INFORMATION DESCRIPTION
GENERIC NAME OF The generic name for Hovid Hovasc medicine is Amlodipine
MEDICINE Besylate.
BRAND NAME OF The brand name for this medicine is Hovasc.
MEDICINE
SPECIFIC INDICATION The indication for taking this medicine are used for the treatment
OF THE MEDICINE of high blood pressure and to control the patient’s blood pressure
from rising up. Amlodipine besylate also used to treat patient with
chest pain either stable angina or variant angina. This medicine
also can be used alone or in conjunction with other drugs to treat
hypertension and coronary artery disease in patients (Bulsara &
Casagnol, 2020).
STRENGTH OF THE The strength of the medicine for elderly was 5mg for the first time

beginning dose of 2.5mg is indicated for the elderly and the patient
with hepatic failure condition (Fares et al., 2016)

FORMULATION OF Amlodipine (AD) is one of the groups from calcium channel

salts that contain in the formulation of amlodipine (Sheraz et al.,
2016).
Amlodipine besylate chemically described as 3-Ethyl-5-methyl (±)-

2-[(2-aminoethoxy)methyl]-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-1,4-dihydro-6-
methyl-3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, monobenzenesulphonate. The
empirical formula is C20H25CIN2O5 •C6H6O3S.
ROUTE OF The medicine primarily was taken orally. Oral tablet suspension is
ADMINISTRATION available for patients especially elderly that have difficulty in
swallowing (Bulsara & Casagnol, 2020).

MEDICINE STORAGE Keep the medicine in the temperature below than 30 degree
Celsius.
CONTRAINDICATIONS The contraindication of this medicine is amlodipine is not to be
used in patients who have a history of amlodipine hypersensitivity.
This medicine should be used in cautions in patients that suffering
from cardiogenic shock, severe aortic stenosis, unstable angina,
severe hypotension, heart failure or hepatic impairment.
ADVERSE REACTIONS Amlodipine Besylate has a number of serious side effects. The
most common adverse reactions that commonly happen towards
the patient were:
- Pulmonary edema
- Heart failure
- Peripheral edema
- Flushing
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
The incidence of edema, dizziness, flushing and palpitations was
10.8%, 3.4%, 2.6% and 4.5% respectively at a dose of 10mg.
Headache, fatigue, nausea and abdominal pain were all reported
at 7.3%,4.5%,2.9% and 1.6% respectively (Bulsara & Casagnol,
2020).
USE IN PREGNANCY Use in Pregnancy
AND LACTATION - Amlodipine falls into category “C” in the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) which is there are no adequate and
well-controlled studies had been made towards the
pregnant woman. On the animal studies, there are no
adverse effect have shown. During pregnancy, amlodipine
should be used only if the potential benefit exceeds the
potential risks to the fetus. It’s unclear whether this
medicine will affect the unborn baby.
Use in Lactation
- Amlodipine is found in the human breastmilk. However, no
adverse effect on the breastfeeding infant have been
observed (Morgan et al., 2018). It is recommended that
nursing be stopped if the mother decided to take
amlodipine medicine and consult the doctor and
pharmacist for safety.
SHAPE OF MEDICINE The shape of Hovasc medicine tablet was oblong, bevel edged,
shallow convex and “HOVID” embossed on another face.
COLOUR OF MEDICINE The colour of the medicine is white to off white uncoated.
