1. If the sides of a landing slab of a dog-legged staircase are embedded into walls and the
slab spans along the direction of the flights, for designing of the slab, as per IS
456:2000, one of the following factors that need to be considered:

A. If the slab is embedded in the wall by more than 150 mm, a 100 mm strip may be
deducted from the loaded area
B. If the slab is embedded in the wall by more than 110 mm, a 150 mm strip may be
deducted from the loaded area
C. If the slab is embedded in the wall by less than 200 mm, a 100 mm strip may be
deducted from the loaded area
D. If the slab is embedded in the wall by more than 110 mm, a 75 mm strip may be
deducted from the loaded area

Solution:

As per the clause 33.2 of IS 456:2000, in page- 63, if the slab is embedded in the wall
by more than 110 mm, a 150 mm strip may be deducted from the loaded area.
Hence, ‘B’ is the correct choice.

2. As per IS 456:2000, in case of an open well staircase, which of the following statements
is true:
A. Spans with partly crossing at right angles, the load on areas common to any two such
spans may be taken as half of the actual load on the spans.

B. Spans with partly crossing at right angles, the load on areas common to any two such
spans may be taken as two third of the actual load on the spans.

C. Spans with partly crossing at right angles, the load on areas common to any two such
spans may be taken as one fourth of the actual load on the spans.

D. Spans with partly crossing at right angles, the load on areas common to any two such
spans may be taken as one and half of the actual load on the spans.
Solution:

Reference clause 33.2 of IS 456:2000, page 63.

5. A flight of a dog-legged staircase is consisted of total 11 nos. of risers. Height of each

riser is 150 mm and width of each tread is 250 mm. If the edges of the last steps of the
flight is supported by a beam spanning parallel to the risers, and the both beams have
width of 250 mm, the effective span of the stair would be:

A. 2750 mm
B. 3000 mm
C. 3500 mm
D. 2550 mm

Solution:

Total nos. of treads = 11-1 = 10

Going = 10*250 =2500 mm
Width of each beam, B = 250 mm
Hence, as par the clause 31.1 (a) of IS 456:2000, effective span of the staircase will be
= Going+0.5*B+0.5*B
= 2500+0.5*250+0.5*250
= 2500+125+125
= 2750 mm
Hence, ‘A’ is the correct choice.

6. A dog-legged staircase is consisted of steps with tread and riser depth as 250 mm and
150 mm respectively. In addition to that going depth of the steps, waist slab depth, and
floor finish thickness are 250 mm, 150 mm, and 20 mm respectively. If the unit weight
of concrete is 25 kN/m3 and that of floor finish is 23.5 kN/m3, the weight of each step
including waist slab would be equal to:

A. 4.503 kN/m per m width of step

B. 1.503 kN/m per m width of step
C. 6.718 kN/m per m width of step
D. 2.602 kN/m per m width of step

Solution:

(i) Tread depth of the step, T = 250 mm

(ii) Riser height of the step, R = 150 mm
(iii) Going depth of the step, G = 250 mm
(iv) Depth of waist slab, D = 150 mm
(v) Thickness of the floor finish, tf = 20 mm
(vi) Unit weight of concrete, γc = 25 kN/m3
(vii) Unit weight of floor finish, γf = 23.5 kN/m3
(viii) Length of each step along the waist slab, B = √R2 + T 2 = 291.55 mm

(ix) Weight of floor finish,

tf ×T×γf 0.02×0.250×23.5
Wff = = = 0.470 kN/m/m
G 0.250
(x) Weight waist slab,
D×B×γc 0.15×0.29155×25
Wws = = = 4.373 kN/m/m
G 0.250
(xi) Weight of each step without waist slab,
1 1
R×T×γc ×0.150×0.250×25
Wsws = 2 =2 = 1.875 kN/m/m
G 0.250

Weight of each step including the weight of waist slab and floor finish,
Ws = Wff + Wws + Wsws
= 0.470 + 4.373 + 1.875
= 6.718 kN/m/m
Hence, option ‘C’ is the correct answer.

7. A dog-legged staircase is consisted of steps with tread and rise depth as 250 mm and
150 mm respectively. In addition to that going depth of the steps, and waist slab depth
are 250 mm, and 150 mm respectively. If the unit weight of concrete is 25 kN/m3, the
weight of each step including waist slab would be equal to:

A. 6.248 kN/m per m width of step

B. 5.137 kN/m per m width of step
C. 7.235 kN/m per m width of step
D. 2.257 kN/m per m width of step

Solution:

(i) Tread depth of the step, T = 250 mm

(ii) Rise height of step, R = 150 mm
(iii) Going depth of the step, G = 250 mm
(iv) Depth of waist slab, D = 150 mm
(v) Thickness of the floor finish, tf = 20 mm
(vi) Unit weight of concrete, γc = 25 kN/m3
(vii) Unit weight of floor finish, γf = 23.5 kN/m3
(viii) Length of each step along the waist slab, B = √R2 + T 2 = 291.55 mm

(ix) Weight waist slab,

D×B×γc 0.15×0.29155×25
Wws = = = 4.373 kN/m/m
G 0.250
(x) Weight of each step without waist slab,
1 1
R×T×γc ×0.150×0.250×25
Wsws = 2 =2 = 1.875 kN/m/m
G 0.250

Weight of each step including the weight of waist slab and floor finish,
Ws = Wws + Wsws
= 4.373 + 1.875
= 6.248 kN/m/m
Hence, option ‘A’ is the correct answer.

8. A dog-legged staircase is consisted of steps with tread and riser depth as 250 mm and
150 mm respectively. Addition to that it has total 11 nos. of riser in a flight and a landing
slab at one side of its flights. Width of the landing slab is 1200 mm and it spans parallel
to the risers. What would be the effective span of the stair?

A. 3000 mm
B. 3100 mm
C. 4000 mm
D. 4500 mm

Solution:

(i) Tread depth of the step, T = 250 mm

(ii) Riser depth of the step, R = 150 mm
(iii) Width of the landing, BL = 1200 mm
(iv) Total nos. of riser in a flight = 11
(v) Total nos. of tread in a flight = 11-1 =10

As per IS 456:2000, clause: 33.1 (b), page-63

Effective span of the stair = Going + min (1000 mm and (1200/2 = 600 mm)).
= 10x250 + 600
= 2500+600
= 3100 mm
Hence, option ‘B’ is the correct answer.

9. A dog-legged staircase is consisted of steps with tread and riser depth as 180 mm and
130 mm respectively. Addition to that it has a landing slab one side of its flights and its
Width is 1200 mm. If the floor to floor height of a building is 2860 mm, then total
number of tread (T) and riser (R) in the staircase will be:

A. R = 20, T = 18
B. R = 18, T = 16
C. R = 16, T = 14
D. R = 22, T = 20

Solution:
Floor to floor height, H = 2860 mm
Depth of a riser = 130
Total nos. of riser = 2860/130 = 22
Total nos. of tread = 22-2 = 20 (Since two flights, so R-2)
Hence, option ‘D’ is the correct answer.

B. Handrail 2. Bottom of steps
C. Finial 3. Newel
D. Nose 4. Baluster

A. A-1, B-2, C-4, D-3

B. A-2, B-4, C-3, D-1
C. A-2, B-1, C-4, D-3
D. A-4, B-2, C-3, D-1

Solution:
Option ‘B’ is the correct answer.
