READING PROGRAM FOR NANCAPIAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN

RESPONSE TO THE SDO I PANGASINAN’S PROJECT READ

TIMELINE OF THE PROGRAM: November 2021 to January 2022

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Reading is one of the most important skills in English that an individual must
need to master. This is indeed a tool subject for it is a prerequisite in understanding all
learning areas. It serves as a cornerstone for every student to learn other subjects
because students, who have difficulty in reading, may encounter also difficulties in all
learning areas.

In furtherance of the DepEd Memorandum No. 173, s.2019 entitled “ HAMON:

BAWAT BATA BUMABASA ( 3Bs Initiative ) this is to produce productive and
responsible citizens equipped with essential competencies and skills for lifelong
learning. To make every learner a proficient reader. Nancapian National High School
under the leadership of Dr. Jezebel B. Cayabyab instated a Reading Program to
address the reading difficulty, which has been a continuous issue.

The success of a public school nowadays can also be determined by its students’
proficiency in reading. Through the program entitled “Reading Ready Ka Program”
believes that a student who reads will be a student who leads. Nancapian NHS thought
that this program will be the solution to the biggest problem which beset the schools
nowadays; and that is the very poor reading comprehension skill of the students.
Moreover, the program aimed to introduce the concept of reading as a gateway to the
development of academic skills across all disciplines. In addition, the program will
equip the students to overcome the frustration and stress brought by learning difficulty
in understanding the content of digital and printed reading sources.

To attain the goal of the schools’ reading program, the students are engaged to
various reading activities such as: Bookmark making, “Donate A Book” (share the joy of
reading), DIY Home Reading Corner, Share Your Favorite Book to Read, and “Virtual
Reading Kumustahan”. These activities aimed to instill the love and importance of
reading to the students.
RATIONALE

Learning to read is particularly hard because there are many things to consider; the
phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling pattern, vocabulary, comprehension, etc.

Therefore, students need to develop understanding and skills to become independent,

enthusiastic readers.

To address the reading problems and to give assistance to the students with reading
difficulties, the reading teachers of Nancapian NHS devised a reading program which
aims to assess the students’ reading ability. How to help students with reading
problems is an ongoing process. Helping students who are struggling with reading
begins with understanding the difficulties that are hindering them. Through various
school reading activities, instructional devices, reading strategies and techniques we
can help improve the deteriorating reading proficiency of students nowadays.

The commitment of reading teachers and parents to instill the love and importance of
reading gives every student a head start on expanding their vocabulary and building
independence and self-confidence. It helps students learn to make sense not only of
the world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and of course,
imagination.

LEGAL BASIS

Pursuant Deped Memorandum No.173 s. 2019 otherwise known 3Bs Initiative-

Bawat Bata Bumabasa to produce productive and responsible citizens equipped with
essential competencies and skills for lifelong learning and to make every learner a
proficient reader.

EXPECTED OUTPUT

Learners under the program “Reading Ready Ka”, will learn to evaluate and
appreciate both printed and digital sources for their relevance, accuracy and
appropriateness for a variety of research purposes and topics.

unlocking learning opportunities to all students.
2. “Donate A Book” to share the joy of reading to underprivileged students.
3. Share Your Favorite Book to Read to promote awareness of the good
benefits of reading especially when shared to special people in life.
1. “Virtual Reading Kumustahan” for continuous reading review and
reading remediation at home during Covid-19 crisis.
2. Bookmark making engaged students in reading through its colorful
designs, and shapes. It has given every chapter of a book beauty and
value.
3. “DIY Home Reading Corner” was designed as additional reading
spaces outside the classrooms for students to enjoy and it is very useful
in promoting love for books and reading.
