Coil Tubing

Coiled tubing involves flexible pipes that were originally developed during WWII for oil transportation. The length of these pipes has increased over time from 30 feet to over 1000 feet. Coiled tubing units consist of equipment like a control cabin, reel, injector head, and blowout preventer. Coiled tubing offers benefits over traditional drilling like significantly faster completion times and the ability to work in narrower wells. The control cabin software monitors job parameters. The reel holds and deploys the coiled tubing, while the injector head straightens curved sections of pipe. The blowout preventer provides several barriers to cut off well pressure in emergency situations.

Coiled Tubing

It means flexible pipes.

 History of CT.
During the world war-2 this type of pipes was invented for oil transportation to
England. The first time length of pipes is around 30 feet.
In 1983 this technology was applied to oil industry. Then pipe’s length was
increase from 30 -250 feet to 1000-1700 feet. By the way 30 feet = 9 meter
There are a lot of type of pipes which different measure.
For instance, 1 inch and to the 8-10 inch. In our country we use only 2 inch pipes.
The length of the pipe getting increases everybody thinks of about welding proses
Because of, the biggest companies want the most reliable way of welding.
BP uses 45degree method. They don’t accept bat welding (90 degree)
Coiled tubing unit consists of control house, reel, tubing, injector, tubing guide,
stripper, power pack, well control equipment and crane.
 Why coiled tubing?
Because CT method has a lot of benefits. The most important is about time. Just
imagine that if a normal drilling proses going 1 day, we can do that work about 3-
4 hours. And you know time is money 
Wells are getting more narrower when we go more depth. Soo we cant use
normal equipment in there. So we use CT for to solve problem.
The most important function is circulation but we can use more than this
When we work with CT we don’t have pollution risk and pipes be cleaner than
other method.
 What is Control Cabin?
Conductor controls everything in the control cabin. I want to talk about job
master. This is a software app. Job master notes every single thing, parameters,
pressure, depth, weight, temperature etc. And by the way we uses 3 software
system( job master, circa, cylce. i wrote about JB. What is cylce. its mission is
count pipes. When pipes go throug well cycle counts after that when pipes
returns cycle count again).

 What is Reel?
Reel is a equipment which we sink the pipes around it. And reel places every time
in front of cabin. Why? Because conducter or any worker most see that. İf
something goes wrong a worker can see that imediately. Reel is always isolated.
İts reason too clear. İf pipes have any scratch or something like that this mean is a
big problem.
Large radius for best life. Level wind assembly to wrap tubing on and off reel
 What about Power Pack?
İn my opinion power pack is a heart of Coiled Tubing. Because this equipment is a
energy ( hydraulico) source. İf sth happend and power pack crashed it means all
the CT prosses is stopped.
 What is Injector Head?
This equipment has a big mission. İt make curved pipes straight. The construction
has 3 parts which effects pipes make straight. İnjector designation based on
maximum pull capability, e.g 30k can pull 30000 pounds.
Stripper is a primary barrier and it declare pressure
 What does BOP means?
Finally .This is my favorite part. İt means Blow out prevent. Just assume that
something happend like catastrophe. What can we do for cut off the connection
between well and surface. Yes, that is right, we use BOP. This equipment has 4
barriers which called: blinds, shears, slips, pipes.
Slips function is wrap the pipe and holds the weight of the well.
Shears function is cut the pipe
Pipes function is cover the space around well. So this proses directly effects
pressure.
And blinds function is absolutely disconnection. After all of these we do opposite
of this proses.
Assume that something happened and you can’t take the pipe out of the well. The
equipment stuck in the well. What can you do? In this situation we use ball-drop
for disconnection. A ball drops from injector head to the equipment and It
remove 1 part from another so a problem solved. After that we use fishing to
take another part.
The main function is 1) placement of chemicals 2) sand cleaning 3) fishing
4) logging 5) milling and drilling
