1.2 Major Milestones

Tata Motors was founded in 1945, as a locomotive manufacturer. Tata Group entered the
commercial vehicle sector in 1954 after forming a joint venture with Daimler-Benz of Germany.
After years of dominating the commercial vehicle market in India, Tata Motors entered the
passenger vehicle market in 1991 by launching the Tata Sierra, a sport utility vehicle based on the
Tata Mobile platform. Tata subsequently launched the Tata Estate (1992; a station wagon design
based on the earlier Tata Mobile), the Tata Sumo (1994, a 5-door SUV) and the Tata Safari (1998).

Tata launched the Indica in 1998, a fully indigenous Indian passenger car tailor-made to suit Indian
consumer needs though styled by I.D.E.A, Italy. Although initially criticised by auto analysts, its
excellent fuel economy, powerful engine, and an aggressive marketing strategy made it one of the
best-selling cars in the history of the Indian automobile industries. A newer version of the car,
named Indica V2, was a major improvement over the previous version and quickly became a mass
favourite. Tata Motors also successfully exported large numbers of the car to South Africa. The

torque, and vehicle load and road inclination, resulting in an optimised gear shifting and hassle-free
driving experience.

2.5 Types of Inspection Process

Inspection is done to the object or a product to identify the quality, and ability to withstand for the
required work. There are different types of inspections like online inspection, offline inspection contact
inspection and more. Inspection is the most important factor that can be done in different ways. By this,
we can identify the products specifications. If the product that manufactured is good then it is used for
the next step, if not it will be sent to scrap.

There are different types of inspections they are as follows:

● Online Inspection.
● Off-line Inspection.
● Contact Inspection.
● Non-contact Inspection.

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering, GCE Ramanagaram Page No. 13

TRAINEE APPRENTICE 2021-22

ONLINE INSPECTION:

● This type of inspection is done at the time of machining itself, by this, there is an
advantage, it can inspect from work-piece to finished product. if there is any defect
identified at
● starting or at the time of machining the work-piece is sent to scrap.
● Measuring is also done in sequentially on the manufacturing part. Automated
inspections are more useful for online inspections.

OFF-LINE INSPECTION:

● Offline inspection is known that the product is inspected after the completion of the
complete machining process. this inspection is done at a different place where from
manufacturing place.
● This is applied if there is more time to inspect the product after machining. by using
CMM machine the accurate offline inspection is done to different products.

CONTACT INSPECTION:

● In this type of measuring there is physical contact between product and measuring
instrument. the contact is done by the probe device. by this contact on the work-piece,
the cause of damage may occur on it. when the object is used to inspect then
work-piece is held by another additional handling. this type of process done in many
industries.

NON-CONTACT INSPECTION:

● This a type of non-contacting, in this there is no contact between the product and
inspection instrument. in this inspection, it uses a sensor that used to inspect the
product.
● By this instrument, the damages to workpiece do not occur. this is more accurate than
contact type and increases the speed of inspection time. this is used in many fields to
decrease the time of inspection.

3.2 Methodology Used for the Tasks assigned

Quality control in the early design stage.

Contents of mechanical engineering design input stage mainly include the craft package with patent
nature, design documents for producing, design basis and technical information and the data of
basic design, as well as the specific design requirements made by users. These documents and
requirements must go through the review and approval by professional designers or project before
the next-step work begins. Since it is in the initial design stage, greater requirements are necessary
for the quality, demands and rationality of the documents, along with the integrity of the design
input. All departments have to pay great attention to and take active part in the stage. In other
words, design input is the fundamental requirement of the design work and the initial stage of the
quality control, which is directly related to the follow-up work of product quality, design schedule
and the design appraisal. The materials involved in engineering design including the contract
documents, design specification and craft published documents, preliminary interface figures and
the contract appendixes, feasibility reports and so on should also be examined and verified to
guarantee all indicators and requirements conforming to the design status and having feasibility, and
be handed in to the relevant departments and the persons in charge for final review and signature
after all the work has been done. Problems about quality if found in the design must be corrected
and modified directly and their eligibility test after modification must be guaranteed.

Quality control in the design interface stage-

According to the form of design interface, it can be divided into two types, organization and
technology. The organization interface refers to the design department shall regularly have an
effective joint checkup about design with the company’s departments of management, procurement
and work area, thus ensuring the effectiveness of the cooperation between departments, as well as
the smooth design work. Technology interface means the design’s domains make conditional
transfer and adjustment in the process, of which include interface table’s offer, review,
modification, affirmation and reception of the design technology. The quality control of design
interface requires not only effective quality control measures, systems and methods, but also great
coordination between departments, which is the key to the smooth operation of the whole design, so

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering, GCE Ramanagaram Page No. 19

TRAINEE APPRENTICE 2021-22

different departments must have their clear and specific responsibilities and work harmoniously. In
addition, scientific, reasonable and effective interface management programs are indispensable to
quality control. Butt-joint between different departments in practical work must be implemented
strictly in accordance with the stipulations of the program so as to ensure the order of interface
process, the feasibility of quality control and the effectiveness of the butt joint quality to the full
extent. The work area interface of organization interface specifically involves the arrangement of
work-starting meeting, the layout of designers, the initial completion of the general diagram and the
detailed division in the engineering design stage. Design director should foresee possible problems
in design in the meeting process, formulate detailed work plans and coordinate design tasks
between domains and departments. For the device and layout of mechanical design, designers
should make preliminary pipeline design on the basis of the design material and the demands of the
customers at this stage, then hand the drawings to professionals to make feasibility analysis and
confirm the work of the next stage. Besides, the preliminary general diagram should also be given
to customers for preliminary review and when it is passed design department shall make formal
design arrangements and detail-adjustments.

Quality control in mid-term design.

Quality control in design review-

Quality control in design review lies firstly in the embodiment of functionality in meeting the
practical requirements, including the designed machines both meeting the need of practical
production and efficiently matching up to and forming with other machines in the factory so as to
help the enterprise achieve large-scale production and sustainable use of machines and equipment’s.
Secondly is affirmation of the safety, credibility of the mechanical design, of which safety referring
to the mechanical devices in the scene not only can satisfy natural disaster resistance of the design
and quality control, but achieve the good properties of anti-explosion, fire prevention and
anti-corrosion. The fulfilling of these conditions not only reduces the risks of the workers’ actual
operation or production, but also avoids the irreversible economic losses incurred by equipment
failure when users use it. What’s more, the feasibility of quality control of mechanical design
mainly means that the basic data for the equipment should be accurate, complete and reasonable. If
the user demands verification report, the simulation analysis or material certificate and so on
provided in the design scheme, designers should present them completely, accurately and timely.

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering, GCE Ramanagaram Page No. 20

TRAINEE APPRENTICE 2021-22

Finally is the practical and economical quality control for mechanical design review, of which the
former means whether the designed machines can meet the actual dismantling and the
transportation requirements. Timely adjustments should be made and scheme confirmed if there is
an overweight or over-transport phenomenon. The realization of economy property includes two
aspects of cost control and the accomplishment of the design goals, ensuring both advanced nature
and innovation of the mechanical design, and the satisfaction of the yield rate and economic
treatment.

Quality control in design sign-

The quality control in design sign is an important part in the whole control process, and is also the key link to
ensure the accurate cooperation and reasonable control in the above each stage. In this process, quality
control personnel can eliminate or explanation misunderstanding, leak, or fault which generated in the
previous link. Including comprehensive sign and professional sign two parts ,the former mainly includes the
reasonable layout of the mechanical design and the inspection to spatial arrangement ,and the latter is aimed
at the conformance between the actual design and file specification. If the design file does not meet the
requirements of users or design documents, responsibility identification and quality improvement should be
done . In addition, the time to sign must be arranged reasonably by design director; the sign of design
drawings in relevant profession should be carried out in the completion stage of the drawings, and the quality
problems should be timely solved or feedback in the process of sign. On the premise of ensuring the quality
of design documents meet the requirements, as far as possible to save time and put forward reasonable
solution, etc.

Quality control in design confirmation and output.

Design confirmation is an important aspect to ensure the preciseness and repeatability of quality control.
This process is carried out alone after completing the sign, which ensures that the results of the final design
will not be influenced by the last confirmation work, and embodies its objectivity fully. Followed by the
design output includes the printing and distributing of design drawings, material list, mechanical operation
manual, site operation documents, instructor, quality standard and other documents. Although it marks the
smooth completion of the design work, the actual operation process still need to pay attention to avoid the
quality control problems of plot errors, issues not in time or unqualified construction standard and so on. For
the printing and distributing of design documents also must be approved by the design department and
recorded by output department's , etc. This can guarantee the integrity of the design documents, but also
ensures confidentiality.

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering, GCE Ramanagaram Page No. 21

TRAINEE APPRENTICE 2021-22

Quality control in design later.

Quality control in design change-

Mechanical engineering design change includes user, site and significant change. Design change
that put forward by the user should communicate and confirm the feasibility with design. According
to the strict variation procedure, this only can be completed under the premise of mutual consent.
For the scene change requires the parties to accredit representatives with professional background
and knowledge, who should determine the change responsibility and issue engineering change
notices. It needs general manager or design director sign before they can continue to design changes
if there is no site representative. Major design change means some influential aspects for
mechanical operation, project implementation, progress to complete or charge additional. The
change not only should be approved by the relevant department or director, but we also need to
organize project personnel to audit and eventually determine whether change is feasible. The entire
quality control of change process is not only to clear the corresponding responsibility and feasibility
analysis, but at the same time also need to negotiate or add cost that caused in the process of design
change. In addition ,the detailed records of design change have a great significance to provide
effective objective evidence and confirm the quality control target.

Quality control in design information feedback.

Quality control in design information feedback belongs to the last link of the whole
process.Fundamental purpose is to collect and analyze feedback information from users or review
units, and improve design deficiencies or defects on the basis of summarizing the successful
experience. The information of this part mainly includes the local operating data of mechanical
equipment , the situation of acceptance, put into operation and customer response, etc.Though these
information will help design department to improve methods or provide research basis, the specific
analysis work should be done by management department, and finally make a responsibility
assignment or put forward improved methods, measures and regulation, etc.

CHAPTER - 04

SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

4.1 Technical Outcomes of the Internship

Training is an investment that businesses make in their workforce. Like any investment, it must
have a payoff if it is to be considered worthwhile. An immediate objective of training is to give
employees the skills they need to become better workers, resulting in financial gain. Other
objectives include creating a supportive workplace, so employees know they are valued and feel
more satisfaction in their jobs.

Increase Efficiencies in Processes

The main purpose of training is to ensure that all employees have the technical skills needed to
perform the job efficiently and smoothly. While technical training can be job-specific, programs
typically focus on the hard skills an employee needs to meet the key performance indicators
associated with the role. Employees who are competent and up-to-date with industry best practices
are more productive and have fewer accidents. These factors help to position your business as a
strong competitor within your market.

Increase Motivation and Engagement

Giving people the knowledge, education and tools to work better, win promotions and fulfill their
career potential shows employees they are valued. Employees who feel appreciated tend to feel
motivated in their work and are more satisfied with their jobs. Naturally, this creates loyalty,
engagement and enthusiasm among staff – attributes that boost performance and benefit the
organization.

Reduce Employee Turnover

An important aspect of training is to give context to a worker's role so he understands how his daily
efforts support the wider company mission. Workers who are stuck in job-related silos tend to feel
disenfranchised about their jobs; this has long been associated with increased rates of absenteeism

TRAINEE APPRENTICE 2021-22

and turnover. Studies suggest that it costs anywhere from 16-to-66 percent of an employee's salary
to replace someone who quits. So, there are considerable cost savings to be made from helping an
employee feel like a relevant and valued part of the organization, so she is far less likely to leave.

Upskill Employees

Training presents an opportunity to expand the knowledge base of employees – addressing

weaknesses, upskilling them to do new and different tasks and allowing them to work
independently without supervision. Upskilling not only keeps employees fresh, independent and
motivated, it also enhances the company's profile. A good company is seen as one that develops and
retains staff rather than churns, so having a strong and consistent training policy makes a company
more attractive to hires. Leadership and management training programs are especially appealing
both for graduates and mid-career employees since they show that a company is committed to
promoting staff from within.

Risk Management

Certain types of training are specifically designed to minimize the risk to workers and the
organization in terms of accidents, safety code violations, lawsuits and customer complaints.
Diversity training, training about sexual harassment, workplace safety training, customer service
training and other quality initiatives can all help businesses to develop their services and
competitiveness while minimizing any hazards along the way.

Intellectual skills

With this type of learning outcome, the learner will understand concepts, rules or procedures. Put
simply, this is understanding how to do something.

Cognitive strategy

In this type of learning outcome, the learner uses personal strategies to think, organize, learn and
behave.

Verbal Information

Dept. Of Mechanical Engineering, GCE Ramanagaram Page No. 29

TRAINEE APPRENTICE 2021-22

This type of learning outcome is when the learner is able to definitively state what they have
learned from an organized body of knowledge.

Motor skills

This category is concerned with the physical ability to perform actions, achieving fluidity,
smoothness or proper timing through practice.

Attitude

This is the internal state that reflects in the learner’s behaviour. It is complex to quantify but can be
shown in the learner’s response to people or situations.

4.2 Non-Technical Outcomes of the Internship

Hiring managers often seek candidates with a combination of technical and non-technical skills, but
the specific skills required for a position may vary based on the type of job and its requirements.
However, there are some non-technical skills hiring managers seek regardless of industry or job.
Some examples of these non-technical skills to develop include:

1. Communication

Communication skills allow you to share information effectively with others. Many employers seek
candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills, and it's important for you to be
able to communicate through different ways, such as online, in person or on the phone, and with
different channels, such as through email or instant messaging. Communication skills can help
create better work because they reduce the risk of miscommunication or missed information.

2. Cooperation

Cooperation refers to your ability to work as a team. This involves completing your own individual
tasks or goals to contribute to achieving a common goal, and this may require making compromises

Adaptability reflects your ability to process, handle and respond to changes. It's important for you
to be comfortable exploring alternative solutions or trying new things in the workplace.
Adaptability also supports your ability to work with others, such as modifying your original plan for
a project to better align with someone else's vision for the project.

4. Organization

Organizational skills help you create and maintain an orderly workspace and develop processes that
allow you to complete your work efficiently. This may involve finding ways to most effectively use
your resources or developing and implementing strategies that foster success. Organizational skills
often help ensure you complete work in a timely manner to avoid missing deadlines.

5. Collaboration

Collaboration skills relate to how well you work with others on a project to achieve a shared goal.
These skills help you create a team-first mindset to focus on shared success rather than individual
success. Collaboration skills are especially important when you may work on a team with members
in other areas, requiring you to adapt to different situations or use various communication styles.

6. Creativity

Creative skills help you view challenges in new ways. These skills allow you to examine all aspects
of a situation and consider new possibilities that challenge the status quo. Creativity is important to
many employers because it often leads to innovation that pushes the company in new directions.

7. Time management

Time-management skills reflect how you structure your workday and use your time. Strong
time-management skills may help you avoid procrastination to ensure you consistently meet your
deadlines. Consider exploring different tools or organizational resources to help you manage your
time effectively.

Prioritization refers to how well you determine what your most important tasks are. This involves
distinguishing your highest priority tasks are from those that can wait to be completed.
Prioritization skills also reflect your ability to maintain focus on broad goals without compromising
short-term tasks that may require your attention.

9. Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm refers to your excitement about the specific job or your desired industry. Hiring
managers often look for candidates who are excited to participate in their company culture and
invest in the organization and its growth. Demonstrating your enthusiasm may involve emphasizing
your genuine desire to join the company or to learn more about the industry to better develop your
technical skills.

10. Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence relates to your ability to understand your own emotions as well as how well
you understand and respond to the emotions of others. Demonstrating emotional intelligence often
includes being empathetic and understanding of others. Employers seek candidates with emotional
intelligence because it may help improve communication, customer service, employee retention,
morale, teamwork and more.

Non-technical skills in the workplace

Here are some examples of when you may use non-technical skills in the workplace:

● Brainstorming ideas for a project

● Communicating with clients
● Completing your work before your deadlines
● Creating a schedule for your workday

CHAPTER-05

CONCLUSIONS

Product quality is an important part of TATA’s business. Keeping this in mind TATA leaves no gap
in the market unoccupied. They have a skilled research and development team who anticipates
future changes to design products that can benchmark best products in the world. They manufacture
automobiles with variants that are accepted in India as well as other foreign countries. This allows
the company to instill features in advance winning them first mover advantage over their
competitors in many cases. Their most powerful aspect that differentiates them from their
competitors is their service. The organization has great services, they have service workshop every
40-50 km. Every quality aspect described above ties strongly with their existing vision, mission and
value system that they appraise. This makes the organization a highly successful one due to the
coordination the company promotes internally and externally with their customers. The traditional
factory of TATA Motors is called to be more efficient than other factories due to its production
lines. At TATA, the production process is divided between three assembly line each line is well
planned with sophistication containing about forty to forty-five work stations. Due to a continuous
assembly line, the vehicle (end product) enters with components only and exits with the final
products. It has high degree of automation involved, this minimizes manual labor. The materials are
placed very close to the line to decrease travelling time.

Each evening during the workshop, the participants met in a hall to continue discussions of the
ideas that were presented that day by operators of studies on different operations and to present,
share and continue discussions from the round table sessions.

In the course of discussions, the trainers reviewed the workings of different types of operations
present in our workshop. We recognized that in many developing countries they have single
machine can do different types of jobs those machines we also found in our workshop and
operated also and few machines also have been replaced by a new technology.

These changes provide new possibilities and challenges on demand of daily uses in vehicles and
for many other uses.
