OBJETIVE

The purpose of this learning objective is to teach people the most relevant differences between wish
and hope which is very important in the English language.

For this learning object, three types of activities have been applied: Reading, Listening and exercises,
thus the people can practice their English.

MATERIAL

Wish

 When we want to express a wish/desire in English for a situation to be different to what it actually

is then it is very common to use the verb “ to wish”. This verb can be used in different tenses
depending on what we desire or desired to be different. Wish is most commonly used in
hypothetical (or imagined) situations:

I wish that I had a dog. (I don´t really have a dog, but if I did, I would be happy)

I wish you were here. (Unfortunately, you aren´t and I miss you)

 Sometimes wish is used in greeting and expressions of goodwill:

We wish you a “Merry Christmas”.

They wished him “happy Birthday”.

Wish me luck.

Hope

 We use hope to desire something good or positive in the future. “Hope” is often used to talk
about future events, situations, or actions. For a future meaning, it is paired with simple present
tense:

I hope my team wins the game.

I hope we see each other again.

 “Hope” can also be used to talk about something that recently happened and will be decided in
the future. In this case, it is paired with the simple past tense.

I hope you passed your test. (After the test, but before you know the outcome.)
I hope I got the job. (After the job interview, but before you know the outcome .)

 READING
I wish and Hope
I hope life treats your kind, and I hope you have all that you ever dreamed of, and I
wish you joy and happiness. But above all of this, I wish you love. (Dolly Parton). In
this sentence, we can see how good wishes towards another person and society
are part of good human feeling. For my part, I wish all of humanity to take into
account that the only thing we need to be happy is love. I hope everyone learns this
beautiful lesson. I wish that our ancestors learned to love, if they had, the world
really wouldn't be like this. I wish were a millionaire to help those most in need,
although at the moment I have no money or anything to give; I hope I can get a
good job to help a little in what is within my power. For the moment I can only offer
you my words and all my good intentions to make this world change. That is why I
wish for peace and for all of humanity to find love. I hope so.
Practices subjunctive Hope with a song "I Hope (Duet)" Lyrics

I, I hope she makes you smile

The way you made me smile

On the other end of a phone

In the middle of the highway driving alone.

Oh, baby, I, I hope you hear a song

That makes you sing along

And gets you thinking about her

Then the last several miles turns into a blur

Yeah.

I hope you both feel the sparks by the end of the drive

I hope you know she's the one by the end of the night

I hope you never ever felt more free

Tell your friends that you're so happy.

I hope she comes along and wrecks every one of your plans

I hope you spend your last dime to put a rock on her hand

I hope she's wilder than your wildest dreams

She's everything you're ever gonna need.

And then I hope she cheats

Like you did on me

And then I hope she cheats

Like you did on me.
