TOPIC: CONCEPT OF VALUE

Determine what is worth and pursing and compare this with pursuit of others.
From the list of values, what are the most valuables,

What are Values?

- Edwerd Spranger define the value as "the constellaon of standards, or qualities,

characteristics, or ideas that determine a person's view of the world Those
standards/idea, qualities are likes, dislikes, viewpoints, inner inclinational, rational and
irrational judgments, prejudices, and association patterns

- Values can be defined as those things that are valued by someone. In other words,

values are what is considered ‘important ‘by an individual or an organization. Examples
include courage, honesty, freedom, innovation etc .

Value = Degree of Importance of Something

Value denotes the degree of importance of something (or even an action).

Values help in determining what actions are best to do.

Values are ‘beliefs’ about ‘what is important’

Values are the beliefs of an individual or a social group about what is held important.
That motivate people to act one way or another. “Equal rights for all”, “Merit above all
else”, “Dignity of labour” etc. are representatives of values.

Values vs ethics

Values determine what is important.

Ethics determine what is right.
Values are ideals of someone (or a group) about what is good or bad (or desirable or
undesirable).
Ethics is all about reasoning how to do the right action
Formation of Values *

We start forming values in our childhood.

First, we learn to appreciate things that fulfill our basic needs, but we value especially those
people that provide them to us
. * Their behavior towards us becomes the main reference of what is valuable
. * The consistency and coherence of our parents' behavior is what strengthens our formation.
• Values are often confused with habits, and many parents hope that school will form the values
that were not instilled at home. This is not possible, because school does not fulfill the basic
needs of life... that is the responsibility of those who raise us.

Types of values

Values can be classified as:

Spiritual values- in the creation of meaning included building a source of energy,

development and hope linked to mutual giving and taking, helping and being helped.

 Honesty.
 Trust.
 Kindness.
 Generosity.
 Tolerance.
 Patience.
 Perseverance.
 Discernment.

Moral Values- are the key components of a person's character. They are personality traits
guiding people to make decisions and judgements according to their own sense of what
is right and wrong, based on collective and individual experiences.

Social Values
Intellectual Values
Economic Values
Political Values etc

Moral values are rated highest among all natural values.

Things we should Pursue (Worth Pursuing):
● Happiness
● Your dreams
● Opportunities
● Love
● Friendship
● Courage
● fairness

Human pursuit is divided in four parts, artha, kama, dharma, moksha. Artha is the seeking of
survival which relates to physical and material well-being. Kama is seeking more of what gives
pleasure and avoiding what gives pain. Dharma are moral and ethical values by which a good
human being lives life.

● Each of us have different pursuits in life, but most of us pursue what really makes us
happy and things that bring us comfort, peace and love.
