Mamanwa Tribes
The term Mamanwa means “First Forest Dwellers”, derived from “man” (first) and “banwa”
(forest).
The Mamanwa (variously called Conking, Mamaw, Amamanusa, Manmanua, Mamaua,
Mamanwa) are one of the three groups that occupy a very distinct position in Philippine
populations. Heretofore, the Mamanwa has been classified as a Negrito subgroup, but physical
anthropological data indicate otherwise.
The Mamanwa appear to be an older branch of population appearances in the Philippines
affecting to some extent the Negrito of northeastern Luzon. Like all the Negrito groups in the
country, the Mamanwa speak a language that is basically that of the dominant group about them.
Language
The Mamanwa language is a Central Philippine language spoken by the Mamanwa people. It is
spoken in the provinces of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte in the Lake Mainit area of
Mindanao, Philippines.It had about 5,000 speakers in 1990.
Mamanwa is a grammatically conservative language, retaining a three-way deictic distinction in
its articles which elsewhere is only preserved in some of the Batanic languages.

Mamanwa Tribes Locations


The Mamanwa can be found in Agusan del norte, Surigao del norte, Surigao del sur, Panaoan
Islands and in the mountains of southern Leyte.
Cultures and Traditions
The Mamanwa are nomadic in nature, relying on hunting and gathering to survive and grow
minimal crops such as yams to supplement their foraging activities. The Manobo's subsistence
pattern is, on the other hand, semi-nomadic relying mainly on shifting agriculture with hunting
and gathering as supplementary activities.
Culture
The Mamanwa reverence of the Panlabao and its surrounding forests is rooted in their belief that
it is the birthplace of their ancestors. It is the home of their spirits that provide the “baylan” their
spiritual and medicinal wisdom and healing abilities.

Rituals and Ceremonies
Superstitious Beliefs
 Mamanwa tribe believe in spirits and unseen beings residing and protecting the elements
of their environment and to whom recognition and rospect must be accorded otherwise
they will be punished or afflicted by adverse incidents.
 Another, when it is a farm area. releasing a white chicken will result to fertility of the
soil, it is believed that this will increase the harvest.
Rituals
 Birth Ritual- Mamanwa women during pregnancy would suppress their desire for food
affecting the health and growth of their babies which naturally need nutritious food,
especially while inside the womb of their mothers. During pregnancy on account of their
elders' prohibition to take nutritious food items which can increase the weight of their
unborn babies.
 Marriage Ritual- Mamanwa weddings are traditionally celebrated during summer months
March to May. The courtship begins when the boy is between 7 to 10 years old. Parents
visit the home of a prospective, bride of the same age as their son and the head of the
family informs the girl's family that their son seeks marriage.
 Death and Mourning Rituals- They transfer from a place to another especially in case of
deaths to leave, sadness, great sorrows, and forget grief painful memories. In Mamanwa,
the dead were either laid on a platform built beside a tree or wrapped in a mat or bamboo
slats and hung up on a tree.
 Healing Rituals Healing rituals- are performed by Baylan/Tambajon (Shaman) who has
two kinds namely; those who are specialist in using herbal medicine to treat illnesses, and
those who are skilled in conducting rituals and ceremonies
Ceremonies
 Bonok- Bonok Festival- is a ritual dance originated in Mamanwa tribe. This festival is
celebrated in Surigao. It is also celebrated in reverence to the Patron Saint San Nicolas de
Tolentino and to reflect the city's rich cultural heritage.
 Tahawan Ceremony- They are still practicing this ceremony which is an indigenous
manner of worship thanksgiving and cheery making
 Kahimunan Ceremony Grand festivity in the Mamanwa land, it is offered when
welcoming an important person in the town or province
Roles of Men and Women
Roles of Women- contributed fairly on the household income by selling their basketry or
products from rattan in the towns of Cortes and Tandag respectively. Others were active in the
farm planting vegetables and gathering honey. Majority of the household's chores are done by
women.
Roles of Men- are tasked to gather materials from the forest that are far from them which will be
used to make their products for economic purposes. Men from Mamanwa are skilled in doing
farming. They are also using bow and arrow in hunting.

Tahaw- The supreme god
Magbabaya- the supreme deity
Diyatot- The lowest in the rank of the deities. It believed to dwell in the balete tree.
Manguangan Tribe

The Manguangan of Philippines, numbering 9,100, are No Longer Unreached. They are part of
the Filipino, Tribal people cluster within the Malay Peoples affinity bloc. This people group is
only found in Philippines.
Their primary language is Dibabawon Manobo. The primary religion practiced by the
Manguangan is ethnoreligion. Ethnoreligion is deeply rooted in a people's ethnic identity and
conversion essentially equates to cultural assimilation.
Manguangan Tribe located
The Manguangan makes up the indigenous people living in the Cordillera Sugut mountains in
Mindanao. Estimated to reach 3,488 in numbers in 1987,they are scattered up to the great lakes
of Buayan or Maguindanao and in the territory between what is occupied by the Manobo and the
Mandaya in Davao and South Cotabato. Due to this close geographic proximity with the two
tribes, they usually are thought members of those although the Jesuits and others take them as a
distinct ethnic group.
