In this module, you will learn how to use divisibility rules for
3, 6 and 9 to find the common factors of numbers. It provides you
with explanations, examples and varied activities to build the
concept and skill.

II. Objective:
Use divisibility rules for 3, 6 and 9 to find the common factors of
numbers.

The following words are used in the module:

COMMON FACTOR- a factor that 2 or more numbers have in


common.

DIVISIBLE - means dividing a number without any remainder.

DIVISIBILITY RULES- are set of general rules that are often used
to determine whether or not a number is evenly divisible by
another number.

FACTOR - is any of the numbers used in multiplication to form a


product.

We use divisibility rules to find the factors of a number. Let’s take 30.
30 it is divisible by 2, by 3, by 6. Therefore 2, 3 and 6 are factors of
30. However, you can multiply each number with another number to
get other factors of 30. See example below;
2 × 15 = 30
3 × 10 = 30 therefore, 15, 10 and five are other factors of 30.
6 × 5 = 30
So the factors of 30 are:
30- 2, 3, 5,6,10 and 15

Let’s try 36.


It is divisible by 2,3,6 and 9. Therefore,
2,3,6,9 are factors of 36. Let’s find the other factors.
2 × 18 = 36
3 × 12 = 36
6 × 6 = 36 → so 18,12 and 4 are other factors of 36.
9 × 4 = 36

So the factors of 36 are;
36-2, 3,4,6,12,18
What are the common factors of 30 and 36?

30 – 2, 3,5,6,10,15

36- 2, 3,4,6,9,12,18

The common factors of 30 and 36 are 2, 3 and 6
