2. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

2.1 SAFETY OF THIS REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM

This remote control system is equipped with both, electronic and mechanical protection devices for the functional safety,
fault-free operation and interference resistance. As long as all safety precautions are being followed, control commands from
other transmitters cannot be processed or transmitted to other receiver units, as all information from the transmitter and the
receiver is addressed uniquely.

2.2 SAFETY INFORMATION

Using a remote control system allows the operator for more mobility in his working area and increased precision. However, the
user and the maintenance staff always have to be attentive, in order to access all these advantages. The operator always has to
keep an eye on the machine running, as this is necessary to assure a proper and safe operation of the remote control system.
ATTENTION! When new transmitters are learned to receiver, the old ones must be withdrawn!

2.3 AUTHORISED OPERATORS HAVE TO BE INSTRUCTED ACCORDING TO THE INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

REGULATIONS!
Always check the operating instructions of your machine to receive more important information!
The operator has to assure that unauthorised persons cannot operate the transmitter. To ensure this, he has to turn off the
remote control, if applicable remove the key or the rechargeable battery and/or store the transmitter in a lockable location. This
is the only way to prevent undesired use or misuse by unauthorised persons. The operator must have access to all operating
instructions, which are necessary for the proper operation of the machine to be controlled. If the system is not used by the buyer
himself, if it was lent, rented or sold, please provide this operating manual and the required safety instructions before operation.
Before operating this remote control, the operator has to read and fully understand all instructions of every chapter of
this manual.

2.4 SOURCES OF RISK

The system is designed for permitting machines to be controlled by a remote control. However, control commands are also
transmitted outside your range of vision and through or around obstacles.
Therefore:
• Switch the transmitter off if it is not in use
• Protect your transmitter from unauthorised third-party access by:
- Removing the key switch (applies to systems with key switch)
- Removing the rechargeable battery, if your transmitter does have a rechargeable battery system
- PIN-Code (for transmitters without batteries or battery exchange system)
- Locking the transmitter in a secure location
• The protection devices may not be modified or removed

ATTENTION! In case of non-compliance, warranty claims according to the Civil Code (ABGB/ BGB) and the Commercial
Code (UGB/HGB) are excluded.

2.5 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN THE WORKING AREA

Make sure, that there are no risks for the operator within the working area of the remote control. Ensure, that there are no
obstacles in the working area and that dangerous situations, affecting the operational safety, are avoided. Make sure, you
position yourself securely. Before each use of the remote control system, ensure, that nobody is within the working area or the
swiveling range of your load. If a carrying strap is provided for your transmitter, this has to be used.

2.6 PROTECTION DEVICES

All industrial ARCON remote control systems are equipped with an emergency STOP-switch, located on the control panel of
the transmitter.
The radio remote control system is provided with protection devices, which are activated automatically in the following cases:
• Radio interference within the working area, affecting the frequency range of the ARCON remote control.
• Exceeding the range of the transmitter.
• Error in the STOP-circuit
In these cases, the remote control will be stopped immediately and the output signals of the receiver are interrupted.

2.7 IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

1. Press the STOP-switch. 2. Turn the key switch to position „OFF“
3. Wait until the machine has stopped. 4. Proceed as instructed in the operating manual for your machine.

Unlock STOP-switch by turning clockwise Push/Pull-STOP-switch

28
3. PROTECTION DEVICES

3.1 TRANSMITTER
Key switch:
Almost all ARCON transmitters are equipped with a key switch. This key enables the operator to switch off the transmitter,
when it is not in use. Furthermore, the key switch prevents undesired use or misuse by unauthorised persons and in case of
maintenance work on the machine if it is removed.

Self test:
After turning the key switch, the system performs a self-test. When the green LED is flashing, the transmitter is ready for
operation.

Button start/horn – neutral position:

After the self-test, the system has to be started first. All control functions have to be in neutral position and the power-on
switch on the transmitter (marked ‘I’) has to be pushed for more than 2 seconds. If you want to continue work after a radio
dropout, a restart of the system is also mandatory. If one of the control functions is activated, the system cannot be
started. This protective measurement ensures that machine motions cannot be activated accidentally.

STOP-switch:
Our transmitters are equipped with a STOP-switch. The STOP-switch is the most important safety feature of the remote
control. It ensures that the machine operator can stop the machine at any time.

Battery monitoring:
The transmitter‘s electronics permanently monitor the battery status. If the battery reaches undervoltage, an optical or
acoustic signal will alert the operator, bevor the transmitter shuts down.

Mechanical construction:
A mechanical guard on the transmitter protects the buttons and joysticks from shocks and dropping. For this purpose you
also use the ergonomically designed carrying devices. The transmitter housing meets the requirements of daily operation.

3.2 RECEIVER
Self-test:
The software runs a self-test after the receiver is powered. If the self-test is negative, the receiver will not start and remain
in a safe state.

STOP:
The receiver has a redundant, self-monitoring safety circuit. In the event of an error the detection of an activated
STOP-switch of the transmitter, the STOP relays open and the receiver changes to safe state.

3.3 SYSTEM
System Code:
For safety reasons each remote control has its own address. It ensures that only the designated transmitter can activate
the corresponding receiver.

Radio interference:
In case of radio interference, the system will switch into a safe mode after the designated time-out interval.

Software:
After the startup procedure, the software of the system performs a system test, where all safety devices are checked. The
system switches into safe mode in case of a disruption.

29
4. INSTALLATION

4.1 POSITIONING OF THE RECEIVER UNIT

When mounting the receiver, ensure that the antenna has maximum radio reception, in order to have a radio remote
control that functions properly. Metal parts of the machine to be controlled in the immediate vicinity of the receiver unit
impair a proper radio reception. If the receiver is to be installed inside a metal housing or in a shielded area, an appropriate
extension and an adequate antenna have to be used in order to achieve a suitable operating range. Contact ARCON to get
more detailed information.
Furthermore, the receiver has to be mounted in a safe and easily accessible place, in order to facilitate future installation
and maintenance work. Install the receiver unit with the cable connections downwards. If the receiver is to be installed on a
vehicle or on a mobile machine, you should equip the receiver with rubber buffers, which prevent the transmission of heavy
vibrations from the machine to the receiver. When mounting the rubber buffers, please pay attention to the tightening
torque of 2 Nm.
Furthermore, the rubber buffers need to be secured against loosening. If these rubber buffers are not included in your radio
remote control system, you may obtain them from your dealer directly.

ATTENTION!
• The installation of the receiver unit on the electric system of the machine may only be performed by a qualified
person, familiar with the electrical circuitry of the machine and the technical features of the remote control.
• Both, the transmitter and the receiver have to be powered down during installation or maintenance work.
• All instructions, concerning the health of persons within the immediate vicinity of installation, all valid local
regulations and fire regulations have to be observed strictly.
• The receiving unit is only allowed to be used in areas with limited access and must not be accessible for children in
particular.
• ARCON will not accept liability or provide a guarantee in the event of personal injury or damage to property, resulting
from improper or negligent use of the remote control or non-compliance with the regulations or instructions.

4.2 INSTALLATION OF THE OUTPUT WIRING

Switch the power supply of the machine off before attaching the voltage supply of the receiver.
Authorise a qualified technician to perform the wiring. Improper wiring may cause serious system damage and may void
your guarantee. The output wiring has to be installed according to the connection diagram of the machine and the remote
control. Only use contacts of good quality and sheathed cable with a convenient cross section according to the switching
capacity for the connection, minimum of 0,75mm².
You will find detailed information about the receiver wiring in the enclosed documents.
The power supply and the ground wire are extremely important. They have to be connected to fail-safe electrical
connections.

ATTENTION!
Do not use contact spray on the connectors as this may cause a short circuit or unwanted machine movement!

4.3 PROPER INSTALLATION OF THE RECEIVER UNIT / ANTENNA

Important!
To guarantee optimal operation, follow the instructions given >2m
below to mount the antennas.

In General:
• Only antennas that have been approved by ARCON may be used.
• Neither the receiver nor the transmitter may be used without
antenna.

For Feedback-Systems:
• Keep a minimum distance of 2 m (6 ft.) between the
receiver antenna and the transmitter antenna.

30
4. INSTALLATION

The antenna must be mounted vertically. You should have visual contact from all positions to the antenna.
When positioning the receiver unit, make sure that the antenna is free-standing and not covered up or shielded by
materials that may impair or block the transmission.

If such an installation of the receiver unit is not possible, please use an antenna extension,
to mount the antenna in a suitable position.

4.4 IDENTIFICATION
If it isn’t evident for the operator which machine or machine part is controlled by the transmitting unit, this has to be clearly
marked by the machine manufacturer or by the machine operator.

31

6.7 OPERATION WITH CABLE CONTROL (OPTIONAL)

If your ARCON remote control has a cable control, it can also be operated without radio signal and
battery. The transmitter will be supplied with power from the receiver. The transmitter communicates
with the receiver via cable.

There are two available versions:

• „2-wire-technique“ (without feedback):
The battery case takes care of the communication and the power supply of the transmitter.
With this option, the cable control has to be disconnected from the transmitter and the
receiver to enable radio operation.
• „Multi-wire-technique“ (with feedback):
A special plug takes care of the communication and power supply of the transmitter.
The cable control only needs to be connected either from the transmitter or the receiver to
enable radio operation. The number of poles and the plug versions can vary depending on
the particular remote control.

ATTENTION!
The risk of tripping for the operator and other persons in the machine area is increased
during cable control operation because of the control cable.

36
6. STARTUP PROCEDURE / OPERATION

6.8 VIDEO-FEEDBACK (OPTIONAL)

If your ARCON remote control is equipped with a Video-Feedback assistant system, the video signal supplied by a camera
at the machine will be transmitted wireless to the transmitter and shown at the display.
Depending on the version of your transmitter, the video transmission has to be activated or it also can be chosen between
different cameras on the transmitter.
It is recommended to activate the video transmission only if it is really needed on the transmitter as this reduces the
battery life significantly.

ATTENTION!
The Video Feedback assistant system can be used as an additional aid to keep an eye on difficult to access areas.
The direct eye contact from the operator to the controlled machine or controlled machine part has to be maintained
nevertheless at any time.

6.9 MULTIFUNCTION DISPLAY GDC-X.X (OPTIONAL)

By the multifunction display, machine data can be displayed in colour on the ARCON transmitter. Input parameters
(optionally available softkey foil or by other command devices) can be used to adjust or activate parameters or functions
on the machine side.

The GDC display allows you to adapt the visualisation to your machine in the best possible and flexible way due to the freely
programmable interface.

ATTENTION!
Data generated via software on the graphic display GDC are not subject to any safety related monitoring by the ARCON
control system.

Unlike the control data, this data can be transmitted continuously when the receiver goes into the safe state.

It is the responsibility of the machine controller that no dangerous situation, movements or functions are caused by
these data.

ARCON generally assumes no responsibility for the program developed by the customer and their effects.

37
7. BATTERY CHARGER AND RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES

The batteries have to be fully charged before startup! Charger, batteries and devices with exchangeable battery have to be
placed and stored in a clean and dry location. Connect the charger, depending on the type, to a permanent power supply.

ATTENTION!
Only use original ARCON batteries and battery chargers! Failure to observe may result in explosion hazard or
damaging.
Escaping chemicals and flying parts may cause irreparable damages.

NOTE!
Rechargeable battery packs are to be treated as hazardous waste and have to be disposed properly. Defective
rechargeable battery packs can also be disposed directly through ARCON.

7.1 CHARGING RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES IN THE BATTERY CHARGER

To recharge a rechargeable battery, insert the battery into the charger. After performing a state detection of the battery,
the charger will start to recharge the battery.
Once the batteries are fully charged, the battery charger automatically switches over to trickle charging. This allows for the
battery to stay in the charger without damage.

NOTE!
In order to avoid downtimes, we recommend to always have a fully charged battery pack ready.

10. MAINTENANCE, GUARANTEE, DISPOSAL

10.1 MAINTENANCE
In order to always have a safe remote control, please note the following information: Each radio remote control has to be
inspected on a regular basis, at least once a year. The maintenance staff has to ensure that power to the transmitter and
the receiver is shut off during maintenance and inspection work. A preventive maintenance by the operator on a regular
basis will make for an extended service life of the remote control.

Installation, adjustment and service work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
Possible repairs may only be performed in service stations that are authorised or recommended by ARCON or directly in
ARCON‘s service and spare parts department.

The use of non-original spare parts or the assignment of unauthorised personnel will immediately void your guarantee.

ATTENTION!
In case of oxidized electric contacts, do not use antioxidant or similar! Please contact your dealer for the immediate
replacement of the affected parts. The use of chemical agents will cause damage on the internal components of the
remote control.

10.2 GUARANTEE AND WARRANTY

The guarantee and warranty conditions are listed in our General Terms and Conditions for Delivery and Payment. You will
find the currently valid version on our website www.arconremote.com.

10.3 DISPOSAL
