on the 20-30-50 rule

Biggest mistakes

Spend first, save nothing

First impulse when you get your first salary is maybe you want to travel,
get a new phone and treat your friends. But, that is how I ended up being
broke at the end of every month.

Bought a credit card

Getting a credit card isn't wrong, but the limit of my card was double my
salary. The institutions want you to spend more but once you go in debt,
it's really difficult to come out. The interest on a credit card, if you're not
able to play back the loan, is phenomenally high.

Investing for quick money

Your friends, who got lucky once, will come to you with a rich quick
scheme and if you are not smart and careful, you'll jump in without any
idea what is happening. If it was that easy for everyone to make money,
then wouldn't everyone be rich? Why is everyone working so hard in life?

Getting a life insurance

It's not an investment. If you're the sole bread-winner in your home then it
makes sense for you to get a life insurance. However, if you're young and
your parents are well settled, then you don't need these returns. Until
someone depends on you, it's better to invest and grow your money.

Psychology of stock market
Stock market is place for you to grow your money not earn money
quickly. Always remember, you're not here to make quick money,
you're here to play a long-term wealth creation game.

Understand yourself
I save because I want mental peace. I'm not here to save to go on an
luxurious trip, but to have a solid safe backup when I go down in life. Life is
full of ups-and-downs, and it's okay. Save in good times so you can float
in bad times. You can have different objectives and that's completely
okay. Before getting started answer this! What's your goal?

Don't let your emotions control your game

Is this 3-4 days of panic really worth it? In the long term, 2-3 years you'll
make much more money if you don't let your emotions get to you,
assuming where you've invested is fundamentally strong and you've
done your research.

What about ETFs?

ETFs are Exchange Traded Funds. They are created to replicate an

index. For example, if you want to invest in NIFTY50, you can’t
actually buy them. One option is to buy all 50 stocks separately but
that’ll will become expensive. So instead, you can invest in an ETF
which replicates NIFTY50 and gives you the same returns.

Dividend strategy

When a company makes a lot of money, they want to keep their

shareholders happy and so they distribute part of the profits to the
shareholders as dividends. For growth companies, the excess
money is put back in the company instead of dividends which is
better for investors as well because they want the company to grow.

PRO TIP

Who is dividend strategy for?

For your parents or grandparents who have a large amount of money, aren’t working
and need some passive income. This way the capital also appreciates in value and you
get good dividends; beats inflation and fixed deposit rates.

Mutual funds

Investors (like me and you) pool our money and give it to a person

(fund manager) to invest, on your behalf. You don’t have to delve

into the finance world or keep up with the stock market. The fund

manager takes care of all that, gives your good returns and in

return, takes a small fee.

Active funds are constantly overseen by the fund managers and they

Passive funds are not constantly managed. They don’t require
rebalancing. Eg, Index funds.

ELSS Funds
Equity Linked Saving Schemes. It’s type of a mutual fund that you can

Index funds
A type of a mutual fund that invest in stocks that imitate the stock
market. You’ve heard of NIFTY and SENSEX right? Now you can’t
directly invest in them. One option is to buy each stock in the indexes
individually but you’ll need a lot of capital to invest. So another
option is you give your small amount to the mutual fund and they
pool all the money and invest in the stocks in NIFTY/SENSEX.

Goal of the index fund

Unlike actively managed mutual funds which aim to beat the returns of
the market, the index fund aims to match the returns of the indexes like
NIFTY, SENSEX as close as possible.

PRO TIP
The longer the time that you hold the index fund, better the returns since market works
best in the long term!

It isn’t as expensive as you think

There’s physical gold which has 2 problems - expensive and you’ll be
worried where to store it. A better option is to buy digital gold. You can
buy with any small amount (eg, rs.100), it’s stored safely, it’s pure and you
can either sell it anytime or get it delivered physically or even gift it.

There’s another way to buy gold - Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB). They
are issued by the RBI. You get 2-2.5% interest every year and value
of bond also increases over time. At maturity, you get cash, not gold.
PRO TIP
What I usually do is that I buy digital gold everytime I get a cashback (from anywhere)
but with a twist - I multiply it by 100 and buy that much worth of gold.

Crypto 101
Getting started
It all started in 2008, when Bitcoin was created as a decentralized
currency; meaning no one had control over it, not the RBI, no middle
man. There’s only a sender and a receiver. All the transactions that
take place are stored in the form of blocks, which is called the
blockchain. Simple.

Soon came the idea of Ethereum

Using the blockchain technology, the creator introduced the concept of
smart contracts. Smart contracts are pre-defined rules that are carried
out in each transaction. For example, you want each payment to be split
between your 4 friends, so instead of you doing it manually, you can
create a contract which does that automatically.

It stands for decentralized finance. Traditionally, a centralized bank

exists that passes money from lenders to borrowers. The bank
