1.0 WORKING METHOD AND APPLICATION

The FINCKH horizontal screen is a pressure screen that works

with perforated as well as slotted screen baskets.

The FINCKH horizontal screen is installed in a closed system.

The material to be sorted is fed tangentially to the inlet chamber

and flows from there into the gap between the rotor jacket and
the screen basket. In this area the material is divided into
accept stock and reject. The accept stock flows centrifugally
through the screen basket openings. Dirt particles, specks and
the like are transported by the rotor on the inside of the screen
basket towards the drive side and there they are discharged
by the reject outlet.

The closed rotor allows for small wing thicknesses, which has a
very positive effect on the pulsations without affecting the
cleaning performance.

The FINCKH horizontal screen is a very adaptable screening machine.

It achieves excellent screening results for paper and board based
on waste paper, for medium-fine, wood pulp or woodfree papers
to fine and ultra-fine papers, rags, linters, synthetic fibre
materials as well as coarse and heavily beaten materials.

The FINCKH horizontal screen is used wherever in the stock

consistency range up to max. about 2% a perfect screening has to
be achieved by a pressure screen.
Its field of application is the final screening of paper, board,
tissue and pulp machines.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 3

It is also most suitable for fine screening in waste paper stock

preparation plants and de-inking units.

The desired screening purity is achieved by selecting the appropriate

hole size or slot width for the stock in question.

The manufacture of perforated and slotted, thick-walled screening

plates is a specialty of M/S HERMANN FINCKH. This ensures a
prompt delivery of the screen baskets best suited for the
material ratios.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 4

2.0 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The FINCKH horizontal screen consists of a thick-walled, welded

housing made of stainless steel, one side of which is closed with
a hinged cover. The screen basket is removed and installed on this
side. The opposite side is closed with the bearing bracket. The
bearing bracket contains the shaft seal, the water-protected
roller bearings and the rotor shaft (drive shaft). A gland seal
is used as the shaft seal.
The rotor is removed and installed on the side of the bearing
bracket.

The inlet, the outlet of accept stock and the outlet of reject
are mounted tangentially on the housing. The outlet flange for
accept stock is provided with a centering ring for a smooth
transition to the counter flange. On the side of accept stock
a vent is provided at the top of the housing.

There is a nozzle on the reject side for adding dilution water

if necessary (blind closed on delivery).

The drive is made by an electrical motor construction type B 3

and a V-belt drive.

The motor is seated on an adjustable motor plate.

The rotor shaft is mounted in grease-lubricated roller bearings.

A self-aligning roller bearing is mounted on the loose bearing

side and an inclined ball bearing is used on the side of the
fixed bearing.

The roller bearings are lubricated with grease and are provided
with wear-free labyrinth seals.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 5

Vane rotor
The rotor consists of a welded cylindrical body, the hub of
which is seated on the drive shaft. On the cylindrical part
of the rotor the cleaning blades are fixed.

Screen basket
The screen basket is horizontally installed, it is secured
against rotation by a conical retaining ring.

Screen baskets with perforation or slots are used. The removal

and installation of the screen basket is made by means of a
device.

Lubrication
The grease nipples for the two roller bearings of the shaft are
located on the bearing bracket. Each bearing has its own grease
nipple. The grease nipples are easily accessible and visible
from the outside.

Pressure manometer
The two pressure manometers for inlet and outlet pressure are
supplied separately and are only screwed into the openings
provided for them at the inlet and outlet chambers after
installation of the FINCKH horizontal screen.
The diaphragms of the pressure manometers are very sensitive and
therefore must not be mechanically touched. Do not remove the
protective cover until shortly before insertion!
Pressure manometers with glycerin inflation must be relieved of
pressure before commissioning (remove red cap).

Pressure manometer for pressure-relief valve

The pressure manometer for the pressure-relief valve is
supplied loose and is screwed into the threaded hole R 1/4"
provided for this purpose at the valve housing during
installation.

Motor
The motor data can be learned from the order confirmation.

3.0 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

A. Weight

a) The tare weight of the FINCKH horizontal screen can be

learned from the delivery note.

b) The static load (screen filled with stock) is noted

in the foundation plan.

c) Dynamic loads do not occur.

B. Transport

The FINCKH horizontal screen is usually transported in a

box or in a crate (possibly on planks). The box or crate
contains the complete FINCKH horizontal screen with
drive.

C. Installation planning

The following points must be observed when installing the

FINCKH horizontal screen:

a) For a general drawing with nozzle position and

connection dimensions see appendix.

b) The foundation is executed according to the

enclosed foundation plan.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 7

c) Hoist for maintenance purposes, for lifting capacity

see general drawing. If possible, install a chain-
driven trolley with a working area that covers the
entire length of the machine including the maintenance
areas (for removing the bearing with rotor and the
screen basket).
The hoist must be placed exactly perpendicular and in
parallel with the centre axle of the horizontal screen.

d) A throttle valve has to be fitted at the outlet of the

accept stock of the FINCKH horizontal screen which is
used to adjust the back pressure in the FINCKH
horizontal screen. In addition the throttle valve is
used to regulate the stock dilution when the constant
system is closed. If the distance between the FINCKH
horizontal screen and the headbox is very short, a valve
design must be used which does not create an uneven
(asymmetrical) flow. If possible, use orifice valves.
The pipe for accept stock must always be laid with a
gradient. If several units are connected in parallel, a
throttle valve in the common pipe for accept stock is
sufficient.
With sufficient back pressure (see section 8) the
throttle valve can be omitted. FINCKH should be
consulted in this matter.

An orifice valve is to be used as reject valve.

The reject pipes of several units connected in parallel

must not be joined. It must be possible to control the
reject at each unit separately.

e) For the proper function of the FINCKH horizontal

screen it is necessary that the machine is always
filled with stock.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 8

The ventilation system must always be open so that no

air cushion can arise in the FINCKH horizontal screen.
The result of the air cushion would be a displacement
of the screen basket. To prevent this, all stock pipes
at the FINCKH horizontal screen must be laid above
the height of the machine.

f) A discharge valve must be fitted at the lowest point

of the reject pipe to discharge the reject and clean
the FINCKH horizontal screen. The inlet and outlet
chambers are emptied via the cleaning valves fitted at
the bottom of the housing.

It is advisable to provide a flushing water connection

(approx. 2") between the flange for accept stock and
the shut-off valve in the pipe after the screen. It
must be possible to flush out the screen - against
the direction of the stock.

If this connection should disturb, flushing water can

also be introduced via the ventilation connection. For
this purpose insert a T-piece instead of the ventilation
valve with one valve each for ventilation and flushing
water supply.

The housing of the FINCKH horizontal screen is equipped

with a ventilation valve to which a hose can be
connected. This ventilation pipe can be led, for
example, to the white water or to the chest for accept
stock. The ventilation pipes of several units connected
in parallel must not be joined.

g) The FINCKH horizontal screen requires sealing water

(fresh water) for sealing at the gland, pressure at
least 0,5 bar above the maximum stock pressure.
The pressure-relief valve supplied must be installed near
the screen at the fresh water inlet.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 9

It is important that the sealing water is already at the

gland before the gland is filled with medium.

To ensure that the sealing water is open, it is

recommended to install a solenoid valve immediately
upstream of the pressure-relief valve. The solenoid valve
must be interlocked with the FINCKH horizontal screen
motor in such a way that the motor can only be started
when the solenoid valve is open (install a flow indicator
sight glass for visual control if necessary). A constant
pressure and flow must be ensured in the sealing water
pipe.

h) The motor of the upstream stock pump must be

interlocked with the FINCKH horizontal screen motor
in such a way that:

1) the stock pump can only be started when the

FINCKH horizontal screen is switched on.

2) in case of failure of the FINCKH horizontal

screen the stock pump switches off.

D. Assembly

a) Checking the foundation.

b) Remove the transport box or planks and place the

screen on the foundation.

c) Screw the 5 supplied foundation screws at the

foot of the screen as well as at the support of
the bearing bracket, set down and align the
machine.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 10

d) Encase the foundation and grout the foundation screws

only up to the lower edge of the foot of the FINCKH
horizontal screen.

e) The installation of the piping and electrical

connections is carried out by the workshop of the
paper mill. The internal welds and flange junctions of
the piping - especially between the screen and the
headbox - must be executed accurately so that no
lumps can arise.

The pipe connections to the FINCKH horizontal screen must

be adapted. See note on general drawing "Adapt counter
flanges!”

f) Once the piping system has been fully assembled and

thoroughly flushed, the pressure manometers must be
installed. Screw blind flanges on the pressure
manometer opening for flushing. This measure serves to
protect the diaphragms of the pressure manometers, as
heavy parts from the piping often damage the
diaphragms during flushing.
The foundation screws must be tightened and the rotational
direction of the motor must be checked.
Clockwise direction of rotation when looking at the cover
of the FINCKH horizontal screen.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 11

4.0 OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

The housing of the FINCKH horizontal screen is designed for a

feed pressure of up to max. 7,0 bar. The pressure difference
between the pressure manometers at the inlet and the outlet of
accept stock depends on the throughput, the stock consistency
and the free screening surface of the screen basket. The
pressure difference is max. 0,5 bar.

For an impeccable operation of the horizontal screen, it

is necessary that the machine is well de-aerated during
operation and that sufficient reject is removed.

a) Reject

Continuous reject removal:

approx. 10-20% depending on the degree of contamination
adjustable by orifice valve.

Re-screening:
Today, re-screening is usually made by FINCKH vibrating
screens or FINCKH final stage screens.
Especially when using narrow slot widths in the screen
basket of the FINCKH horizontal screen or when screening
large quantities of stock, the reject of the primary stage
can be re-screened in a smaller FINCKH horizontal screen -
as a secondary stage. Thus a screening capacity is
achieved which is economical and provides the highest
purity of the stock.

b) Bearings

The roller bearings must be checked for smooth running

during operation.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 12

c) Lubrication

1. The following lubrication points are available:

2 Roller bearings of the drive shaft.
There is a separate grease nipple for each bearing on the
bearing bracket.
The bearings are filled with grease on delivery. The
bearings must be re-lubricated before start-up.

The following grease was used as initial filling:

Spectron FO 20

Saponification type: Calcium complex

Drop point: approx. 280 °C
SKF test run passed
Service temperature range with
regular re-lubrication: -30 °C up to +260 °C

The bearings must be re-lubricated once a week, approx.

40-50 g grease is required per bearing. The type of
grease or saponification must not be changed for re-
lubrication.

If it is necessary to change the grease type, remove

the bearings, wash them out, remove the old grease from
the lubrication pipes and fill them with the new grease
type.

2. The ball bearings of the motor have to be lubricated

according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 13

d) V-belt drive

The V-belts must be uniformly tensioned; they must not

flutter, otherwise they will wear out quickly! Only belts
of exactly the same length should be used.
Avoid moisture - danger of slipping!

e) Stuffing box and sealing water

The stuffing-box packing can be adjusted from outside

during operation.
The purpose of the sealing water is to prevent fibres from
entering the stuffing-box packing. Otherwise, there is the
danger of rapid wear-off of the packing and the shaft
protecting sleeve.
Fresh water must be used as sealing water. The sealing water
pressure must be at least 0,5 bar above the pressure in the
horizontal screen (see section 3 , C-g).

f) Cleaning

The machine should be kept in a clean condition. Clean

the machine thoroughly inside and outside at
standstill. See section 5, last paragraph.

g) Screen basket change and cleaning

The screen basket is fixed in the housing by a conical

clamping ring.
After swinging off the housing cover the disassembly
device of the screen basket (see drawing in appendix) is
screwed on the reinforcing ring of the screen basket and
the screws in the clamping ring are loosened.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 14

The clamping ring is held in place on the screen basket

disassembly device at the same time with the two withdrawer
screws, so that the screen basket and clamping ring can be
removed together.

In order to be able to suspend the screen basket

disassembly device with screen basket exactly in the
centre of gravity, the suspension eye on the
disassembly device is executed adjustable.
The screen basket should be extended axially from the
housing at a slow, steady speed.
See section 3 , C-c.
The screen basket must not touch the rotor.

After each change of the screen basket the chamber for

accept stock must be flushed with water. Thus any deposits
or impurities are removed which have passed from the
reject chamber into the chamber for accept stock.

For cleaning the screen basket section 5, last

paragraph, must be observed.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 15

5.0 COMMISSIONING AND SHUTDOWN

1. Flush the FINCKH horizontal screen with water.

2. Open the inlet valve.

3. Open the outlet valve of accept stock approx. 2-3 cm.

4. Open the de-aeration completely.

5. Open the reject valve approx. 1,5-2 cm.

6. Fill the FINCKH horizontal screen with water until it

comes out at the de-aeration pipe.

7. Switch on the motor of the FINCKH horizontal screen

(do not switch on the motor until the machine is
completely filled with water).

8. Check the sealing water at the machine (pressure

indicator, flow indicator, see section 3 , C-g).

9. Switch on the stock pump and fill the system with water
(see section 3 , C-h).

10. Slowly feed the stock until the required stock consistency
and throughput are achieved. Adjust the counterpressure
and quantity with the valve for accept stock.

11. Open the reject valve sufficiently. The amount of reject

must be discharged in such a way that the impurities to be
removed do not accumulate inside the screen basket
(danger of clogging).
( e.g. with waste paper 10-20% related to the feed quantity)

12. When there is no air in the machine anymore, the de-

aeration pipe can be throttled down to approx. 30 l/min.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 16

Shutdown

When the FINCKH horizontal screen is shut down, stop the stock
feed and continue with water until the entire system is free of
fibre stock.
Open the reject valve completely. Then switch off the stock pump
and the FINCKH horizontal screen (do not operate the FINCKH
horizontal screen in an unfilled state). Open the cleaning valves
for the inlet and outlet chamber as well as at the reject pipe
for emptying. Swing off the cover of the FINCKH horizontal
screen. Flush out the machine and the screen basket.

If the screen basket is very dirty, it must be removed and

cleaned with a high-pressure sprayer. The most suitable method is
to use a spray gun with steam injector. With the mixture of water
and steam even small plastic specks in the slots are loosened
and blown out by pressure.
Required pressure: 60 up to 90 bar

Lime deposit in the slots or perforations can be removed by

brushing off with highly diluted hydrochloric acid.
Do not use steel wire brushes!
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 17

the reinforcing ring of the screen basket (pos. 1).

3) Unscrew the screen basket clamping ring (pos. 3), draw it

off and tighten it on the screen basket disassembly
device.

4) Pull the screen basket out of the housing by using a hoist.

5) The mounting of the screen basket is executed in

reverse order.

Very important!
The fixing screws for the screen basket clamping ring
(pos. 3) must be tightened with a torque wrench.

Required torque: 35,5 Nm

(used screw quality A4-70).

Attention:
The disassembly device was executed in such a way that the
centre of gravity of the screen basket can be set by adjusting
the suspension eye (see section 4-g).
The screen basket must not touch the rotor during removal and
installation. Place the screen basket only on suitable wooden
prism-shaped platforms (no edges).
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 21

Rotor change

see drawing no. 419-168

1) Remove the screen basket (see ”Screen basket

change”).

2) Remove the belt guard, take off the V-belt and the motor.

3) Unscrew the fixing screws at the support of the bearing

bracket.

4) Loosen the screw connection between the bearing bracket

and the housing. Unscrew the sealing water pipe.

5) Pull the bearing bracket with attached narrow V-belt

pulley, rotor and rotor cover out of the housing using
a hoist.

6) Unscrew the rotor cover. In the flange of the cover there

are 2 threads on the front side and 1 radial thread for
screwing eyebolts on for attaching it on a hoist.

7) Remove the tightening nuts and the clamping cover from

the hub.

8) Turn the bearing by 90° (place it vertically) and set

it down on wooden planks with the narrow V-belt pulley
(do not tilt it over the narrow V-belt pulley).

9) Pull off the rotor. For attaching the rotor on a hoist

there are 2 cams with threads on the threaded flange of
the rotor cover for eyebolts or for screwing on a release
mechanism. Place the rotor only on suitable wooden prism-
shaped platforms.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 22

10) The installation is executed in reverse order.

Before installing the rotor clean the shaft journal and
grease it with a lubricant paste (preventing it from
fretting corrosion).
It is also important to ensure that the O-rings in the
shaft protecting sleeve (pos. 8) and in the spacer
sleeve (pos. 15) are correctly inserted.
Before screwing on the rotor cover check the round cord
seal for usability.
The bearing surfaces at the housing and bearing bracket
must be cleaned of old sealing compound and coated with
new sealing compound, the round cord seal must also be
checked for usability.

11) ATTENTION - very important:

see drawing no. 419-169

The rotor is connected with the shaft by means of an

adjusting spring axially secured by a tightening
disc and screw.

The screw connection from the drive shaft to the rotor hub is
secured via the screw length in connection with a certain
screw pre-tensioning force.
This means that the hexagon nuts must necessarily be
tightened with a torque wrench.

Required torque: 110 Nm

The hexagon nuts used are special FINCKH nuts. Normal

stainless steel nuts must not be used.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 23

Change of the shaft protecting sleeve

see drawing no. 419-168.

1) Remove the rotor (see "Rotor change").

2) Remove the adjusting spring from the shaft.

3) Unscrew and remove the gland (pos. 6). Pull out the
packing rings (pos. 7, 4 pieces).

4) Pull off the spacer sleeve (pos. 15) and the shaft
protecting sleeve (pos. 8).

5) Mount the new shaft protecting sleeve and insert

the new packing rings.

The assembly is executed in reverse order.

6) Attention:
An O-ring is glued into the shaft protecting sleeve and
the spacer sleeve. This O-ring must necessarily be
available and usable during assembly, otherwise the
rotor will fill with stock and water. The shaft piece must
be provided with lubricant paste (to prevent fretting
corrosion).
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 24

Change of the stuffing box packing

see drawing no. 419-168

1) Remove the gland (pos. 6).

2) Remove the used stuffing box packing (pos. 7).

3) Clean the stuffing box chamber and the shaft protecting

sleeve thoroughly.

4) Cut new stuffing box packing rings according to the

manufacturer's instructions (length, cut ends).

5) Install the ring cuttings with the cut ends shifted by

approx. 90° so that the cut end of the last ring on the
gland side is at the top as far as possible.

Each ring should be inserted individually into the stuffing

box chamber with the cut ends first.

Each single ring must be sealed; do not use any sharp

objects for this purpose, as there is the danger of
damaging the protecting sleeve and deforming the packing
material.

6) After inserting the rings press them on with the

gland and tighten the nuts by hand.

7) During start-up it is essential to ensure that there

is sufficient leakage.

During the feeding process of at least 15 - 30 minutes

the minimum leakage must be adjusted by tightening the
gland nut steadily in steps of 1/6 of a turn.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 25

1) Pull the complete bearing with narrow V-belt pulley, rotor

and cover out of the housing. Dismantle the rotor. (See
"Change the rotor").

2) Dismantle the stuffing box (remove adjusting spring, stuffing

box gland (pos. 6), spacer sleeve (pos. 15), shaft protecting
sleeve (pos. 8), stuffing box housing).

3) Pull the narrow V-belt pulley off the shaft. Remove the
adjusting spring from the shaft.

4) Remove the labyrinth rings on both sides (loosen the grub

screw).

5) Dismantle the lubrication pipe on the side of the fixed

bearing.

6) Unscrew the cover of the fixed bearing (pos. 1) and the

cover of the loose bearing (pos. 5).

7) Remove the retaining rings from the fixed and loose

bearing.

8) Pull the shaft together with the fixed bearing (pos 2,

steep-angle ball bearing) out of the bearing bracket.

9) Pull the loose bearing (pos. 4, self-aligning roller

bearing) out of the bearing bracket.

10) Clean the bearing bracket and the shaft.

11) Slide the new bearing on the side of the fixed bearing
(steep-angle ball bearing) of the shaft and insert the
retaining ring. The bearing must be fitted in such a way
that the filler grooves for the balls are located on the
shaft shoulder.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 26

12) Apply grease on bearing and bearing fit. Push the shaft
with the attached fixed bearing into the bearing bracket
from the front side until the roller bearing rests against
the collar of the bracket.

13) Fit the cover of the fixed bearing.

14) Apply grease on the loose bearing and the bearing fit and
push the bearing into the bearing bracket.

15) Insert the retaining ring.

16) Fit the cover of the loose bearing.

17) Push the labyrinth rings for fixed and loose bearing on
the shaft and screw them tight.

18) Fit the lubrication pipe.

19) The installation of the stuffing box housing with the

shaft protecting sleeve as well as the complete
assembly of the bearing and installation of the rotor is
executed in reverse order as described above.

Especially the references at:

a) Change of rotor, point 10) and 11)

b) Change of shaft protecting sleeve, point 6)

have to be observed.
Hor.Sort.Mod.3-St.-68.076 27

8.0 PRESSURE RATIOS AND PRESSURE MONITORING

The housing of the FINCKH horizontal screen is designed for an

inlet pressure of max. 7,0 bar. The outlet pressure should be
min. 0,5 bar. The pressure loss in the horizontal screen is
approx. 0,1 – 0,5 bar.

For the design of the pump the geodetic heights as well as the
losses in the pipes for inlet, accept stock and reject must
also be taken into account.

The differential pressure at the screen baskets between the inlet

and the outlet of accept stock must not exceed 0,6 bar. If, for
installation reasons, there is the possibility that this value
will be exceeded, a differential pressure measurement is
recommended.

If the max. admissible differential pressure which has to be

set or the pressure at which the horizontal screen achieves the
max. throughput is exceeded, the stock pump switches off.

If several units are connected in parallel, it is sufficient to

install the pressure transmitters in the common inlet pipe
respectively in the outlet pipe for accept stock.
