ASSIGNMENT MEETING 9 (NERVOUSNESS)

HI A1 / ENGLISH II

Nama : Hamied Endrianto

NIM : 20210510295

Program Studi : Hubungan Internasional (Reguler)

Dosen Pengampu : Bunga Ikasari, S.Pd., M.Pd.

Question:

1. What is your opinion about the speaker when delivering her speech? Is she feeling
confident enough or nervous? Show the evidence to support your argument.
2. What do you do to handle your nervousness when you are speaking in front of the
public?

Answer:

1) In my opinion, I feel like how she overcomes her fear and nervousness is by being so
honest and herself with the audience and it sort of helps everyone sympathize with her
and become closer with her. And during her speech, she's still coughing, but joking
about it. In the video, she's out of breath and coughing, apologizing to the crowd,
“Sorry to everyone who I shook hands with, I'm sick so you're screwed.” Just after
that apology, Lawrence is attempting to get back on track when she stumbles (despite
not walking anywhere) and discovers the heel of her shoe has gone wonky, “God,
sorry! I'm really not trying to like.. I'm sorry, I'm like all three of the Stooges right
now. I'm on Sudafed, I'm sorry!” Besides that, she should not follow a script because
it doesnt suit her. She should just go on stage and talk whats on her mind she can
express that ways better. This is not actually „hilarious‟. She's basically having a panic
attack. She isn't trying to be funny or anything, she's just trying to say thank you for
the award she got. I can totally relate to that kind of stage fright that she has, the one
where people have really high expectations on you and it makes you panic and act
really anxious. She is composed in an unusual way and how she carries herself is so
admirable. Most celebrities get used to everyone loving them and fans screaming to
have their autograph until they basically think that they are different kind of human

than normal people. Jennifer seems to be a normal person trapped in the world of
fame. She seems like could be your neighbor or any kind of „normal person‟, and
that's why I think she's so great. By the end of the speech, Lawrence is still holding on
to her self-possession, but she's also starting to have trouble looking at the crowd.
Fortunately, she's won them over and they're shouting back at her that she's „doing
fine‟. “Am I? I'm afraid to look at all of you. Shouldn't have looked at Bradley, that
was a mistake,” she says. In the end, it's a primer on how not to get flustered during a
speech. If Jennifer Lawrence can walk out in front of a roomful of critics, hopped up
on cold medication and still remain this charming, anyone can too.
2) I have been doing a lot of presentations, but every single time has never been an easy
job for me. Sometimes, I suddenly feel butterflies in my stomach, break out in a cold
sweat, and my mind has gone blank. In this situation, you do not have to worry much
because even Warren Buffet said that he was terrified of public speaking early in his
career so he asked a help from a public speaking professional to deal with his
nervousness. Practice is another critical component of planning for a successful
speech. Even if you know and like your topic you will still need to practice. You must
practice for time, content, and delivery. Your speech must not be too long or too short
but should fall within an acceptable range for the purpose of the speech. So, this is
what I do to handle my nervousness when I am speaking in front of the public:
 The first way to overcome nervousness when public speaking is to be confident.
Confidence is the most important thing in overcoming nervousness when it comes
to public speaking. When you are going to speak in public, you have to be
confident first. There are many ways to overcome nervousness when speaking in
public. But the first thing you can do is be confident. With confidence you can
also fight the shame, fear and insecurity that is in you.
 The second way to overcome nervousness when public speaking is understanding
and choosing the interesting material that you want to present. Before speaking in
public, prepare the material that you have mastered and studied before. Besides
that it is also important for you to choose material that is easily understood by the
audience. Then present the material you want to talk about in public as attractive
as possible in your own style and language. Material that is easy to understand and
interesting can make the audience more enthusiastic in paying attention and
listening to what you are going to say and talk about.

 The third way to overcome nervousness when public speaking is to take a deep
breath and make eye contact with the audience. When you experience nervousness
and anxiety disorders, especially because you see the audience in front of you.
The important thing you can do is take a deep breath and make eye contact with
the audience. Take a deep breath then hold five to seven seconds and exhale then
you can make eye contact with all the audience. By doing this you can overcome
nervousness and anxiety disorders when public speaking.
 The final way to overcome nervousness when public speaking is to interact with
the audience. You can interact with the audience when you feel nervous in public
speaking. For example you can greet some audience members and ask them
questions and others before starting public speaking. In this way, you can also
minimize nervousness and awkwardness when dealing with your audience.

Well, everyone must have experienced nervousness when speaking in public. This is a
common feeling and condition that people often experience. Which can be caused by
various factors such as stress, worry, fear, and so on. Some of the ways above are
ways that you can do and apply to overcome nervousness when public speaking. As a
suggestion you can also overcome nervousness when public speaking by calming
your mind before speaking in public. Besides that, try to think that you don‟t have to
be perfect like the expert speakers out there who are used to being on stage. After
doing a series of preparation, you need to learn to embrace your nervousness and turn
it into positive enthusiasm to be able to deliver a well presentation.
