Global Village
Global Village
FACULTY OF EDUCATION
QUESTION:
According to Chinnammai (2005), globalization is the process which has affected many areas of
human life and one of the prominent areas is that of education. In the twentieth century, the
education field has immensely expanded due to the emergence of educational institutes and
reforms from the west. This has been looked upon from both positive as well as negative aspects:
positive in the way that it has provided opportunities for many people of developing countries
(Uganda) to enhance their skills and raise their standards of education; and negative that people
do fear and feel insecure that it might ultimately lead to the creation of universal western society.
He continues to say that globalization of education has one aim that it intends to develop the
skills and capabilities of people receiving it. Higher education is pursuing the mechanisms and
structures in order to accommodate the students of different nationalities, culture and religious
backgrounds.
According to chadha (2009), he says that globalization can be seen as a process of increasing
interconnectedness between societies in such a way that events in one world have effect on
people in societies all-around. He continues to say that, a globalised world is one where political,
economic culture and social events become more interconnected and have an impact upon each
other in all aspects.
Globalization is the word used to describe the growing interdependence of the world’s
economies, cultures and populations, brought about by cross border trading goods and services,
technology and flows of investment, people and information.
In globalization, we look at its core values, its aims, aspects, and its impact on circulium and
how is it going to influence the curriculum.
Globalization particularly intends to improve and develop the skills of the people who receive it.
Globalization helps in producing learners who are peace building students, conflict preventers
and resolutions makers, peace education for non violence, tolerance, acceptance, mutual respect,
intercultural and interfaith dialogue and reconciliation.
2. Social justice and human rights
Social justice means treating others with equality. Human rights carters for the differences in
individuals for example people with special needs.
It helps the curriculum designers to design the curriculum that will produce learners that manifest
human rights in the everyday’s lives of people at every level of the society.
This helps curriculum designers to design the enable learners that can abstract the concept of
covering the philosophical issues such as fairness and social justice
4. Cultural integrity
Culture refers to the sum total of an individual’s experience, knowledge, skills, beliefs, values,
sense of who they are and where they fit in their family, and society.
Curriculum integrity helps the curriculum designers to design a curriculum that help to produce
learners that can reflect on their own culture identity and predispositions.
5. Ecological balance
this refers to a state of dynamic equilibrium within a community of organisms in which genetic
species and eco system diversity remain relatively stable, subject to gradual changes through
natural successation
6. Democratic participation
This helps curriculum learners to design a curriculum hat emphasizes learners in the board
participation of constituency in the direction and operation of political systems.
Types of globalization
Political globalization
This refers to the diplomatic negotiations between national-states. It includes the standardization
of global rules around trade, the rule of law.
Social Globalization
It is also known sociological globalization. Social globalization refers to the integration of our
societies.
Economic Globalization.
Technological Globalization
This refers to the spread of technology around the world. For example solar panel technology
and medical technology.
Cultural Globalization
This refers to the spread and mixing of cultures around the world.
Ecological Globalization
This refers to the idea that the world needs to be considered one interconnected ecosystem.
Geographical Globalization
This refers to the idea that the world is no longer seen as the groups of distinct nations as much
as it once was.
Characteristics of globalization
1. Connectivity
2. Economic
There has been an increase in the exchange of service goods technology and capital as well as
culture among different countries. This has helped curriculum designers while designing the
curriculum trough adopting different technologies from different countries for example in the
Information technology there is need to adopt different technologies from different countries in
order to enable learners to fit in the global village that is to say use of internet in carrying out
research.
3. Cultural
The transmission of ideas, values and meanings throughout the world which is aimed to extend
and intensify the present relations. Globalization influences the curriculum in a way that it helps
the curriculum developers to design a curriculum that suits the vales and ideas of different
societies that produces learners who respect and add value to different societies in different
countries.
4. Political
It refers to the growth and prosperity of the political system worldwide in both complexities as
well as in size. This gives a chance to the curriculum designers to know the political system and
how it is impacting on the curriculum sometimes in form of investing in the work of the
curriculum and what is necessary to be in the curriculum which brings about the smooth running
of the educational system and the growth of the country.
5. Opportunity
With globalization the developed country can approach the developing country where they share
their knowledge experience and technological advancement, which will help the developing
country to grow. Due to the opportunity given to everyone to prosper, the curriculum developers
are given a chance to design a curriculum basing on what the developed country have included in
their curriculum that can enable developing countries like Uganda to grow.
6. Learning
Globalization helps in understanding something new that was not present in the country earlier
and that may be true for example the use of information technology(IT) in the education system
which enables curriculum designers to design a curriculum that produce learners to that have
different skills of IT like research.
Since curriculum is based on education, therefore we shall look on the impact of globalization on
education mostly higher education for example institutions, colleges and universities. The
following are some of the impacts.
There has been rapid growth of television services and influence of media and mass
communication has gained immense significance in the technological shift with the help of
computers and internet, libraries, text, images and other kinds of data can be accessed anytime
from anywhere in the world.
There has been development in the delivery of education and this is providing more scope for the
individuals to explore new ideas of thinking and learning which could not be done with just a
piece of paper and pen, and interconnected systems on ecological, cultural, economical, political
and technological grounds such globalization program which draws upon humanities in many
areas such as humanities; social science and environmental science. Globalization and
technological advancements have created an immense foundation that the subjects and the
courses would also gradually reflect the global outlook.
The spread of education internationally as a result of globalization has created an impact upon
cultures worldwide. Educational institutions have reacted accordingly; by becoming more market
oriented focusing their energy on creation of funds rather than providing more education for
students. The internationalization of education particularly for higher education is a growing
trend. Universities and colleges around the world are becoming increasingly forced to compete in
the global capitalist market and getting engaged in entrepreneurial activity in order to survive in
a tentative environment.
The internationalization of higher education can be connected to various internal and external
changes in the international system. In external environment, there has been a change in the labor
market which calls for more knowledge and skilled workers with the deeper understandings of
individuals for their cultures, businesses and languages. Modern education aims to prepare
individuals for their employability within urban areas. Higher education is a subject to global
trends, universities now facing more challenges than ever before, the rise of a globalised
knowledge based economy has brought universities in many countries under closer scrutiny for
the economic contributions they make. Governments have been particularly concerned that
universities serve national interests in the global market place. There is an international tendency
to emphasize the practical, technical value of higher education.
In conclusion, the current globalization of higher education has created both challenges and
opportunities; education proves to be an answer to problems of globalization. With an increasing
impact of globalization, the system of education has to be created in such a manner that it should
introduce the global methods and reforms in the subject areas, in other words, the universities
need to reflect upon the impact of globalization. They must get engaged with the issues of
globalization both theoretically as analysts and researchers and practically as academic workers
involved in an increasingly globalised enterprise. Another are which needs to be taken under
consideration within the system of education is that it should treat each unique culture and
society with due respect; realizing that global education is not just learning about the west but
also studying different cultures of the world, using different approaches, ways of teaching and
the media.
