Chain of Survival
A strong Chain of Survival can improve chances of survival and recovery for victims of
cardiac arrest, stroke and other emergencies. The six links adult Chain of Survival are:
1. Early recognition & Prevention
2. Activation of Emergency Response
3. High Quality CPR
4. Defibrillation
5. Post Cardiac Arrest Care
6. Recovery

1. Turn on the AED
2. Follow the prompt
Medication Patches : remove the medication patch prior to attaching the AED pads.
Water and/or sweat : If the victim is covered in water or sweat attempt to dry the chest prior
to applying the AED pads. Moisture may divert the shock from the heart.
Pacemakers: If the victim has an implanted pacemaker or defibrillator continue to use an AED
as otherwise indicated for other patients. Simply avoid attaching the AED pads directly over
the pacemaker.

5 PARAMETERS OF HIGH
QUALITY CPR (INFANT)
• Push hard at a depth of 1 1/2 inches (4 cm)
• Push fast at a rate of 100 – 120 compressions/min
• Allow full chest recoil
• Minimize interruptions to less than 10 seconds
• Avoid excessive ventilation
