1 Laboratory work №2.

Computation of metrics of performance of

computer system: speed, efficiency, energy expenses, Amdal’s law, CPU time

Goal of the laboratory work is to gain practical skills in calculating the

performance and efficiency of PC devices.

The theoretical information

Evaluation of computer efficiency is usually performed by special programs, the
so-called bench mockups. One such program is the Passmark Performance
Test. This utility contains a complete set of all required functions: processor
testing, 2D and 3D graphics, disks, memory and other components. Using
the Passmark Performance Test, you can not only test computer devices, but also see
the results in the form of histograms. The export of test results in tabular form in
HTML format or in text form to TXT filesis supported .
MS Windows has a built-in performance monitor that allows you to view and
evaluate the operation of almost all the hardware components of a computer system.
To do this, use the menu item Administration - System Monitor. A dialog box will
appear (Figure 2.1).

Figure 2.1 - The System Monitor dialog box

The system monitor window displays the standard, most used performance
indicators with an indication of the physical device to which they belong - "Page
Exchange" (Memory), "Average Disk Queue Length" (Physical Disk), "% CPU
Utilization" (Processor). These are the 3 most important indicators of system
performance, allowing you to evaluate the workload and performance of the main
hardware components - processor, memory and disk.
By analyzing the performance of various devices, their load over time when
the computer is running, when you start the most frequently used programs, you can
evaluate which device is the least efficient and, therefore, slows down the system most.
Analysis and evaluation of the system monitor data allows you to make the right
decision to improve system performance.
The Windows Experience Index (WEI) is an assessment of the Windows system
itself of the basic characteristics of the computer on which the OS is installed.
Key Features:
− processor
− RAM
− Graphics
− Graphics for games
− Disk subsystem.
If your computer is slow, it may be infected with a virus or spyware. This
situation is less common than other problems, but it should also be taken into account.
Scanning your computer with anti-spyware and anti-virus programs will help to avoid
excessive worries about its condition.
If you are trying to optimize your program or measure efficiency, it is very
useful to know how much time the processor or CPU time it used at any given point.
CPU time is different from the actual clock, because it does not include all the time
spent waiting for I / O or when some other process is running. The processor time is
represented by the data type, and is given as a series of time pulses relative to an
arbitrary base time, marking the beginning of a single program call.
To determine the processor installed in the system; displaying information about
it, as well as about other components — the motherboard, memory, and video card —
the CPU-Z program is intended . E is a free program, which became for a long time a
de facto standard . Developer's site: https://www.cpuid.com
The program is able to determine the following hardware and its characteristics:
CPU
Name and Model
Kernel stepping and manufacturing process
Casing
Core voltage
Internal and external frequencies, processor multiplier
Supported instruction sets
Cache info
Motherboard
Manufacturer, model and revision
BIOS manufacturer, BIOS date and version
Chipset (north and south bridges) and sensor
GUI
Memory
Frequency and Timing
Specifications of the modules recorded in SPD - manufacturer, serial number,
timing table
System
Windows and DirectX version
Programs comes in two versions : requiring installation and not requiring. The
most popular version without installation, because there is no need to store extra
libraries in memory. On the other hand, it is stated that the installation version loads
slightly faster and is more stable.

Tasks to perform
Task 1
- Assess the performance of computer devices using tools built into Windows
(similar features of other operating systems).
- Open the resource monitor (Figure 2.2), analyze the CPU, memory and disk
drives .
- Formulate recommendations for improving computer performance.

Task 2
Install the CPU-Z program (similar programs are possible) on your computer
and determine the technical characteristics:
- central processor;
- video cards;
- motherboard ;
- RAM.
Task 3
Briefly describe the essence of Amdahl’s law.
Report content
1. The results of the work.
2. Description of actions and conclusions on task 1.
3. The results of the analysis of the technical characteristics of the
computerusing the CPU-Z program (similar programs are possible).
