FM Global Data Sheets 2-0 and 8-9

What brings me here today?

So Many Sprinklers!
And the installation guidelines for
sprinklers reads like:
Otherwise known as:

Everyone’s favorite novels

In 2009, FM Global is combining Data
Sheets (DS) 2-2, 2-7 and 2-8N into a new
DS 2-0 so that it hopefully reads like:
The biggest changes that DS 2-0 will
incorporate when compared to DS 2-2, 2-7
or 2-8N are:
• Eliminating the terms Control Mode Density
Area (CMDA), Control Mode Specific
Application (CMSA) and Suppression Mode
sprinklers
• Using the terms Storage, Non-Storage and
Special Protection sprinklers
What are these sprinklers?
• Storage Sprinkler: Used for storage and other
high challenge type occupancy hazards
• Non-Storage Sprinkler: Used for occupancy
hazards with moderate to low challenge fire
hazards
• Special Protection Sprinkler: Used for special
hazards such as the protection of the inside of
ducts, cooling towers, corrosive environments,
etc.
What benefit do these new terms have?
• The acceptable application of the sprinkler is
better understood
• It defines a sprinkler based on its intended
use (storage or non-storage) as opposed to its
assumed performance (suppression or
control)
• Allows for a single and consistent method to
design all sprinkler systems (number of
sprinklers at a given operating pressure)
What will Data Sheet 2-0 be like?
• The installation guidelines for Non-Storage
sprinklers will be very similar to the
installation guidelines presently given for
Control Mode Density Area Sprinklers
• The installation guidelines for Storage
sprinklers will be very similar to the
installation guidelines presently given for
Suppression Mode sprinklers, including those
regarding obstructions
Will Data Sheet 2-0 demonstrate how to
hydraulically calculate a sprinkler system?
• The guidelines for hydraulic analysis of an
automatic sprinkler system will be provided
in:
When is Data Sheet 2-0 being released?
Data Sheet 2-0 is to be released to the public via
the FM Global website, free of charge, in…

April 2010
What’s next after Data Sheet 2-0?
Time to update:

Everyone’s second favorite novel

What changes are in store for DS 8-9?
• Grouping of Commodity Hazards for
Protection Tables:
 Class 1 – 3
 Class 4 – Cartoned Unexpanded Plastics
 Cartoned Expanded Plastics
 Uncartoned Unexpanded Plastics
 Uncartoned Expanded Plastics
What changes are in store for DS 8-9?
• “Storage Sprinklers” to replace CMDA,
CMSA and Suppression Mode Sprinklers
Storage Sprinkler designs will be based on sprinkler’s:
– K-factor – RTI – Sprinkler Spacing
– Orientation – Temperature Rating
• Protection options will be independent of:
– Storage Height
– Aisle Width
– Favorable Factors
What changes are in store for DS 8-9?
• Storage Sprinkler design to be based on a
number of sprinklers at a given pressure:
Ex: Design for an Upright SR 160oF (70oC) K16.8
(K240) might be 20 AS @ 22 psi (1.5 bar)

• Because of the Storage Sprinkler concept,

density will no longer be used for sprinkler
system designs.
What changes are in store for DS 8-9?
• Why are we getting rid of density as a design
parameter?
– So that the pressure used in the design at the most
remote sprinkler can not be reduced below the
pressure that was used during full-scale fire testing
– So that the design offered does not have to be
based on the least efficient sprinkler
– To bring simplicity and consistency to the design of
all sprinkler systems
– Because density is not the driving factor in
sprinkler system performance
Why is density not the most important
design aspect? Let’s see…
Common Test Conditions:
• 20 ft (6.0 m) Storage / 30 ft (9.0 m) Ceiling
• Rack Storage of Cartoned Unexpanded Plastic
• Test No. 1: • Test No. 2:
– 0.80 gpm/ft2 (32 – 0.60 gpm/ft2 (24
mm/min) Density mm/min) Density
– 8 ft (2.4 m) Aisle – 4 ft (1.2 m) Aisle
Test No. 1
Test No. 2
What changes are in store for DS 8-9?
• Differences between tests include:
– K-factor (11.2 vs. 25.2)
– Orientation (Upright vs. Pendent)
– RTI (Standard Response vs. Quick Response)
– Spacing (Standard vs. Extended-Coverage)

• Size of Operating Area determines:

– Hose Demand
– Duration
What changes are in store for DS 8-9?
Ceiling-Level protection tables to include all
sprinkler protection options for a given:
– Commodity hazard
– Storage arrangement

Protection tables to look like the following slide
