PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
O
n behalf of the Board of Directors of the International
Clarinet Association, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome
you to ClarinetFest® 2022! I hope that this incredible
week of live music and events will be a wonderful time
of inspiration and connection with the clarinet community for you,
both musically and personally.
The ICA is deeply grateful to our Artistic Director, Christy
Banks, for her vision and dedication to the creation of this
conference, and to her outstanding Artistic Leadership Team,
Josh Anderson, Soo Goh, and Jessica Lindsey. It is no small feat to
present the first in-person ICA conference in three years and they
have done an amazing job, as you will see in the exciting and diverse
program this week. There is something for everyone!
ClarinetFest® would not be possible without the generous support from our sponsors,
exhibitors, vendors, and industry professionals. We are especially grateful to the sponsors
of ClarinetFest® 2022, including at the Altissimo level: Buffet Crampon, D’Addario
Woodwinds, F. Arthur Uebel, Henri Selmer Paris, Rovner Products Inc., Yamaha
Corporation of America; at the Clarion level: ALRY Publications, Backun Musical Services,
Chedeville, Lisa’s Clarinet Shop, Royal Global, RZ Clarinets, Silverstein Works; at the
Chalumeau level, B. Corbin Clarinet Products, Midwest Musical Imports; and at the
Supporting level: University of Nevada Reno, Steinway Piano Gallery Reno. We also want to
thank Royal Global for donating the clarinet prize for the 2022 Young Artist Competition.
ClarinetFest® 2022 will feature talented artists from around the globe with an array of
performances, lectures, pedagogy sessions, master classes, and many other exciting events.
A very special thank you to all the artists who have come to perform and share their talents
with us. What a joy it will be to attend so many live performances! Thank you also to our
exhibitors who will have the latest developments in instruments, equipment, products, and
sheet music from around the world. I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity
to attend concerts, recitals, and sessions, as well as to try instruments and equipment. A
wonderful collection of all things clarinet!
We are sure that you will enjoy the beauty and ease of the Peppermill Hotel, as well as
the warm and welcoming feeling of our community coming together again after so long.
I want to invite you to join us for our annual business meeting on Saturday at noon, as
well as the ICA Awards ceremony on Saturday at 6:30 right before the Reno Philharmonic
orchestra concert. I would also like to invite you to attend the ICA President’s Reception
on Wednesday evening at 9:30 in the Edge Nightclub, immediately following the opening
concert with the USAF Band of the Golden West. We will welcome three new Honorary
Members this year, Franklin Cohen, Paquito D’Rivera, and Ted Johnson; honor newly
inducted ICA Legends, Kalmen Opperman, Artie Shaw, and David Hite; and give special
recognition to two of our Honorary Members from last year, Robert Spring and Charles
West, as well as past honorary membership inductees, past presidents, 2022 sponsors, and
our Artistic Team. So much to celebrate!
We hope that you enjoy your time in Reno and that you make many wonderful
memories and new friends during ClarinetFest® 2022. Thank you so much for your
continuing support of the ICA!
Sincerely yours,
Denise Gainey

CALL IT IN THE CLAR: A PRO’S GUIDE TO TECHNICAL CLARINET TERMS
Presenter: Miles DeCastro
Clarinet. Mouthpiece. Reed. Virtually every member of the clarinet community knows the definition of these terms.
But what about some of the more technical terms we encounter with some frequency? In an ideal world, all clarinetists
would be able to communicate with each other using a standardized set of terms. Such a clarinet-specific vocabulary
does exist, but it has been bastardized through lack of understanding and the perpetuation of misinformation.
Undercutting, facing, beveling, pinning, bushing, pads vs. corks vs. felts, and proper key nomenclature are just some of
the terms Miles DeCastro and Katie Kendall will define and demonstrate in this clinic.

PLAN B í: USING YOUR PERFORMANCE SKILLS TO SUCCEED IN ALTERNATIVE CAREERS
Presenter: Lowell Weiner
Clarinet performance majors at universities or conservatories often have the goal of landing a position with a
prestigious orchestra or music school faculty. Do the math! Not everybody is going to land that dream orchestral or
college teaching job. It’s wise to have a Plan B, or in the case of clarinetists, a Plan B í. “Plan B í: Using Your Performance
Skills to Succeed in Alternative Careers” will discuss how Lowell Weiner transitioned from clarinet performance to
a successful business career. The presentation will highlight the skills musicians possess (self-discipline, teamwork,
listening, etc.) that make it possible to succeed in business or alternative careers. The presentation will also describe
how you can pursue your passion for clarinet and music, while making a living in other fields.

PED NEW STANDARD REPERTOIRE: CLARINET WORKS OF HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED
COMPOSERS AND THE RESOURCES TO FIND THEM
Presenter: Vanessa Davis
We have entered a new age of curiosity when it comes to inclusion of works written by composers from historically
underrepresented groups of people. In omitting these works, we are ignoring a vast body of thoughtful, well-
composed, and beautiful music from our studios and stages. To expand the standard repertoire of the clarinet, we need
to begin teaching these works; to do that, we must first discover them for ourselves. In this presentation I discuss a
number works that could teach different styles, but written by composers from historically underrepresented groups
and provide methods on how to discover this new body of repertoire.

PED PROFESSORSHIP IN CLARINET AND THE LASTING INFLUENCE OF STEIN, STUBBINS, AND
VOXMAN
Presenter: Jenna McCall
The aim of this lecture is to provide further examination into the American school of clarinet playing by discussing three
of the first generation of American-born clarinet professors and their contributions to pedagogy: Keith Stein, William
Stubbins and Himie Voxman. These teachers helped pioneer the structure of clarinet teaching in America and published
numerous writings on clarinet fundamentals. Each dedicated themselves to the advocacy of music in the university
setting. This lecture will compare and analyze the teaching philosophies and methodologies of Stein, Stubbins and
Voxman in order to demonstrate their legacies and influence on clarinetists and professors today.

THE MAKING OF THE EP “IRIS”
Presenters: Ford Fourqurean and Erich Barganier
Erich Barganier and Ford Fourqurean created their electroacoustic duo EP Iris between August 2020 and February 2021
collaborating remotely. Using Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), digital processing, and collaborative composing, each
wrote a solo work for the other to play, in addition to a duo composition, combining clarinet, electric guitar, violin,
Ableton, supercollider, MUGIC gestural controller, and other studio techniques into a vibrant, glitchy soundscape. This
lecture recital explores their remote collaborative process, equipment and techniques, co-composition, and ways for
clarinetists to incorporate these methods into future projects. The lecture recital features an eight-minute performance
of the following works.

PED CLARINET REPERTOIRE DATABASE: RESOURCES FOR GENDER DIVERSITY IN RECITAL
PROGRAMMING
Presenters: Anoushka Divekar and Maggie Greenwood
Clarinet Repertoire is an ongoing project meant to promote gender diversity in clarinet recital programming. This
project started as a dissertation narrowly focused on unaccompanied works written for the clarinet by womxn
composers since 1989. It has now expanded to include more composers with a range of gender identities and an
expansion of instrumentation. The team will discuss the creation of the database, and how they use the database in
their performance and pedagogy. Developments of the project have included commissions, performances of works on
recitals, and exposure for composers.

THE BAROQUE PERIOD COMES FULL CIRCLE
Presenters: Dr. Andrea Vos-Rochefort and Dr. Ann Fronckowiak
The clarinet missed the heyday of the baroque period but we don’t have to miss out on the aesthetics or general know-how
thanks to John Harbison’s Concerto for oboe and clarinet and strings. While the harmonies are decidedly progressive, the
rhythm and affect of each movement are inspired by the baroque genre and this is a great starting point for clarinetists to
begin to explore and learn about decorations, performance considerations, and historic elements. Dr. Ann Fronckowiak and
Dr. Andrea Vos-Rochefort will present on these elements and their relation to the performance.

REALITY CHECK: UPDATING YOUR CLARINET SKILLS CLASS FOR THE REAL WORLD
Presenters: Dr. Elizabeth Schultz, Alyssa Arkin, and Rebecca True
Music education students displaying performance skills does not mean that they have acquired teaching skills. With
perspectives from current private studio, public school, and higher education teachers, participants will learn what
skills are most practical to be better teachers of the clarinet. Participants will identify the disconnect between skills
class and the realities of the band hall, learn activities they can immediately incorporate into their clarinet skills class,
and have practical action steps on how to build those skills in their future music education students.

PED RIGHT HAND PAIN: HOW CHANGES TO THUMB POSITION CAN PREVENT
AND HEAL OVERUSE INJURY
Presenter: Dr. Suzanne Tirk
This workshop is designed for clarinetists that have experienced right hand pain/overuse injuries and for those
clarinetists that are seeking ways to relax the hand, thus preventing injury. We will examine how repositioning the
angle of the right-hand thumb makes a significant impact on the relaxation and function of the right hand. Having
suffered from a right-hand overuse injury herself, presenter Suzanne Tirk has used this technique to help students
suffering from right-hand overuse injury, as well as heal her own injury.

CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE MUSIC EDUCATION
Presenter: Brandilyn Davidson
Most teachers in public education have never received training in multicultural music or culturally responsive pedagogy.
This lecture is intended to bring awareness to the cultural competency gap that exists between classically trained music
educators and their multicultural students, and to provide immediate solutions from Ms. Davidson’s multicultural music
education book, “A World of Music for Beginning Band”. In the book, Ms. Davidson provides easy arrangements of
indigenous folk songs from around the world, along with culturally responsive lesson plans. Participants will also receive a
curated list of resources that will help guide them toward becoming a more culturally responsive music educator. (www.

SELECTING SOLOS FOR SUCCESS: TIPS FOR MATCHING STUDENTS AND REPERTOIRE
Presenters: Danielle Woolery & Shannon McDonald
It can be difficult to select solo repertoire to ensure student success as a novice teacher. While it can be tempting to
teach only the pieces that you have previously played, there is a wide array of literature tailored for performers of every
level. Join Woolery and McDonald as they discuss factors to consider when matching students with pedagogically
appropriate repertoire. A detailed handout and list of resources will be provided for all participants. Further materials
will be covered to encourage programming of pieces by traditionally underrepresented composers.

H&W FINDING YOUR FEET: A BALANCING APPROACH TO FREEDOM
Presenters: Jackie McIlwain with Shawn Copeland
In this presentation we plan to discuss a method we have designed using Body Mapping principles that will allow
clarinetists to feel grounded while performing. We will introduce balance points throughout the body that we can
attend to in order to maintain attention from within the body as we play to significantly decrease tension, maintain
freedom throughout the body, and express music without physical hindrance.

PED CADENZAS, EINGÄNGE, AND MORE: IMPROVISATION IN THE CLASSICAL ERA
Presenter: Nancy Williams
Woodwind improvisational techniques of the Classical era include ornamentation, diminutions, Eingänge, and
cadenzas. To successfully implement these techniques in Classical repertoire performed today, musicians need to know
why, where, when, and how to incorporate them. Not only do analytical procedures aid in this process, but so do aural
skills and an understanding of the historical and cultural context. Modern soloists, despite their fears and discomfort,
should learn to incorporate improvisation to stay true to the Classical zeitgeist, to fully appreciate the music, and to
better connect to their audiences by creating a more engaging performance.

PED DEMYSTIFYING MUSICALITY
Presenter: Amy McCann
Presenting a thoughtful, confident, and musical performance is a goal for which musicians of every level strives.
However, attaining this particular aspiration can be difficult because the intangible concept of musicality is tricky
to approach in all aspects of performance. Students especially tend to come to lessons and present either a blank
slate with little to no phrasing, or they play in such a way that seems to ask, “Is this right?” Through my dissertation
research on The Ploger MethodTM developed by pedagogue Marianne Ploger and my own teaching experiences, I have
developed a process through which students can play a more involved role in their own practice and performance by
giving them the tools to make more informed musical decisions. This comprehensive knowledge and independence
gives them a greater sense of ownership over their presentation of a work and eliminates the guesswork many often
feel in attempting to generate expressive musicality. This presentation will focus on introducing the process and
demonstrating how to equip students with the specific tools needed to make informed musical decisions on their own
in the practice room for greater improvement between lessons. By examining metric, melodic, and harmonic elements
in a specific order and understanding how they interact in real-time, students of every level can gain an in-depth
understanding of each piece and present confident and intentional interpretations in every performance.

CLC 3 EXPERIENCING BREAKTHROUGHS: GUIDED VISUALIZATION FOR CLARINETISTS
Presenter: Alessandra White
Performance Anxiety is a drab, grey space where the two worlds of music and stress intersect. It lacks vitality,
drains us of joy, robs us of inspiration and, if left unchecked, can stunt or even end careers. Stage Fright, as it’s more
commonly called, is a term no musician wants to talk about. Traditionally it been treated with a variety of talk therapies
& medicines. Yet, some still suffer. In this session, you will find a “hidden in plain sight” tool that’s close at hand,
whenever you need it. With practice, it bolsters confidence, restores playing enjoyment, and leads to breakthroughs.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR CLARINET AND EFFECTS PEDALS
Presenter: Patrick Englert
For many clarinetists, utilizing electronics such as effects pedals ends at simply plugging in the equipment and playing.
However, with some knowledge on the functionality of such devices one can extract unique and novel sounds beyond
just “plugging in.” This presentation will focus on some of the more advanced techniques for performing with effects
pedals and how to better interact between the clarinet and effects pedals. Due to this, the presentation will be geared
toward experienced effects users rather than beginners. Topics will include advanced techniques utilizing delay, pitch-
shifting, and distortion effects with the clarinet.

TURKISH CLASSICAL REPERTOIRE FOR CLARINET
Presenter: Dr. Sarah Jaegers
This presentation explores the works of Turkish composer Ahmet Adnan Saygun (1907–1991) and his American
student, Edward J. Hines (b. 1951). Saygun was a member of the Turkish Five, a conglomerate of composers who
pioneered the composition and performance of nationalist Turkish music and paved the way for future generations
of Turkish composers to create classical clarinet works. It highlights the ways in which Hines utilizes elements of the
traditional Turkish modal system (makamlar) and integrates and adapts them for performance by American students.

RECOGNIZING AND TREATING STRESS VELOPHARYNGEAL INSUFFICIENCY
Presenter: Kensley Behel
Many musicians experience performance-related health problems (PRHPs), most of which are preventable. Music
educators play a primary role in the prevention of PRHPs in the music classroom. Stress velopharyngeal insufficiency
(SVPI) in wind musicians is a condition affecting soft palate closure, causing air to escape through the nose while
blowing through the mouth into the instrument. Although SVPI is serious and potentially career ending for wind
instrumentalists, there are limited resources for music educators on SVPI prevalence, causes, management, and
prevention. This lecture will provide a comprehensive understanding of terminology, symptoms, prevalence, and
solutions equipping music educators to intervene more effectively in identifying SVPI in their classroom or studio.

HONORARY MEMBER BIOGRAPHIES
FRANKLIN COHEN
Principal Clarinet of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1976,
Franklin Cohen has distinguished himself as one of the
outstanding clarinetists of his generation. His playing has been
described as “hypnotic, impeccable, brilliant…with a vocal quality
that would be the envy of any singer.” He first gained international
recognition and acclaim when, at the age of 22, he became the
first clarinetist awarded First Prize at the International Munich
Competition (the other first prize that year went to soprano Jessye
Norman). Since then, Mr. Cohen has enjoyed an illustrious career
as soloist, recitalist, recording and chamber artist, pedagogue and
orchestral principal.
Since his first solo appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra in 1977, Mr. Cohen has
been featured as soloist in nearly 200 performances – at Severance Hall, Carnegie Hall,
Blossom Music Center, and on tour throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. In
1992, he recorded the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Orchestra and Christoph von
Dohnányi for Decca Records. Mr. Cohen is also the soloist in Debussy’s First Rhapsody
on a Deutsche Grammophon recording conducted by Pierre Boulez that won two Grammy
Awards in 1996, and on a Decca recording of the Brahms Clarinet Sonatas with pianist
Vladimir Ashkenazy.
With his daughter, violinist Diana Cohen, Franklin Cohen is the co-artistic director of the
critically acclaimed ChamberFest Cleveland, the first international summer chamber music
festival in Cleveland, which presented its inaugural season in 2012. ChamberFest’s huge
success has led to an expanded vision for growth locally and internationally.
Mr. Cohen’s professional music career was launched when Leopold Stokowski chose him as
principal clarinet of the American Symphony Orchestra.
As a recitalist and chamber artist, Mr. Cohen has participated in the Aspen, Blossom,
Casals, Marlboro, Santa Fe, and Sarasota music festivals. He has also been a featured
artist with many of the world’s leading chamber groups, including the Emerson, Guarneri,
Takács, Tokyo, Miro, Miami, Orion, Shostakovich, Cavani and Ysaÿe string quartets
and with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In addition, Mr. Cohen has
collaborated with leading artists including Emanuel Ax, Pinchas Zukerman, Mitsuko
Uchida, Richard Goode, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jessye Norman, Menahem Pressler and
Heidi Grant Murphy, among many others. Mr. Cohen has given countless master classes
and seminars at prestigious universities and conservatories throughout the world. His
former students hold principal positions in major orchestras in North America, Europe,
Mexico and Asia.
A passionate advocate of music education, Mr. Cohen founded and funded “The Concert
Club,” introducing young musicians to world class artists and performances at Severance
Hall.
Mr. Cohen’s children are both members of the Calgary Philharmonic, Diana serves as
concertmaster and Alexander is the principal timpanist.
While Paquito D’Rivera’s discography reflects a dedication and enthusiasm for Jazz,
Bebop and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are impressive. They include
solo performances with the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra,
the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore
Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. He
has also performed with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, the Costa Rica National
Symphony, the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, and the
St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra, among others. In his passion to bring Latin repertoire to
greater prominence, Mr. D’Rivera has successfully created, championed and promoted all
types of classical compositions, including his three chamber compositions recorded live
in concert with distinguished cellist Yo-Yo Ma in September 2003. The chamber work
“Merengue,” from that live concert at Zankel Hall, was released by Sony Records and
garnered Paquito his seventh GRAMMY as Best Instrumental Composition 2004.
Paquito D’Rivera is the author of two books: My Sax Life, published by Northwestern
University Press, and a novel, Oh, La Habana, published by MTeditores, Barcelona. He
is the recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award 2005 and the National Medal of the Arts
2005, as well as the Living Jazz Legend Award from the Kennedy Center, Washington,
D.C. in 2007. His numerous other honors include Doctorates Honoris Causa in Music
(from the Berklee School of Music in Boston, the University of Pennsylvania), and the Jazz
Journalist Association’s Clarinetist of the Year Award in both 2004 and 2006. The National
Endowment for the Arts website affirms “he has become the consummate multinational
ambassador, creating and promoting a cross-culture of music that moves effortlessly among
jazz, Latin, and Mozart.”

Established in 1825, Buffet Crampon is the acknowledged world leader in clarinet
manufacture, accounting for roughly 85% of all professional clarinet sales globally. The
brand was founded by Denis Buffet-Auger in Paris; Denis was succeeded by his son Jean-
Louis Buffet in 1830, who married Zoé Crampon in 1836, creating the iconic brand
we know today. Buffet Crampon cemented its position as the world’s leader in clarinet
innovation with the introduction of the landmark R13 model in 1955. Designed by
Robert Carrée, Buffet Crampon’s legendary acoustician, the R13 first introduced the poly-
cylindrical bore, now the standard for modern clarinet design and concept.
