Let’s get moving

There are many types of local transport, including buses, trains, and taxis. Transport helps us with our
daily needs, for example to get to school, work and the shops. We all need transport so improving local
transport systems is essential. Without transport systems, goods and services would not get to the
people that need them and some employment opportunities would not exist.

Having cheaper, faster forms of transport has made it possible for us to move around the world. Places
do not seem as far away as they used to. Fifty years ago, if you wanted to go to Australia from here, you
went by boat, which could take up to three weeks. Nowadays, it takes just 24 hours by plane. People
take more holidays overseas because of the availability of cheap flights and can visit friends and family
that have moved more easily. These are all positive consequences, but what about the negative effects
of improving transport systems?

Public Notice: New airport or a third runway?

There is a debate going on about whether building new airports and/or increasing the number of runways
at existing airports is a good thing. Opinion is divided. Here are some of the different perspectives.

Better to build a new airport.

This one is already too busy. Say no to a
third runway here and yes to a new
airport somewhere else.

Let us expand this airport by

building a third runway. It is essential
for tourism and business here.
Have your say! Say yes!
Say no to a third runway and no to a
new airport. What we have is already
enough for our needs.

The Debate Show

Do we need a third runway at this airport?

Sofia: There are many reasons in favour of a third runway – more reasons ‘for’ than ‘against’ it.
The runway will ease air traffic congestion because it will be big enough for the movement
of another 50 aircraft per hour. The number of passengers at the airport last year was
about 60 million. This is nearly three times more than its planned yearly capacity of
22 million. With the new runway, it is hoped that the airport will be able to accommodate
up to 100 million passengers per year.

Rafi: I think you mean more reasons ‘against’ it than ‘for’ it. What is going to happen to all the
people who live near the planned new runway? I heard that they would be getting a lot
of money for their houses, but people are not just motivated by money. Many have lived
here all their lives.

It is true that more people will be able to visit our country but this will mean more chaos
on the roads. We do not have enough hotels for all the holiday makers that come as it is!
It would be better to spend the money on improving our roads and building hotels for the
existing tourists. If we do not do these things first, I think fewer people will come anyway
and then we will not need a new runway.
