Golf Club Face Angle
Golf Club Face Angle
Golf Club Face Angle
Try neutral grip position. Test by holding club horizontal and see how far you can rotate face -should be
same in both directions
Wrist Angles
Hold lead arm with other arm try twisting club (arched)bowing wrist-closes club face and cupping wrist
(opens club face)
Try to keep wrist in a neutral position. (back of arm and back of wrist match)
Golfer Skill
Club Position
-raise club handle more vertical, club face opens and faces more right of target
-lower club handle more horizontal, club face closes and faces more left of target
-move handle forwards ahead of ball -tends to open face so points to right of target
-move handle backwards behind ball -tends to close face so points to left of target
Therefore -need to twist club a little bit (close) to offset open position from open position from handle
height and position
Poor Impact Position
-handle too far back, lead wrist is cupped, arms are buckled or bent, cramped position after impact
Drill -place tee on glove so sticks straight out from wrist, at top of backswing, try to point so pointing up
at sky (requires arching (bow) wrist) -club face now pointing up to sky-Need tee to point away from
player during downswing (poor position is if tee starts to point in front of player (wrist is moving
towards cupped position-bad)-keeping wrist bowed (push and rotates away from you) in downswing
brings club face pointing to the ground sooner and will help you get the club in proper position at impact
without having to rectify it somehow later.
-when we look at a good shaft angle at the top of backswing if our trail elbow moves up and out shaft
angle to a steeper vertical position
-when you reach top of backswing feel as though you hesitate with your lead arm for a split second and
then push down with your trail elbow towards your golf ball (ends up moving the shaft to a shallower
position)(up-lead arms stays a split second-right arm rotates-go through) -practice with a less pause
Need to rotate body to help rotate lead arm through impact -if struggle with handle not forward enough
it usually is because of poor body rotation
Put two tees under arms -awareness of body connected to arms-keep elbows same distance apart-try to
rote and keep arm structure while body rotates -try 50 yard shots
Problems that Create Fat Shots (before ball) (heavy or thin shots)
Causes include:
Don’t shift enough weight to the lead leg -makes it hard to get handle forwards (too much pressure still
on back leg)
-task change –
-tee up ball slightly put additional tee in front of ball (club head width away from ball)-het second tee
Topping the ball
-elbows bend and become further away from eachother (shortens the swing)
-low point of swing gets behind the ball (trying to get behind the ball to create elevation)
-drill – ball slightly inside lead weight on lead foot- use back leg for balance only -maintain balance by
placing sponge between elbows -always concentrate on moving the handle through the shot to prevent
back wrist from arching too early
Sometimes during shift of weight to lead leg, back foot doesn’t roll and then lift. Instead back foot lets
ankle twist away (rotates away from target) -use water bottle to prevent heel turn
Shank ball -trying to get hands forward -hands don’t travel in towards body -therefore ball hit by heel of
club. -use golf glove under lead arm to connect arm to body so that hands move inwards as body turns
To compress irons rotate body(open) to move hands forward -take short swings
