Name Forms of Energy

What is Energy?
Energy is most simply understood as the ability to do work. All living things
use energy to maintain life, grow, change, and move. We use energy to
prepare meals, to travel in a car, and to brush our teeth.

There are many different kinds of energy. Chemical energy is found in the
interaction of atoms and molecules. This is the kind of energy that our
body makes from the food that we eat. Electrical energy is caused by the
movement of electrons. Gravitational energy is found between extremely
large objects like planets and the sun. Heat energy, also called thermal
energy, occurs when molecules at different temperatures interact.
Radiant energy comes from light, in particular the light of the sun. You are
probably already familiar with radiant energy as solar energy! Kinetic
energy is the energy of anything that is moving. Kinetic means relating to
or resulting in motion. Nuclear energy is generated from splitting atoms.
Finally, when energy is stored, it is called potential energy. Something that
is sitting on a high shelf has potential energy; when it falls, it will have
kinetic energy.

In physics, there is a single standard unit for measuring

energy called the joule (J). Around the world, there are
also different units for measuring energy, like kilowatt-
hours, calories, and foot-pounds.

One of the basic laws of science is called the Law of Conservation of

Energy. It says that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be
changed from one form into another or transferred from one object to
another. For example, solar panels on a home turn radiant energy into
electrical energy that can be used to power home appliances.

Energy can also be either renewable or non-renewable. Renewable

energy comes from a source that never runs out, like the sun or the wind.
Non-renewable energy comes from a source that will run out one day, like
the coal we burn to create electricity.
