Important
This white paper contains the information necessary to upgrade any of the HPE MSA 1040/2040/2042 storage systems to the HPE MSA
2050/2052 storage systems or convert protocols on the HPE MSA 2050/2052 storage systems. Most of the steps are the same regardless
which storage system you are upgrading from. If an instruction applies to only one or two of the original host protocols, you’ll see [fc], [i], or [sa]
at the beginning of the instruction.

Terminology
Array enclosure: This is the array head or chassis of the HPE MSA that includes the controllers.
Storage system: This whole MSA system includes the array enclosure and disk enclosure(s).
Note
The HPE MSA 2050/2052 storage systems support eight total enclosures, including the array enclosure, for a maximum of 192 SFF drives
(199 SFF drives if using the existing HPE D2700 Disk Enclosures) or 96 LFF drives. Mixed LFF and SFF enclosures are supported; see the
following table for the maximum LFF and SFF drive configurations for each array enclosure. Note that mixing LFF and SFF disk enclosures will
give you values in between those shown.
1 A license is required for the Performance Tier in mixed SSD and HDD systems. For a system with only SSDs, the Performance Tier license is not required.
Technical white paper Page 4
• Support for replication snapshot history and queueing for Remote Snap
• Remote Snap for both FC and iSCSI
• Volume copy across pools
All HPE MSA 2052 models come standard with the HPE ADS Software Suite LTU. Software titles included in the software suite include:
• HPE MSA 2050 Performance Automated Tiering E-LTU
• HPE MSA 512-Snapshot Software LTU
• HPE MSA Remote Snap Software LTU
Note
The HPE ADS Software Suite license key comes standard with the HPE MSA 2052 and is installed to enable the services.

Consult the HPE MSA 2052 QuickSpecs for the latest supported drive capacities.
Another example might be changing an HPE MSA 2050 SAN FC mode to an HPE MSA 2050 SAN combo mode (FC/iSCSI). This example would
require the addition of iSCSI SFPs.
Table 4 lists the supported SFP locations on the HPE MSA 2050/2052 controller ports when using FC, iSCSI, and the combination of FC and
iSCSI.
Table 4. Supported HPE MSA 2050/2052 SAN controller host ports and SFP locations—Symmetrical SFP placement is required

Note
You must set the host port mode using the CLI command set host-port-mode. See the CLI Online Help or the HPE MSA 2050 CLI Reference
Guide for more information on the command.
3 LUN mappings using a protocol that is different from the original controller (that is, changing from iSCSI to FC) will be deleted during the upgrade and needs to be remapped;
HPE MSA 2050/2052 comes standard with an array enclosure. Drives must be moved to the HPE MSA 2050/2052 storage system during the upgrade process and placed in the
same array enclosure in the same order, for consistency, as they were in the HPE MSA 1040/2040/2042 array enclosure. The same drive order is not compulsory, as the metadata
will be identified by the HPE MSA 2050/2052 controllers. Moving drives should only be done while the system is offline.
4 HPE MSA 2050/2052 SAN controller will support up to four host connections with options of 16 Gb, 8 Gb FC, 10 Gb, and 1 Gb iSCSI per controller. See Table 4 for valid
configurations.
5 SFP in Host Port 1 must match SFP in Host Port 2
6 SFP in Host Port 3 must match SFP in Host Port 4

Upgrade considerations
The following is a list of upgrade considerations that need to be noted during the upgrade:
Important
• The HPE MSA 2050/2052 storage system only supports virtual disk groups.
• During the upgrade, the storage system will be powered down and all HPE MSA 1040/2040/2042 array enclosures will be replaced with
HPE MSA 2050/2052 array enclosures.
• Existing drives will be removed from the HPE MSA 1040/2040/2042 array enclosure and placed in the new HPE MSA 2050/2052 array
enclosure in the same order, for consistency. The same drive order is not compulsory, as the HPE MSA 2050/2052 controllers will identify the
metadata. Moving drives should only be done while the system is offline. If there was an existing Performance Tier, Remote Snap replication, or
512 Snapshot license on the HPE MSA 1040/2040 storage system, new licenses will need to be obtained and applied to the upgraded
system.
The new licenses can be obtained from the My License Portal myenterpriselicense.hpe.com/.
• If multipath is used, multipath settings for the new HPE MSA 2050/2052 will need to be added before the upgrade to ensure consistent
access to the array after the upgrade. Failure to update the multipath settings properly could result in additional data unavailability or data
loss.
• Host mapping may need to be recreated after upgrade. Record array mapping in case this information is required.
• Allow a minimum of two hours to complete the upgrade process. Allow additional time for configurations that contain large host counts
because volume-to-host mappings may need to be reconfigured.
• If your current environment is Boot from SAN, verify Boot from SAN settings after the upgrade using the Boot from SAN document as a guide.
From the following link, locate the section from the HPE Boot from SAN Configuration Guide and review the Configuring HBAs section
h20566.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c05173045.
• IP addresses will not be retained during the upgrade. See the HPE MSA 2050 CLI Reference Guide for setting the initial IP addresses of the
new controller management ports.
• HPE Storage Management Utility (SMU) for the HPE MSA 2050/2052 supports Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Safari.
• If you are changing storage protocols with the upgrade, you will need to validate that you have the appropriate host bus adapters (HBAs) to
support the new storage protocol.
• If changing protocols during the upgrade, new cables (FC, direct access cables [DAC], or Ethernet) will be needed to utilize the new protocol of
the controller. Qualified cables can be found in the HPE MSA 2050/2052 QuickSpecs and are available for purchase.
• The HPE MSA 2050/2052 SAN controllers do not include SFP transceivers. Qualified SFPs for the HPE MSA 2050/2052 can be found in the
HPE MSA 2050/MSA 2052 QuickSpecs and are available for purchase in four packs.
• The HPE MSA 2050/2052 SAN controllers have four ports for all protocols, so more cables (FC, DAC, or Ethernet) might be needed to utilize
the additional ports on the controller.
Technical white paper Page 7
Note
Only HPE MSA 2050/2052 SFPs and qualified DACs will be recognized. Only they are usable within the HPE MSA 2050/2052 controllers. SFPs
from other sources such as HPE P2000 G3 MSA, HPE switches, and HPE FC HBAs will not be recognized, as well as not function within the
HPE MSA 2050/2052 controllers. Qualified SFPs and 10G DAC cables are listed in the QuickSpecs.
Note
Appendix A contains a checklist of the necessary data that will help you gather and save the configuration information for the upgrade.
Note
Validate that all required hardware for the upgraded storage system is available before starting. This includes but is not limited to—FC or iSCSI
SFPs, iSCSI DACs, and optical cables.
Not all items listed are required for every upgrade.
Note
The upgrade uses HPE SMU v3 of the web GUI exclusively to obtain configuration information from HPE MSA 1040/2040/2042. HPE SMU v3
can be accessed by adding “/v3” to the IP address of the HPE MSA array: https://<MSA array IP>/v3

6. [fc] Record the Worldwide Names (WWNs) of the existing storage system controller’s FC ports.
This can be found from the HPE SMU under System > Rear tab and then hover the mouse pointer over the FC ports (see, Figure 1). The
WWN of the ports is listed as “ID” in the HPE SMU.
7. [fc] Record FC WWN IDs, Host Names, Nicknames, and profile settings of the FC HBAs you will be using to connect to the storage system, if
any. The WWN IDs are listed under the ID property in the HPE SMU. This can be found from the HPE SMU and choose Hosts (see Figure 2).
8. [fc] Record FC link speeds and topology settings. This can be found from the HPE SMU by choosing System > Action > Set Up Host Ports.
(see Figure 3).
9. [i] Record the IP addresses of the controller iSCSI ports. This can be found from the HPE SMU by selecting System > Rear tab and then
hovering the mouse pointer over the iSCSI ports.
10. [i] Record any port IQN Host IDs, Host Names, and Nicknames that were given. This can be found from the HPE SMU by selecting Hosts.
11. [i] Record iSNS information. This can be found from the HPE SMU by selecting System > Action > Set Up Host Ports. Then select the
Advanced Settings tab.
12. [i] Record existing CHAP information.
This information can be located from the HPE SMU by selecting System > Action > Set Up Host Ports. Then select the Advanced Settings
tab.
Note
IQN names will no longer be applicable if you are upgrading to the FC protocol. The IQN Host IDs and Names will be applicable if you choose to
upgrade to the iSCSI protocol controller and choose to use the iSCSI targets of the new controller. Similarly, recording FC WWNs, nicknames, and
speeds are only valid if you are moving to an HPE MSA 2050/2052 SAN (FC or mixed FC/iSCSI).
13. Record existing volume mapping information (see Figure 4). This can be found from the HPE SMU by selecting Mapping.
You might want to take a screenshot of the explicit mappings if you have a substantial amount of mappings. You can also use the CLI
command show volume-maps to record mappings.
If you are changing host interfaces (for example, from iSCSI to FC), any host-specific mapping will no longer be valid. If you have host-specific
mappings and are changing host interfaces, you need to record them. Later, during the upgrade process, you will remap the hosts.
Technical white paper Page 10
14. Record all system usernames, passwords, and the user roles for users who can log on to the storage system. This can be found, except for the
passwords, from the HPE SMU under Home > Action > Manage Users.
Note
Do not delete usernames; simply record existing username and user information. Passwords will show up as asterisks on the screen.
22. Record the snapshot and replication scheduling information. This can be found from the HPE SMU under Volumes > Action > Manage
Schedules and Replications > Actions > Manage Schedules.
Note
Do not modify the schedule; simply record the existing schedule information.
23. If applicable, record Peer Connections used for Remote Snap. This can be found in the HPE SMU under Replications > Peer Connections.
Note
For example, get logs 20170124_ftp_Storage2_A.zip
Record the filename and path for future reference.
To ensure that the multipath software will be able to use the new controller after it is installed, update the multipath software to identify the new
controller correctly. This may require a reboot of the operating system.
Finishing up
1. Shut down all hosts connected to the array.
2. Label existing host connect cables if they are to be used in the upgraded system.
3. Label all management network cables with the controller ID before disconnecting from the existing controllers.
Technical white paper Page 12
4. Click OK.
Note
An HPE SMU warning message might appear. This is an informational message that requires no action.
Note
Verify that the Cache Status LED on the back of the controller is not blinking after the OK to Remove is illuminated. A blinking cache status LED
means that cache has not been flushed to disk. If the cache light is blinking, then call HPE support. See Figures 6, 7, 8, or 9 for your controller.
Technical white paper Page 13
8. Completely power down the HPE MSA array by removing the power cords on the back of the array enclosure.
9. If you have drive enclosure(s) that are connected to the MSA array enclosure, power them down by pressing the switches at the back of each
drive enclosure to the Off (O) position.
Note
If power supplies do not have power switches, remove the power cord.
5. Remove the existing HPE MSA 1040/2040/2042 array enclosure from the rack. Follow the steps found on the HPE Product Recycling page
for proper disposal of the storage enclosure including the controllers: hpe.com/us/en/about/environment/product-recycling.html.
6. Install and rack the new HPE MSA 2050/2052 array enclosure.
7. For consistency, re-insert the HPE MSA drives into the same slots of the upgraded MSA array enclosure. The same drive order is not
compulsory as the metadata will be identified by the HPE MSA 2050/2052 controllers.
8. Insert SFPs into the HPE MSA 2050/2052 SAN controllers. If you are planning to use DAC cables for iSCSI then SFPs are not required.
9. Reconnect or install new host connect cables. You must already have the correct SFPs for HPE MSA 2050/2052 and DACs available for
installation.
