Julie Gandionco
1. Identify their “big idea” or main concept
Julie Gandionco, the owner of the Julie’s Bakeshop, main concept is to show how
strong she is as a woman with a role of a wife and a mother while taking all the
opportunities she can get in helping and providing her family needs by taking jobs and
businesses. When she had her successful business Julie’s Bakeshop, she and her family
manage their business together. It’s about her passion and her love for her family.

2. Discussed how they worked during the beginnings of the businesses, as well as during the
growth of their business.
Julie started by trying different kinds of jobs and businesses by also facing different
circumstances. She tried working with her husband as she was exposed to general
management and human resources on their farm and she also became a warehouseman as
she is in charge of the books of sales and inventory in Pepsi. Then as she went in Bohol
she put a sari-sari store and a sewing job that also became successful. His husband
resigned from his job in Pepsi then go back to the plantation however they lose it. So,
Julie started to find a job again which is to run a canteen and her bread that is always sold
out. The growth of Julie’s Bakeshop started when she was offered by a baker to create a
business together although she denies it first, she still proceeded until the business
succeeded with the help of her whole family in managing it in opening a branch until
starting to do a franchise.
3. Identify characteristics or traits that they exhibited.
Julie Gandionco is a very hardworking woman and a mother. She is also very
passionate about all her jobs and businesses as she tried different works in different
places also. She has the characteristics of seeing the changes as an opportunity or an
opportunity-seeker, she keeps taking all the opportunities she has despite all of the
problems her family faced.

Socorro Ramos
1. Identify their big idea or main concept
Socorro Ramos as known as Nanay Coring’s main concept is to stand up and build a
book store despite all the challenges they had with her husband, they keep striving and
begin again where they started, her family-owned shopkeepers before but failed as it was
thrown out and they become poor. They faced different kinds of problems but they still
work hard and begin once again.
2. Discuss how they worked during the beginning of their businesses, as well as during the
growth of their businesses.
Nanay Coring is from a poor family so she worked for her brother-in-law as she also
met his husband named Jose Ramos who owned Goodwill Book Store in 1940 but since
they can’t afford help, she is worked as the manager, cashier, purchaser, saleslady,
janitor, and helper. When the Japanese came their business was burned down so, for
alternative jobs, she sells candles. After these, schools are now open so they started once
again by selling books, papers, etc., as in that time there have a few competitors. Then
their store was damaged once again by a strong typhoon so they worked hard once again
rebuilding their business. In 1950s the growth of their business started when Socorro
produces a line of greeting cards and postcards using Philippines views and artwork and
it succeeded until they had the National Bookstore and they sell affordable books.

3. Identify characteristics or traits that they exhibited


Socorro Ramos is humble, hardworking, tenacity despite failures, determined, and
flexible for her business. Despite of all the challenges she faced she still succeeded. Even
though they failed plenty of times she keeps striving and keeps going on. She is so
determined for her business and she will do anything for her business to succeed. Even
though she is now wealthy she stays humble and she believed that there is always
something new to learn and to always remember where you started.

Henry Sy
1. Identify the big idea or main concept
Henry Sy is the owner of SM his main concept is to keep a buy and sell business or
retail business where his shoe store became a vast conglomerate of businesses in retail,
real estate, banking, hospitality, and others. He started a small shoe store into the largest
number of malls in the Philippines and outside our country.

2. Discussed how they worked during the beginning of their businesses, as well as during
the growth of their businesses.
Henry Sy begins when he was young helping his father to survive their sari-sari store
but burned down at the end of World War II. Then, he started a business Shoe Mart with
three branches selling American shoes as well as new ideas in merchandising like selling
fashion accessories and leather goods. However, his manufacturers can’t provide his
demands so he tried selling clothes and he learned how to deal with suppliers, customers,
and to her employees to grow their business. There, his shoe mart became a department
store selling different things. When he was constructing his first small despite the threat
of the civil war, he still pushed through and proceed, and then he succeeds until he did a
lot of franchising and him being one of the billionaires in the Philippines.
3. Identify characteristics or traits that they exhibited
Henry Sy is a very hardworking man, risk-taker, passionate, innovative, and goal
oriented. As he is already knowledgeable in business as he helped his father to survive
their sari-sari store when he started a business, he already knew what to do after the
challenges and problems he faced. Like when he still proceeded in constructing a mall
despite the threat of a civil war. Then he never knew that it was the beginning of his
successful life in starting franchising all over the Philippines and to another countries.
