Introduction
This document describes how to use Field Upgrade Utility to deploy and upgrade displays to
support the latest version of PowerVision. This process can be used to rescue a display or to
update a display where the original configuration is not easily available.

Important Considerations of using this Utility

This utility should be used to update displays that cannot be updated with the PowerVision
update process. Typically this applies only to displays that have lost the ability to access the
Boot Loader. Please be aware that you should still have a full install ready to update the
display due to the fact that in some scenarios, the configuration can NOT be backed up.

What do I need to run this Utility?

This utility provides two methods of connecting to the display depending on its current state. In
order to use the utility you will need the following items.

• PC running Windows XP or Windows 7 with a free USB port. In general, if the computer
will run PowerVision it can be used to run this utility.

• PowerVision Connection Kit – For the Simple and Fallback methods of updating a
display, the utility uses the PowerVision Connection Kit. This is the same kit you use for
connecting to a display with PowerVision. This kit should be configured using the same
setup and addresses used for PowerVision.

If you do not have this kit it is available from Murphy as part number:
• 78-09-0048 (KIT,DEVELOPER,PV450)
• 78-09-0098 (KIT,DEVELOPER,PV780)

• Emergency Connection Kit – This cable is necessary in some uncommon scenarios

where the display cannot be accessed using any other method.

This kit uses a custom USB Cable and is available from Murphy as part number:
78-00-1094 (CABLE,USB MALE A TO MALE A, 6ft)

Installing the Field Upgrade Utility
The Field Upgrade can be installed and run on any computer that has PowerVision installed
and working. Please refer to the instructions for setting up a computer to use the PowerVision
Programming Kit for information on configuring a computer for use with this utility.

Step Action

1 Download the latest version of the Field Upgrade Utility

The upgrade utility is available on the forum at

http://forum.fwmurphy.com/viewforum.php?f=3.

Download the install package and save it to a known location on your PC.

2 Run the Setup program to install the application and drivers.

Run the setup program by right-clicking on the icon and selecting “Run as
Administrator”. Follow the instructions to install the upgrade on your computer.
During the upgrade you will be prompted to install drivers which are not signed.
Please accept these drivers as they are necessary for some of the rescue scenarios.

3 Install Complete

If the install completed successfully with no errors, you should see an icon on your
desktop labeled “Field Upgrade Utility”.

Using the Field Upgrade Utility Simple and Fallback Methods
The Field Upgrade utility has the ability to update the display using three different methods.
The methods are described below.

Simple and Fallback Update Methods: Backup and Restore a Running Display
Simple update allows you to update a display that’s running normally. This method has the
advantage of being able to back up the current configuration and replace it with minimal
interaction from the user. This method will work for most displays. In some cases the
display is too busy to connect and this method will fail.

Fallback update allows you to update a display that’s currently displaying its bootloader. It
is otherwise identical to the Simple Update and will back up the configuration and restore it
upon completion.

NOTE: This method will prompt you to save a backup (a full install file)
should it be needed to restore the display. Please keep this back up in
case you need to completely erase the display.

The following instructions explain the steps in the Simple and Fallback Update:

Step Action
NOTE The PC should be configured to use the PowerVision Connection kit prior to the
following step.
1 Connect the Cables to the Display

To complete this step you will need to access the USB connection on the display. If
you do not have a USB Connection on your display, contact Murphy Support to
acquire a wiring harness which includes this connection. The power should be off
during this step.

2 Power Up the Display

During this step, you will be asked to power on the display. Depending on if you
are using Simple or Fallback, the instructions may also ask you to hold down a key
while turning on the display.

When the PC shows “Display Connected” you can proceed to the next step. This
may take a short while. If you do not see “Display Connected” after a minute or so,
please check your cables and reboot the display again.

Step Action
3 Identify the Display

During this step, the utility will attempt to identify the Display Part Number
information.
• In some cases, the display will be able to provide a configuration for you. If
so, you can select your configuration and click “Continue Walkthrough.

• In MOST cases, the display will prompt you to back up the display. Select
Yes and the utility will proceed with the backup. This backup will take a few
minutes to complete. When complete, the “Continue “Walkthrough” button
will be available and you can continue with the update process.

4 When the backup completes you will be prompted for a location to save the backup.
Keep this file. It is a PowerVision Full Install file that includes your configuration.
The file will be useful in the case were the display cannot be upgraded and must be
replaced.

Step Action
5 Upgrade the Display

During this step the utility will complete the upgrade process. This process is
completely automatic and it is normal for the display to go through multiple steps.
You should not disturb the PC or Display during this time. The following steps will
happen automatically but are described here for your familiarization:

The display will boot to a screen similar to the one below which says “Loading”:

The display will begin to blink. This indicates that the upgrade is being applied.
During this time, a lot of power or connection will likely leave the display inoperable.

The system will eventually load a screen as seen below. This indicates that the
upgrade completed and a new bootloader is in place.

The display will stay at this screen while the backup is restored to the display,
which may take several minutes. It will reboot to the original configuration.

Step Action
NOTE Machine Hours and saved variables will not be restored but the original
programming, version and configuration should look identical to what was on the
display when the update began.
6 Upgrade Complete

While the display reboots the last time, you can proceed to the final step. At this
point the upgrade is completed.
NOTE If the display does not complete the upgrade, you may be able to run the update
again. However, if the display appears inoperable, you can use the Emergency
Update to restore it to working operation. After this you will need to re-apply a Full
Install to put the display back into service.

Using the Field Upgrade Utility Emergency Update

Emergency Update is a tool which will rescue a completely non-functional display. It is only
for use with displays that you have no other method of updating. Please note that while the
Emergency update will likely be able to rescue the display, it does NOT save the
configuration so it will be necessary to reinstall a Full Install at the end of these instructions.
Also note that our experience is that this is a VERY rare scenario.

Step Action
1 Connect the cables to the display by using the USB Male to USB Male cable rather
than the PowerVision connection kit.

Step Action
2 Hold the bottom left key on the display WHILE you power on the display.

3 If the utility is able to connect to the display, it will send a very small restore
package which will allow you to boot the display into a working state.
4 When complete, you will be prompted to shut down the display. If you power it up
you will be instructed on the display to run the Simple Update.
5 Complete the instructions for the Simple Update.
NOTE The backup will not complete and instead, you will be prompted to install a
“Bootloader Only” install. When the update is complete you will need to restore the
configuration by installing a “Full Install” from PowerVision.
