CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE & BACKGROUND

The Researchers observed, nowadays everything is run by technology.

Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a numbers of ways. The

development of technology has empowered every aspect of human lives. There

are a lot of things that are powered by electricity and batteries. Many people

wondered if technology might help the surroundings.

This motivation is a strong belief that science will help undo the problems in

our environment caused by human activity. Too much trash like papers, candy

wrappers, bottles and more has always been a problem in our environment.

This trash causes floods in the city. One of the common problems is the dust.

These dusts can cause such diseases like asthma.

The tedious process of floor cleaning has become a menial, labor

demanding and time consuming task, which can be accomplished without an

overwhelming amount of skill. Researchers realized that people at home are too

busy for daily or weekly cleaning, especially for families with children. The elderly

who lives by themselves do not has the strength or ability to clean by

themselves, and the cost of hiring a maid is expensive. That’s why vacuum

cleaner is used by a lot of mothers and housekeepers, but not everybody can

afford its price. It is also the cause for the electric bill to get higher.

Although technology damages the environment in many ways, it has the

capability also to limit or prevent the damage using such environmental

technologies like recycling. Due to this, the researchers come up to create a

gadget that is called the tidy dustpan.The tidy dustpan uses battery in order for it

to function. This is not just an ordinary one, but a mobile dustpan. Researchers

will also use a remote to control it and will be synchronized with the machine

through a receiver. It can clean easily, faster and this can make all the mothers,

housekeepers and street sweepers not to have a hard time cleaning. It is also a

great help for them who spent their day in cleaning the house and

surroundings.The researcher demands to maintain the cleanliness of the

environment to prevent the diseases caused by dust that contains bacteria.

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to produce an electronically-driven tidy

dustpan.

Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following questions:

1. What is the quality acceptability of the product in terms of:

a. Viability

b. Efficiency

2. What are the natures of the raw materials used for the product?

3. Is the product affordable?

Hypothesis

Based from the different questions posited in the study the hypothesis

deduced were:

1. Efficiency is the quality acceptability of the product.

2. The raw materials used for the product are easily found at home,

recycled materials.

3. The product is affordable.

Significance of the Study

Nowadays, the problem in trash and sanitation of the country is very

alarming, so the researchers come-up with the idea of using renewable materials

of a toy car for an electronic dustpan. For future researchers, the study can be

further developed by adding some features that makes the tidy dustpan more

efficient.

The tidy dustpan has important implication in solving a problem or need of

the country like environmental recovery, sanitation and health conditions. It also

helps the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” campaign that aims to use invaluable object

into something new.

housewives, out of school youth, jobless adults and unemployed graduates as

their livelihood project for extra income and improves quality of life.

More so, Tidy dustpan is relevant to the government’s thrust on solid waste

management in making waste into something valuable and “trash turns to cash”.

Scope and Limitation

The study focuses on an electrically driven tidy dustpan made up of

recyclable materials. This study involves assembling, field work, testing and

observation. The study aims to produce an efficient household cleaning materials

which promotes efficiency and ease in terms of cleaning. Because of the

increasing number of trash, this study will help maintain the cleanliness of the

environment.

 Likewise, the study will be conducted only for a month. During the first two

weeks, the researchers will collect and gather the materials needed. After a week

researchers will start assembling the tidy dustpan. Observation and recording of

data will take place once a week.

Definition of Key Terms

Acceptability- The definition of the term acceptability is to receive

willingly and to agree on something (Webster’s Dictionary). In this paper the term

acceptability is the quality of the product accepted.

Assembling- The definition of the term assembling is to group something

or to gather together (Concise Dictionary). In this paper the term assembling is

the putting together of parts, as a complex gadget.

 Affordable- The definition of the term affordable is to be able to meet the

expense of, to finish supply (Random House Webster’s Dictionary). In this paper

the term affordable is something easily grab or intake for the product.

Efficiency- The definition of the term efficiency is working well with little

waste or functioning effectively with the least effort or resources (Random House

Webster’s Dictionary). In this paper the term efficiency is the effectiveness of the

product in terms of its quality.

Raw materials- The definition of the term raw materials is not processed,

finished or refined. It is unnaturally or indelicate (Random House Webster’s

Dictionary). In this paper the term raw materials are the materials that the

researchers used for the product such as an materials that are easily found at

home, recyclable materials.
