overcome her fear and to gain confidence, she got a stall in the marketplace, and will
never let his husband “touch” her.

Catholic, far exotic Mindanao, it emerges with tragic clarity. The sensuous blooming
of the lovely heroine is met with self flagellation by her contemporaneous villagers,
who see her as a model of purity. Her simultaneous death and climax have dark and
passionate undertones of medieval Catholicism and Eastern sensuality.
