will continue to mark the path between East and West. It is our

—Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming

YMAA schools turn 30!

Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming established
Yang’s Martial Arts Association
on October 1, 1982. In January of
1984, YMAA Publication Center
was founded. It’s a great feeling to know that after all these years, the goals
of both schools and publishing are being achieved—to help advance the
quality and deep understanding of martial arts.
For publishing, the recruitment of skilled experts in martial arts, self-
defense, qigong, and healing has enriched our list and provided these
authors a global reach to do what they do best—educate and instruct.
For YMAA schools, the continuing success of the YMAA California Retreat
Center has allowed Dr. Yang and his students to immerse themselves in
long-term in-depth training that is being shared through seminars and
the strong relationships between
the many YMAA branch schools
worldwide.
Check us out online and in this
catalog. Join me in expressing
thanks to Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming
for getting YMAA started so many
years ago.

the raven’s
warrior
a novel
By Vincent Pratchett

If Death takes a man, it is called fate. When

Death leaves a man, it is called destiny.
Wounded in battle (900 ad), a near dead
Celtic warrior is taken by Viken raiders
and sold into a Baghdad slave market. He is
dragged farther east through the desert, into
the ‘Middle Kingdom,’ where he is bought
by a Taoist priest and his beautiful daughter.
apr 13 Hazy images of silk, herbs, needles, potions,
and steel can only lead to one conclusion: he
has been purchased by a wizard and his witch. Arkthar fears for his soul.
Death finds Arkthar’s predicament interesting. “I have heard the delirious
ramblings of countless dying minds. I am amused by yours.”
“Don’t be afraid, I won’t take you now. Your life sentence has just begun.”
Arkthar’s ‘owners’ become his teachers and then his companions. The priest
wizard and his witch daughter heal and teach Arkthar their Eastern ways of
medicine, science, war, and philosophy.
Under the watchful eye of Death this journey unfolds, as a slave becomes a
king, and new roots of Arthurian legend take hold.

Dirty ground
the tricky space
Between sport
and combat
By Kris Wilder and
Lawrence Kane

This book addresses an important

gap that exists in martial arts training.
The gap is the tricky space or the dirty
ground that lives between sport and
combat techniques—when you need
to control a person without severely
injuring him or her.
This dirty ground can reveal itself
when things get out of control; when
friends, family, or good Samaritans
are involved; when certain types of
muggings or robberies get physical.
You must understand that using the Iron Hammer Fist Punch you learned
may 12
in karate class will probably put your uncle in the hospital; make your
friend your enemy for life; or give the mugger, who only wanted your wal-
let, a chance to sue you for all you’re worth. You’ll probably get thrown in
jail for excessive force, too.
Understanding these three environments is vital. Martial art techniques
must be adapted to best fit the situation you find yourself in.
The authors analyze 30 fundamental strikes, kicks, and locks, and present
12 well-known sport competition forms modified for each of the three vi-
tal environments: SPORT, DIRTY GROUND, and COMBAT.

Black Belt poomsae
original Koryo
and Koryo
By Richard Chun and Doug Cook

According to the World Taekwondo Federa-

tion, there are over 90,000,000 taekwondo
black belt practitioners worldwide. Every first
degree black belt student is required to learn
Koryo, but few are familiar with the ancestral
formal exercise, ‘Original Koryo.’
Prearranged forms known as poomsae in tae-
kwondo, or as kata in karate, have represented
the primary method of transmitting martial
arts skills from teacher to student. As an em-
phasis on sport supplanted fighting prefer-
ences in taekwondo’s raison d'être, the Origi-
nal Koryo was modified in kind, evolving into
today’s well-known Koryo.
Written specifically for black belt students, this book is a scholarly attempt
to capture, transmit, and preserve as an inheritance, the historical treasures
and technical attributes inherent in Original Koryo and Koryo, as well as
the applications less obvious or even secretly encoded in these forms. All jUly 13
for the benefit of those seeking more than triumph in the ring or aerobic
fulfillment from their taekwondo training.
In summary, students will find:
• History and philosophy
• Technical elements for learning the basics
• Detailed instruction for learning Kukki Koryo
• Detailed instruction for learning Original Koryo
Over two hundred photographs, line-of-motion charts, stepping patterns,
and martial applications are provided throughout this in-depth instruc-
