mm centres. The window is of the wooden casement type with four panes of glass and is 1200
mrn high x 900 mm wide. (Note: All other dimensions must be in keeping with good building

staircase is built with timber and has a housed string. The size of the upper floor joists is 50 mm

The external walls are built of 150 mm hollow concrete blocks (plastered on both sides.) The
partition walls and floor are constructed of timber. The floor joists are 250 mm × 50 mm and floor
boards are 150 mm × 25 mm tongued and grooved. The window at B – B on the plan view is
constructed of wood and is of the type shown in Figure 2. The external doors are of the four flat
panel type with flush planted moulds and the internal doors are of the flush type. The building
is covered with a gable roof; the position of the roof is outlined on the plan by the broken lines.

SECTION A
You are advised not to spend more than 50 minutes on this question.
1. Figure 1 shows the incomplete front elevation and an outline of the end elevation of a cupboard.
The dimensions for the cupboard and drawer are shown on the front elevation. The space
labelled A at the top of the cupboard is to be divided into two compartments. The lower
compartment should be designed to house a toaster oven whose height ranges between 200 and
250 mm, while the top compartment should accommodate a standard microwave with a height not
exceeding 300 mm. The main compartments for the unit are to be built using a combination of
19 mm thick plywood and 25 mm solid timber. Two cupboard doors built with 19 mm plywood and
a drawer built with 13 mm plywood are to be made and covered with plastic laminate and fitted
in the spaces labelled B and C respectively. The two doors and the drawer should be designed
to fit flush with the sides of the cupboard. The height of the drawer is 125 mm. The back of the
cupboard is to be covered with 6 mm plywood. The major dimensions for the combined unit are
shown on both elevations.

based on MODULES D5 to D9 of the syllabus – Walls, Floors, Roofs, Windows, Doors and Stairs.

1. Figure 1 shows the ground floor plan of a two-storey dwelling house. The exterior walls are
built of hollow concrete blocks and the partition walls are built of timber with plywood covering
on both sides. The outline of the roof type chosen for the building is shown on the plan by
broken lines. The ground floor is a 100 mm thick reinforced concrete slab on grade, with 10 mm
cement/sand screed finish, while the upper floor is built of timber. The staircase is built from
timber and housed strings are used to secure the risers and treads.
Note: The upper floor plan has the same exterior shape and dimensions as the ground floor.
